ensign1

check it out

fly your own ship. go inside its turret. use its turret. fly to a capital ship. dock at the capital ship. switch to FPS view, walk to your hatch, exit your ship. Your in the hangar bay of the capital ship, you can see your ship you just docked. You can walk to the bridge of the capital ship and take control.

cant describe it better than that, just watch.

Wow, Ensign-1 is hard to find. Glad I came across it on the forum. It was listed in the arcade section of the indie MOD database site. Looks anything but arcade. Looks like a very interesting game- especially because you can go in first person mode on any ship- including capital ships and fighters.

The game I thought looked good was Star Point Gemini. What I like about it the most was that it had gimbaled targeting and beam weapons. It had beam weapons even on fighters.

Also found out on the forum that Starshatter was not as unique as I thought when I did a forum search for it. Capital ship maneuvering is ackward in that game because it will not let you do a full 360 degree loop.

I pledged $75 for this game when it was on kickstarter so I got a copy of the pre-alpha prototype, its coming along nicely and will have a public beta release by early 2015. The space trade/combat/exploration genre really is making a resurgence.

http://ltheory.com

›› Infinite, Open World

Each universe generated by the Limit Theory Engine has an infinite number of star systems to explore. As far as your journeys take you, you will never encounter the edge of space. Truly, you can never exhaust the possibilities of this universe.

›› All Things Procedural

All of the content that populates each universe is generated by the computer, using a technique known as procedural content generation. This means that next time you start a game, not only will the universe be different - but all things therein as well, including factions, goods, weapons, ships, mission opportunities, stations, planets, AI pilots, and more. Each universe is a totally unique experience without end.

›› Large-Scale Combat

Encounter epic battles between massive fleets with hundreds of ships. Take sides and join the fight, or earn enough wealth to purchase and command your own fleet to crush your adversaries.

›› Dynamic Economy

You won't find fixed prices here. The Limit Theory economy is dynamically driven by supply and demand. Moreover, events that occur in the universe - raids, blockades, factional takeovers, and so on - may change the entire dynamic of a region's economy. Your actions are no exception. As you become more influential, you may find your operations to have a significant impact on the surrounding systems.

›› Immersive Mining

Actively search for ore in asteroid fields, then physically extract it using weaponry or, even better, specialized mining beams. While scanning may be necessary to ascertain the exact contents of an asteroid, ore-rich asteroids can be spotted visually from afar.

›› Planetary Interaction

Land on planets and visit distinct locations. Look for the best deals or interesting jobs at trade hubs, or visit factories, ship dealers, faction headquarters, mines, and more. With the right connections, you may even become privy to secret, less-than-legal locations on planets. The planetary interaction system makes each planet a small adventure in and of itself.

›› Living Universe

You aren't the center of the Limit Theory universe. AI players live their lives as well, and throughout your journey in the universe you will see factions fall, planets overrun, wars waged, treaties signed, and so on. Inevitably, you will cross paths many times with the NPCs trying to forge a life in the universe - for better or for worse.

›› Ownable Fleets, Stations, and Planetary Buildings

Not only can you purchase more than one ship, but you can also expand your operations to include any number of custom space stations, as well as buildings on planet surfaces. The game isn't over just because you've acquired the best ship and weapons...far from it.

I particularly like this bit, that seems missing from other space sims etc:

That's what really got my interest, I can't wait for it to be finished! My first thought when I tried the prototype was like WOW this is UC on steroids lol ^^

Yeah I can't wait for it to come out! I was really hoping Derek would make a new BC title like this, because although overall ltheory will be amazing to play, it'll still be lacking in a certain 'capital ship' style atmosphere. There's no crew management, and reparing is just a case of clicking "repair" and you're immediately repaired which is a bit boring, I prefer Derek's system of having engineers etc and ship staff.

One thing also about universal combat is the missions in a campaign are structured and complex. You get that feeling like you are captain picard because you are asked to do so much. In other space combat simulations, it is straight combat. In fact, in the manual, it says that going on a galactic killing spree does not get you promoted.

Has anybody heard of the game Rebel Galaxy? I did a forum search for Rebel Galaxy and found that it was not mentioned in the forum.

It is a game where you get to pilot a big ship and do lots of destruction. The website describes the game well and is very dramatically and interestingly written. Check it out at

Wow. You trade, mine, and shoot other ships? This totally doesn't remind me of a dozen other games.

Looks like another bundle of boring repetition. As soon as players stop being 'awed' by the combat graphics it will become all too apparent that this game is just another 'credit' grind fest: Pick up quest, spend time traveling, have a battle, travel back, claim reward, repeat. Personally, even if they do have captivating combat animations, employing a worn out economy "quest" system is just tasteless. That's what it looks like they are doing. I thought devs would learn by now...

Yes it is repetitive shooting of other ships- but you do it it with a capital ship. You get to be a big bully and cause lots of destruction. That is appealing.

Good air or space combat is important. But if the missions are repetitive, the game is only fun if it has a dynamic campaign. Star Shatter has a dynamic campaign. But haven't tried it to see if it has as exciting a dynamic campaign as Falcon 4.

What's good about universal combat is that the mission orders are complex. Many mission orders have to be read twice to understand. The game is only as good as its missions. And Universal Combat has good missions. And very good combat.

I guess it's a capital ship, but it doesn't really look like they did much with it except add size and weapons.

I agree that if sandbox is crap then the game deserves to have a dynamic campaign. But if it has no dynamic sandbox either then I'm not really into spending any amount of money to just get 15-20 hours of playtime, you know? Games like starshatter are the exception though. And as for UC, I did not really play it for the missions or campaigns, as I tended to either have technical problems or just did not enjoy the types of tasks. The sandbox, level of ship detail, and the combat(along with those intruders) is really what got me... until I started playing those Engstom super carriers and etc. Killed the fun by being too OP.

Games can get stale when the enemy is overpowered and you get the upperhand through ship upgrades. Once the game reaches OP, then you stop playing. Doesn't mean the game isn't good. Just that you don't have to play a campaign to the bitter end.

Sometimes, however it is worth sticking with it and seeing if the enemy gets really mad. I saw one person on the forum get attacked by 15 fighters at once. If you determine that the enemy isn't going to react, then it is time to quit-but sometimes you want to stick it out for a while to be sure.

Try reading this post where one player really got them mad at post 58 at
