Gallion Posted May 31, 2000 Report Posted May 31, 2000 I'll believe that Vorpal when I see a v-card other than 3dFx based chipset state that it (or they) support the Glide API (or whatever it is called). But then again I could be wrong too, wouldn't be the first or last time either The Voodoo 6000 will fit very comfortably in my case. Will have plenty of room to spare too.Bottom Line for this topic: With the prices of v-cards these days, one should contemplate how they are going to use current comp system - now and in the short-term future. Then add a few centavos and get the best v-card that their billfold can handle. $$ spent now reduced many headaches latter IMO and IME.TTFN all and may the polygon count be with thee
Guest Posted June 1, 2000 Report Posted June 1, 2000 Be prepared to bow down to the ATI Radeon later this year. Enjoy your 3d cards fellas. But looks to me that ATI ripped off the idea for their next-gen card from nvidia. Can you say GPU??------------------ "Do not fear the unknown vastness of space, embrace it."Cmdr. Guest Posted June 1, 2000 Report Posted June 1, 2000 Developers these days program for Direct3d or Opengl first and Glide 3rd - if at all. Not too surprising since glide compatible 3dfx cards are no longer the majority card like they were in the days of Voodoo1 and 2.I have a Geforce and voodoo2 SLI in my system, but find that the Voodoo2s aren't necessary for new games. Every recent game out there supports direct3d or opengl, so there is no need for glide support. Some games that don't need glide: Starfleet Command, Homeworld, Team Alligator, Gunship, Unreal Tournament, Star Trek Armada, Imperium Galactica 2, Soldier of Fortune, Swat 3.The only recent games I can think of that benefited from glide are some of the older unreal-engine games (like Wheel of Time before the latest patch), and Ultima 9 (which ran like crap without Glide). For at least the last year the API of choice for developers has not been glide. I would recommend against getting a Voodoo 5 specifically for glide support unless you intend to use it specifically to play legacy games (like BC3kv2.9). An alternative to getting a voodoo5 might be to instead get voodoo2 SLI (should cost only $50 per card now).Of course, there might be other good reasons to get a voodoo5 than glide support. The voodoo5 6000 will be the fastest card on the block (at least till the fall when the Nvidia NV20 is supposed to come out).
Guest Posted June 1, 2000 Report Posted June 1, 2000 Gallion: http://www.3dfx.com/comp/news/rel-06dec.html Canusa: Better image quality, FSAA (which is what I'm jazzed about) and better memory management also come witht the V5 =) Glide support is icing. Both are great cards though, there's not really a wrong choice. I saw some cool bump mapping effect on a creature's skin for Ultima Online 2 that works on the GeForce 2. The new Matrox card is sounding pretty sweet as well that dual monitor support just kicks.
Eclipse Posted June 2, 2000 Report Posted June 2, 2000 Well after looking around some on my own and reading your posts, it would seem that the geforce 2 would probably be better for me. BTW is it just me or is it really quiet on the board today? is there some holiday I missed?------------------ Cmdr. Guest CmdrBlacky Posted June 2, 2000 Report Posted June 2, 2000 As for Video cards, you can allways wait for something better. Like someone else has already mentioned, it's best to consider what you have now and what is available now. Sure the Radeon will kick but the Geforce 2 is out now. From the looks of it, they should be comparable cards performance wise. The biggest selling point for me is the driver support. I won't consider the voodoo chipset for already stated reasons. T&L will be the way to go. Anyway enough said. Got burnt out on space sims for a while. Got into playing Tribes. It's awesome. Tribes 2 will be even better as will Halo. Continously looking forward to new releases in the BC3K universe, signing off.
