R_wilco Posted September 21, 2001 Report Posted September 21, 2001 I read in an earlier thread that, given the way BCM works, anyone familiar and learned in using GBSII should have a relatively easy time creating modifications and total conversions(mods and TCs) for BCM, since GBSII provides all the tools you need. Here are some mods I can see, if anyone takes the time to create them:Star Wars TC: It was inevitable . Assuming that the art and graphics(which you could extract from X-Wing Alliance or XvT) were good, this would make a great TC, a cross between XWA, Force Commander, and Jedi Knight. Star Trek TC: Another inevitable mod. This would be a cross between that ST strategy game whose name escapes my mind, and Voyager: Elite force. BCM seems almost perfect for it, given the sheer scale .Wing Commander TC: Origin has given up on the Wing Commander concept, and so has it's creator, so I can see a great WC mod for BCM. Not JUST piloting fighters, but also capital ship combat AND ground combat. But, you already knew that .Battletech/MechWarrior TC: Since Battletech is a whole UNIVERSE, it seems likely that a BattleTech mod would be great for BCM, assuming you could get the movement animations for the 'mechs right.RoboTech/Macross TC: RoboTech is an anime series which involves space combat, with ships that transform into 'mechs(I'm using the term loosely, I know there's an official term). I would imagine it being VERY cool, only slightly harder than the MechWarrior TC, since in RoboTech, the star fighters transform into 'mechs, and the handling for aircraft/ground based craft might not even be possible with BCM's engine. Still, I'd love to fly a VF-1 Super Valkyrie against a Gammulan base .Well, that's all I can think of for now, but if you have any ideas post them here
Fendi Posted September 21, 2001 Report Posted September 21, 2001 I'm all for the modding business. Since you did mention Robotech I'm quite surprised you didn't mentioned Transformers!! Imagine modelling a planet into Unicron (Sp?) and we would be able to recreate the birth of Rodimus Prime. Back to reality: That would be waaaaaay to difficult to make so lets stick to just Star Trek and Star Wars mods for now. Besides at the moment I'd rather play with the original models for the next few months. After that....
Rico Jansen Posted September 21, 2001 Report Posted September 21, 2001 A transformer mod is quite surely impossible. Does BCM have a way to initiate a transform (both directions)? Nope. Sure you can make a model of a Transformer character and swap it with your craft. But that's a onetime change of model. As is DeD. (dynamic entity deconstruction)
Guest DustBuster Posted September 21, 2001 Report Posted September 21, 2001 Now that we have first person, what about a Counter-Strike mod?
Supreme Cmdr Posted September 21, 2001 Report Posted September 21, 2001 A counter-strike type mod is fairly trivial to do, actually. The majority of the work would be in creating the weapon models.
rhett Posted September 22, 2001 Report Posted September 22, 2001 I have in the planning stages right now, a Babylon 5 TC. You can visit the site at: http://mods.firstones.com/B5BCM Please post any comments or questions you have. Also, suggestions would be appreciated.
Epsilon 5 Posted September 22, 2001 Report Posted September 22, 2001 Some questions : (My MODFAQ)1 - Can you change the ships that are auto-generated? YES. If you know how2 - Can you create new castes and eliminate some others?NO3 - Create more races, and remove some others? NO4 - Can you change the interface? (hud)NO5 - Can you change the name of the stuff you can buy, or even add stuff?NO6 - Can you change the missile properties, or swap some?YES. If you know how7 - Can you create custom weapons for capital ships and fighters?NOSome might be stupid, but I'd like all of them to be answered. Most are stupid. But when in doubt, read Gallion's response over and over and over and over[ 09-22-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Gallion Posted September 22, 2001 Report Posted September 22, 2001 The premise behind GBS (all flavors) is to allow us - the players - to create our own campaigns and missions. NOT to change a perfectly good game universe.TTFN[ 09-22-2001: Message edited by: Gallion ]
Guest $iLk Posted September 22, 2001 Report Posted September 22, 2001 I wonder if you could steal/borrow models from other games, scale them, and retexture - convert to 3DS - convert to bcm's 3d format, and use them...ProbablyYES. As long as (a) they're not stolen ( if you know how[ 09-22-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
rhett Posted September 23, 2001 Report Posted September 23, 2001 More dumb newbie questions. My apologies.1. Will you be able to tweak the AI? No2. Can you replace ships from the game with new models? Only if you know how3. Create planets (almost positive you can, but just wanted to ask)? NO!4. Modify small portions of the way races act? (My guess is No) No5. I have read somewhere (dont remeber where) that Newtonian physics were in the game, just not implemented because of AI problems. What is the command line to make Newtonian Physics work and is it possible to fix the AI bugs that cause Newtonian Physics not to work? (my guess is no you cant fix the bugs, because SC would have if he could have). No Newtonian PhysicsTTFN Thanks and my apologies again for the dumb questions.[ 09-23-2001: Message edited by: Gallion ]
Gallion Posted September 23, 2001 Report Posted September 23, 2001 Play the game before moding it. Use GBS-II to make your own killer mission/campaign scripts.TTFN[ 09-23-2001: Message edited by: Gallion ]
