Guest BorgKilla Posted April 20, 2000 Report Posted April 20, 2000 To all and sundry.A year or so ago, I bought BC3k for around 5 British Pounds (around $7 funny money).I knew before-hand that is was a buggy product, but being a fan of the genre (I used to play Star Raiders, anyone remember that one?) and having played many a space combat/strategy sim since, I thought "What the heck?" and spent my hard earned wonga.I took the game home, unwrapped and loaded it onto my (now deceased) P233 system, and ran the game for the first time.First impressions where not good, so I started on the readme's and online updates/patches etc, so that hopefully I could use the nice 3d-ness of my VooDoo 2s (Long Live SLI!). No joy. Still ran (slowly) in s/ware mode (urghhh!). I spent, in all, the best part of a day trying to get the updates/patches/general bug fixes working, and still ended up with a game that looked and played, to all intents and purposes, the same as when I first loaded it.Now I know that the retail release of BC3K was an unfinished product (please Dr. Smart, don't give in to the corporate monsters again!?!), but from what I hear from various sources, the game is worth another look, and big things are about to happen.So I want to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak.Should I dust-off my old copy of BC3K and devote another portion of my life to it, or did I just give up too easily in the first place?Sell the game to me!! I certainly don't think Homeworld players aren't welcome here, besides there's no flaming allowed on this board anyways (it's HEAVILY moderated). I LOVE that game, it's tied for my favorite RTS of all time (TA being the other). I know there's other Homeworld players here as well, and as for me I'll be buying HW:C in the same amount of mili-seconds after it touches a store shelf as it will take me to snag BC:M =)As far as I'm concerned "Welcome aboard". (I've probably bought and played about 90% of all the space sim games ever made)I must admit that I don't really like too many RTS games... (unless of course they are space based) However, I bought and played Homeworld and to my surprise I liked it very much. The music kicks ass! Ok that said, on to why you should try BC3K again....First off if you are looking for a fast paced shoot-em up with pretty graphics, then you are in the wrong place. Go get Freespace 2. BC3K is a much different game. What keeps me playing BC3K is the dynamic interactive universe and the sheer number of ways to play.There is a scripted campaign you can play.You can play freeflight, where you launch and do what ever you want. (my personal favorite)There is also an extreme carnage mode where you fly an interceptor against wave after wave of increasingly difficult opponents.There are also scripts available that allow you to play as other castes as well. While your primary responsibility in BC3K is commanding your Battlecruiser and crew, you can also take direct control of your other onboard craft as well....Interceptors - for dogfighting and attacking planet surface targets.Shuttles - for ferrying supplies, troops, ATV's(tanks)and mining drones and for collecting cargo pods and capturing disabled spacecraft.ATV's - for attacking surface targets. With fleet command and control, you can control and command entire fleets of ships. (kinda like Homeworld )You can also buy many upgrades for your ship. weapons shields systems etc... BC3K is not limited to space either. You can also attack cities and military bases on the planet surfaces.(There are over 7000 planetary mission zones to play in!) The best part in all of this is that the entire universe is dynamic, enemies will attack you, try to steal your support craft, and basically give you problems at every turn. They will even attack each other.You can choose to try to dominate the universe and capture every starstation in the game, or you can hide in a quiet corner of the galaxy, trading and minding your own business... its up to you...Coming soon will be BCM featuring online play, an expansion module that will let you take first person control of your alter ego and fight throughout your battlecruiser in first person view, and a sequel Bc3020.Add to that an avid fan base and community.... etc etc... You need to get a hold of v2.08 which has been on sale in the UK since 10/99. Check the Game or Virgin stores. Or go to the GT site at www.gtvalue.com But before doing that, why not try the demo and then see if you like it or not?

With that in mind, what is your slant on IG2-Alliances? I was a big fan of the (slightly strange) original (some of the cut scenes never survived the translation from Hungarian to English I fear), and played it to completion several times (many a sleepless night). A bit linear, but IG2 appears to have a more organic story-line, coupled with multiple add-on scenarios from Digital Reality (now Infogrames), looks like more of a challenge (demo plays well anyway).Rgds,BorgKilla. ____________________If it hurts, don't eat it!PS the screen shots for 2.08 look alot better than what I saw all those months ago, time to crack out the Amex. Once I return from my little holiday, I can read them and them probably download the demo anyway, but today is not the time. After all, BC3K v2.0 was first released on 10/98, so, we're just whipping the newbies, like you, into shape. You want to see posts? Set the view criteria back as far as you can. If you feel particularly ambitious, set it for as far as it will let you. You'll get the whole picture that way. Once you've become familiar with the gameplay, imagine when you look at the Navitron galactic map, that you can go visit all those systems (planets/moons/spatial anomalies/star stations/planet surfaces), meet interesting races/castes, and blow them up.I, too, own a copy of BC300AD v1.0x and elected to purchase a new copy of v2.0x (it was v2.07), upgrading to 2.08, then 2.09, and adding the MapPak without any problems. If the game is too difficult, the SC has given you the ability to "enhance" your abilities through the downloadable PlayMod. You can also research topics on this board, and if you have a new problem and you've Read The FINE Manual (RTFM), posting it on the board for newbies will get a prompt reply (unless it is in the manual or on a previous post, in which case you are taken to the nearest airlock for cadet re-education/retraining).I've been playing this game for the past 4 weeks and have not touched my previously "hot" games of Jane's USAF and Jane's F18 since I loaded up BC3000. We just did an age poll, and it appears that this board has as many youngins as that other board over there. However, from what I read, this is a much more civil place to be. Nobody here is hacking anybody else; we don't flame, but we do express reasoned opinions. But most of all, everyone is supportive of each other.That adds tremendously to the total experience.

It is exactly half-way between Houston and Ft. Lauderdale. I'd stay at the EconoLodge right by the I-10 exit, and have breakfast at that family-style restaurant across the street (can't remember the name - don't even know if it is still there).Never made it more than 2 miles from the exit, though. But it looks like a nice place. I don't get over that way anymore.
