Close Calls

As for me,

Just this morning, i was in Capella shooting some Mandarian scumbags, until i had 6 intruders onboard pop out of no where. 1 came in through the hanger doors of the FC bays and the other 5 managed to break into the bridge using some plasma cutters from the outside of the hull. So yeah, i was forced to evacuate the bridge while in a huge dogfight near the Pravis/Capella jumpgate. My two Violin escorts had managed to launch their fighters against a few enemy Cruisers/Carriers and many Mandorian Fighters. So while that was going on, half of my command staff , including me, got shot in the bridge and were badly wounded. I was forced to put everyone in two shuttles. Unluckily, 4 intruders followed us into the shuttle bays. I already had a few marines waiting for them and for us, fortunately, when we got there. But the intruders were persistant as hell, and managed to almost take out a couple of marines and injure another 6, so i was forced to try to micro-manage my officers to avoid the intruders.

In the meantime, my new Linear IV shield was being tested out in the field by 8 enemy fighters, countless missiles, and an enemy PTA system. I changed my auto-pilot manuevering when i saw my shields were being heavily bombarded at 30%. That helped ease the pressure alot. For the situation inside, things got better. 4 intruders were taken out, and some of the officers including myself returned to the bridge while everyone injured were ordered to head to the medibay. One intruder was in the medibay himself, and we managed to overwhelm him and take him prisonor. As for the last one, we sent him out an airlock in FC bay 2. No one died during the attack inside the ship. Although, one of my escorts got blown up, and the other one went back through pravis. So i was once again, left alone in Capella, in ambush mode, around the Pravis/Capella jumpgate.

NEWS FLASH

ICV-Daedalus was taken out in the Gammulan Quadrant by 20 intruders.

So anyways I was in Midae just kinda sitting around waiting for ships to jump in. Then I see a transport jump in and think its easy money while its engines are recharging. So anyways I jump to the transport and with 10 seconds left on my jump, an Engstrom and a Megaron decloak about 5 kilometers away from my ship. Both ships unleashed fighters and their PTAs. At any rate my shields were down almost instantly (I had just started this game and hadn't upgraded them yet) Kendrick started rattling off damage reports, I swear it sounded like everything on the ship was broken. The Engstrom jumped to Caanan, I successfully destroyed the Megaron. Afterwords I ended up finally destroying the transport, though no cargo pod was found. Total damage? Very few system above 80% integrity, FC and cargo bays almost destroyed, and a crap ton of other stuff that had to be repaired.

Yikes Nwah. Getting the shield upgrade first is always a top priority. As for your luck, yeah, the game is occasionally a bitch and decides to cloak a couple of carriers near you or your assets. (I recently lost 2 FCs because of a cloaked firestorm near a jumpgate)

As for me, i just went up against an xtender ods orbiting Luna. I had already gotten 20 missile shrapnel penetrated through my shield on the last ODS which diminished my shield strength to 88%, luckily the ODS was busy firing at FCS to notice me, which made my missile shrapnel the only thing hit my hull. I went against this ODS, and the bastard just ripped through my shield like butter when i had the Linear IV shield. It took 5 shots to get through my shield. It took another 2 to destroy Cargo Bay 2, which destroyed both of my artifacts. By that time i realized i had to cloak, so i turned on my cloaking device, not before a third shot ripped through my hull and destroyed my bridge. I looked in tactical and i was surprised that myself and my officers hadn't been killed with the bridge. So i was forced to repair my bridge for a few moments to allow my crew back in. I destroyed the ODS, and then jumped to the Insurgent owned Galcom HQ to get repairs started. :looksaround:

I advise not jumping to ODS's with a damaged shield. I also advice carrying repair materials and a back-up set of minerals and supplies in a shuttle incase your cargo bays get destroyed or if you run out of something.

My only close call so far, last night in fact!

Myself and the GCV-Hawk were on our way back to Sol sector to collect our mining drones after a rather dull patrol around the Polaris system. Whilst passing through Lennen, I notice an enemy Firestorm making a nuisance of itself. After deciding that returning to base having only one kill would perhaps not go down too well with command, I make the order to engage.

A brief but decisive battle follows. I manage to take out all the Firestorm's complement of fighters, and start making a dent on its shields when it hyperjumps out! The cowardly git!