Guest $iLk Posted September 24, 2001 Report Posted September 24, 2001 Wow, good responses in this thread...Anyway just a few more questions and comments...I'm assuming that a majority of the questions that were answered NO to is because that even though it may be possible to change references, appearance, etc. about the objects, they are in the end embedded into the executable and cannot be overwritten without the source code.Okay, um as far as planets go, when you created the planets with the different land masses, ocean depths, etc. was this automatically done after putting the properties on a 2d plane such as the map and it auto did the 3d generation? As far as someone mentioning a transformer mod - if you were to use the object destruction tag in GBS and use it instead of destroying the object - give properties to only change the appearance of the object, would that be possible? If not only that but to use it to make crafts with moveable parts like opening and closing wings like in an X wing...? If so then how could we get it to happen without having it "destroyed"?I'm assuming that I can change the graphics front end of any object in the game without any detrimental effects assuming I don't cover up any click points. So if I wanted to change the icons, or add in a bridge like in bc3k could I? I know I can change appearance I'm just wanting to know if it has detrimental effects if you change too much.Um, last question - avi graphics, weapon effects, etc. Can they be changed as long as they are the same size, etc.Okay I read Gallion's posts and understand that I don't want to necessarily mod the game off the bat, but if we wanted to do a mission with the experimental craft from the new game you are making we could put it in and do a mission around it. <--- not a question so don't beat me Thank you and sorry if the answers are obvious and I'm just reading too much into it. You really took a lot of time doing a UNIVERSE for crying out loud... it blows my mind...
Fendi Posted September 24, 2001 Report Posted September 24, 2001 $ilk I was just joking about the Transformers mod. It's just a blast from my past thats all. Personally I'd rather have a 'virgin' game (nothing to do with Richard Branson) as the minute we mod the game we'll have issues with multiplayer (Uber Ships come to mind). The question that we really need to know is, will the mods effect the multiplayer bit? The last thing I need is a Borg Cube chasing me.
Gallion Posted September 24, 2001 Report Posted September 24, 2001 BCM is unlike any game (aside from BC3K that is) that has ever been developed before. Like any piece of software, it can be moded if the moder knows WTF they are doing. Dont look at GBS as one would look at a level editor for other games, it does not and will not allow drastic changes to the BC Series universe. Last time I am saying this - GBS is for mission and campaign script development with in the established BC universe. Nothing more, nothing less. You want to make something in a Star Trek Universe - get a decent or develope your own game based on the Star Trek Universe.TTFN[ 09-24-2001: Message edited by: Gallion ]
rhett Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 I think replying to the above post as it relates to B5 wouldnt be worth it. You have no idea how mush time, trouble, and effort has been put into trying to develop a B5 game. It is very unlike Star Trek.
Gallion Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 I am aware (as are many members of the community) of the amount of effort, etc. that went into developing a B5 game. Yes it was a shame that the B5 game was canned Capitalism can be a cruel beast at times Play BCM, learn GBS-II, and make ye own mission/campaign scripts. It is not hard and is somewhat idiot proof - to a certain degree.TTFN
Põdi Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 Will there eventually be a link to user-created scenarios and campaigns?
Guest $iLk Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 i'm sure that Gallion will place a few links... but I don't think it'll be that hard as people will link all sorts of stuff to here.
Gallion Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 quote:Will there eventually be a link to user-created scenarios and campaigns? You bet quote:i'm sure that Gallion will place a few links... but I don't think it'll be that hard as people will link all sorts of stuff to here.Correct. Most likely there will be GBS topic thread just for mission/campaign script links.TTFN
ShoHashi Posted September 25, 2001 Report Posted September 25, 2001 One thing that I've noticed about Gallion's missions/scripts is that once he finishes it he's never happy. He'll keep tinkering with it and refine it more. [ 09-25-2001: Message edited by: ShoHashi ]
Guest $iLk Posted September 27, 2001 Report Posted September 27, 2001 True : never know if you are downloading his latest or not hehe...
Gallion Posted September 27, 2001 Report Posted September 27, 2001 hehehehe ... just wait until BCM starts shipping I got one I'm a really wanting to finish TTFN
buckthesystem Posted November 21, 2001 Report Posted November 21, 2001 Hey guys, where can I find some user created scenarios (and bcstudio), I haven't seen any links yet, (although my glasses probably need a cleaning! )thnx-RVS-[ 11-21-2001: Message edited by: buckthesystem ]
Supreme Cmdr Posted November 21, 2001 Report Posted November 21, 2001 There aren't any yet because I have not released the GBS-II tools. I don't plan to until things have settled down.
buckthesystem Posted November 21, 2001 Report Posted November 21, 2001 oh yeah of course! although there must be something for bc3000ad surely?thnx again-RVS-[ 11-21-2001: Message edited by: buckthesystem ]
