Gol_Stoan Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 The most common release date I have found is November first: on Wal-Mart, eb games and Amazon.com. Of course this is probably just a place holder for now until they know the real release date, Gamestop and Gamespot are still TBA. IGN is so far the only site I have found so far with September first as the release date. On the other hand, evidently those who are using steam can already download the game, so maybe the release is closer than you think. Personally I hate Steam, being a dial-up user and all.
Scrivener Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 There was an article somewhere about a month (maybe two) ago - where the devs were saying that at the rate they were quashing bugs in QA they estimated about two weeks until gold. It's true that HL2 has started pre-load on Steam - but it's not the entire game. The preload merely downloads chunks of unuseable assets (such as the disk space hungry art assets) to regulate the release. In any case, I have an inkling that Valve at the very least has one or more completely viable release candidates. However it is quite possible that publisher Sierra is going to simply sit on it until November to maximize their holiday sales (an insane but standard buisness practice as it makes their numbers look more impressive to investors and shareholders). If that's the case, then Valve might just be adding content until Sierra is ready to ship.

We've waited this long what's a few more months. Besides, I already own the game anyway I'm just waiting to redeem my ATI voucher.

After years of missed launch dates and release mishaps, the Half-Life 2 saga is entering its final chapter. Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of public relations, confirmed to GameSpot today that the release candidate for the game has been sent to its publisher, VU Games, for approval. "Yes, the release candidate went to VUG yesterday," he said.

Court filings show VU Games has the right to sit on finished Half-Life 2 code for up to six months. Could it be deja vu all over again?. You know SC I think you would be better off to go the electronic route in distributing your games as you made mention of in another post. Again, it's the gamer that's getting the short end of the stick. Maybe it's time for Gamers to start a Union and get after these publishers and their games . Hmm, A Freelance Gamers Union. Sounds intriguing.

Anyway VU needs to be careful cause S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is on the horizon Q1 2005 and that's one game that can more than easily give Half-Life 2 a run for it's money.

The official story: Both VU Games and Valve declined comment. What we heard: Ever since the release candidate for Half-Life 2 was submitted to VU Games in mid-September, a pi├▒ata has hung in the lobby of Valve's headquarters. The plan: to bust the sucker open when the game achieved gold status. Earlier today, GameSpot learned from an informed sourced that "the pi├▒ata has been broken" and the game has gone gold. Further evidence of the game's completion was a press release issued this afternoon touting the first review of "the entire game."