Not wanting to be deprived of my kill, I order the helmsman to give chase. We follow him to krystar, managing to get a few pot-shots when we catch up with him after each jump before he passes through the gates, but aren't able to inflict any serious damage.

Finally when reaching Krystar I manage to let off a few missles and take down his shields, and can finally let the main guns rip through his hull. The explosion was spectacular and the crew are joyous! We even open the bottle of champagne we'd been saving for a safe return to base!

I decide to launch a shuttle on cargosweep orders to see if the Firestorm left us any presents and take a look at the logistix computer to see what the damage was. We had a few intruders during the attack who made it their priority to wreak as much mayhem as they could before being despatched by my marine forces.

They'd managed some minor damage to several areas of the ship, so I decide to assign the engineers to sort us out while I wait for the shuttle, I'm in no rush anyway.

I order shields down to 25% to conserve resources (the other reason we were returning to Sol was to stock up, I was running rather low on radine and plutonium!) and set a slow course just to keep us on the move.

After a few minutes of safe floating around in space *ALARM ALARM* the alarms sound and before I'm able to give the order to raise shields, a Megaron has decloaked and begun a full attack on my ship. She's already tearing through my hull now, and all I can see is red squared coming up on the damage monitor. I have to act quickly or we are all dead!

I order turrets and guns to full power, and launch my remaining fighter. The PTA systems and my FC easily take care of the fighter. I take control of the helm and turn to engage the Megaron. Luckily, he appears to be performing some evasive manuvers and I manage to launch every missile I have and destroy him with the last of the power left in the ship! Just seconds after he is destroyed, the nuclear reactor fails and I'm left floating in space. Not good!

My last FC has been destroyed and I'm left for dead in space. 50% hull and armor, Nuclear reactor down, almost every component of the ship is left either badly damaged or destroyed. Life support is failing. Things have just gone critical!

My only power was coming from my only functioning solar panel. I'm able to limp through the nearby wormhole where on the next side I knew there was a friendly base. After an hour of limping at extremely low speeds, we make it across the wormhole.

I had no idea how I was going to reach the base. The hyperdrive and engine were now completely inactive and I am tempted to self destruct!

When I remember....THE SHUTTLE! Joy spreads across the bridge as I order our last surviving support craft to come and tow us to the nearby friendly starstation. Tears are streaming across Resnig's ugly face as we dock. After spending 3 hours on repairs on the starstation we depart. We're still in a pretty bad way but now have all critical systems on-line we set a course for Galcom HQ - Maximum speed and shilds needless to say, remained on 100% throughout the rest of the journey!!

The only thing left was to explain to the Station Commander why I was only bringing back half a ship!

Thats my story, I hope you all enjoyed.

Sev.

Woah, that was a really close call huh?

I just had another one happen recently.

I was in Gamma-1, and i clumsily destroyed Hexar station instead of capturing it. Used my Engstrom to take it out, only with EMD, no cloak. My shields dropped to 20% at the lowest. Over powered carrier ftw.

So anyways, a minute after when i was checking my assets and etc., my shields stopped functioning. Apparently, i ran out of plutonium. So i jumped to the planet, and what do you know. A couple of fighters follow me. I turned on EMD and turned my PTA towards them. What i didn't know, incidentally, that i was going straight for a fighter that my PTA was about to destroy.

And thats when things started getting BAD.

My PTA blew up the fighter and i flew straight into the explosion. The shrapnel took my hull down 2%, damaged a couple systems on deck 3 to 95%, and totally F'd over my nuclear reactor. The officers rattled on while i was positioning myself for maximum solar power. The engines even managed to work for a minute so i could slow down (thank you solar battery :) ) I checked logistics, and it my NR was destroyed, and i was a core housing unit short. I cleared the radiation.

Tried calling for a tow, luckily i realized could still turn my Nuclear reactor on in short bursts so comm, tactical, and sub-light engines could work. Unluckily, no one was there.

Went in my fighter, blowing up ships looking for a core housing unit in the pods. Gave up eventually. Didn't feel like towing a broken ship, with 4 intruder-caused missing assets and about 16 intruders that were also fiddling around with Resnig's porn collection on the sub-deck.

It's a close call because i saved 10 minutes before in the system below Gamma-1. Thank god i decided to save over my trip in the Pravis system.

Phew.
