Supreme Cmdr Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 A good read: http://slashdot.org/features/99/04/29/0124247.shtml
Gallion Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 I must agree, Interesting read. Each generation must find and define its own identity it seems. So much for the New World Order IMO.
Rattler Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 Yes, Very interesting reading indeed. We used to call them nerds/misfits, and the like. Funny thing though. Back in my younger years we could always count on those misfits to become Doctors, Lawyers, Scientists, etc; . I'm not sure what we can count on them becoming in today's society though. Call me old fashioned but I still believe that your children deserve the right to go to school and get a proper education. They should be entitled to do this without fear of dying at school. I also believe that, along with this entitlement, it's their obligation to ensure that they make the best of what is offered. Now, for the teachers! It's their right to be safe in their work place as well. That's paramount to their performing their job to the specifications that WE pay them for. Make them safe and then hold their feet to the fire!I'll get off my soapbox now.......NEXT?------------------ Rattler, Insurgent One Commander-In-Chief, Insurgency Official BC3K Tester [email protected] ICQ 12894104"Long Live The Insurgency, Long Live Mother Earth, And Long Live Battlecruiser Developers and Fans!"[This message has been edited by Rattler (edited 04-25-2000).]
thanatos Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 Some interesting points to ponder; school clubs for gaming? culture of today including Q3, Tribes, and UT? respect for others who don't fit the middle 85%?I remember in high school, way back in the '70's, having a hilarious time creating and refining plans to dig tunnels in the city park to collapse the municipal watertower adjacent to the school, and wash the school away with a fluoridated tsunami. My Chemistry teacher at that time saw us working on this "black-ops" during a slow lab session, read our plan, got some chuckles, and went on. Needless to say, other than some fun, nothing else ever happened and I grew up - well, I became older, anyway. If this identical scenario were to occur today, I would be one of those kids talking to the principal, guidance conselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, police, FBI, and Janet Reno, herself. How things have changed. If the Internet Police call in reference to this post, please erase my registration data.Cmdr. thanatos Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 No relationship to me or any other persons I know, living or deceased, or somewhere in-between. Thanatos - noun; death as a personificationJust wait until BC-M, and you'll see why I'm the death bringer. With my blazing internet connection of 18,000bps in the lovely rural setting of Northern Indiana, and a ping of 400-500, I'll be the scourge of all those who prey on the weak, the downtrodden, and those who think Star Trek is better than Star Wars (not Picard, but Kirk, and this doesn't include SWs-Episode One, of course). You'll recognize my battlecruiser, it'll be the one that looks like it's sitting still. A Falcon-NW Mach V with 56k modem and this is all the phone lines, strung up during the presidency of Abe Lincoln, can give. I'll be looking for a real fight sometime in late 2010, when DSL arrives to Green Acres.Back on reply, I just thought the name sounded cool and ominous - so much better than "rhoover#34567" or my UT name of "high_ping_king". It also ties in peripherally with my professional life, as a forensic pathologist. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES"We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well, and live." Mano Faber Posted April 25, 2000 Report Posted April 25, 2000 Uh oh,I kinda like alternative music that makes me a possible suspect, though i'm not from the Quake/Doom generation i never these games. Hehe, however maybe i'll get hooked on the strikepack (this is as close as i get to quake-genre)then i will fit right in : ) But seriously i was raised openminded and my mother never wore casual clothes. To make matters worse my mother wore a hat : ) I have to admit, it takes time to appreciate it, the other kids loved the 'modern mom' i didn't at that time. This part really strikes me: My life has been turned upside down over the last few days, all because I wear a trenchcoat to school. The vice principal called the local sheriff because of rumors that he herd. On Friday I had my home searched by 3 deputies I recall a similar incident from my youth where a police officer called my mother a whore because she wore a black leather jacket and the neigherhood helped to fuel the idea. There you have the volatile mixture; prejudice and narrow minded people. Guess i'm gonna hide all my black clothes now and tear my Matrix poster from the wall : ) Mano Faber GCV Aegis Prime Fleet Official BC3K Tester [email protected] www.globalxs.nl/home/m/mfaber73/academy [This message has been edited by Mano Faber (edited 04-25-2000).]
