Actaually I thought that I had come up with an original name - much to my chagrin when I did a yellow/white pages search during my early days on the net.

Name of PnP RP character from days of youth. Computers were for the well-to-do in those days. Origonallt name was Gal-Lion, quasi french type name, then I got lazy and dumped the hyphen. Which results in name today. But if ye ever runs into a 13/14/16 level CN F/MU/T - watch ye backside and purse strings

Well, my game name is, WALLA, the same as my given name. Being half Norwegian I thought about Viking, but didn't. My ship name is a Norwegian warship with the Dragon's head.

And Blades, I know a bit how you feel since in the USA, Shannon has been 'strictly' a girl's name. Went to lots of elementary schools in farm country...

Well, my user name is my RL name, without the 'Jr.' suffix.

My email address ([email protected]) is made of two things: My nickname "Bilbo" (from The Hobbit's Bilbo Baggins), which my parents and best friend have been calling me for years. The second part is my birthday (May 24th).

My RP name (Alun Tringad) is the name of a supporting character in a trilogy of books I read awhile back. I liked it, so I've been using it ever since. It's Scottish Celtic, BTW.

I named my ship "Black Falcon" because I love all birds of prey. I wanted to name my ship the "Raven", but someone *coughAkiracough* had that as his nickname already. I tagged Black on the front because it sounded cool.

My character's name came from about 10 minutes of thinking when I signed up for the forum and the DB. Ryan came from the famous Ryan Styles from the "Drew Carey" show and "Whos Line is it Anyway?" And my last name came from the Monopoly box sitting above my head. It says Parker Brothers on it, and I said "What the hell?" and used Parker as my last name

Well my real name if Carl Hughes and Karl Wolf is just a simple twist of that. I use the name Karl Wolf only for this game my online name is Thesiuss, I picked that up after I finished graduate school.

When deciding a name for my ship I wanted it to have a religious twist that when thought of inspired my allies and frighten my enemies. Thus Hammer of God, why a religious twist? My father and my grandfather are both Baptist preachers and I consider myself to be a God fearing man also.

When I decided on a character motto I wanted something that embodied my character thoughts, emotions and his belief in the BC universe since I had chosen EarthCOM I figured a hardliner totally pro-earth anti-alien type person. Thus you have, "When it comes down to it, Earth is first and everyone else can go to Hell."

There you have it in a nutshell.

In September of 1998, I stumbled over the old free v1.07 at some site (can't remember which one) and ran across this site some time later. I started reading the forum - but for some strange reason, it didn't occur to me to actually register until almost a year later.

The reason I registered at all was because something happened that the Manual, FAQ, VCF, and the Forum didn't cover - two stations in the same region! So, I choose my favorite ACM character (Mark Stryker[i/]) and decided to have my rp character be a relative of his (this, to my knowledge, was before the SC wroterevised the game copyright rules to restrict the use of that name). On September 1st 1999, I registered as Kirk Stryker and opened the thread, two stations in the same region (SC, Rattler and Chavik all posted on it so you guys may remember it).

About six months later, while discussing my position in the Gamma Wing News thread, Akira noticing my illegal name, permanently restricted me from posting. Badgerius suggested I re-register as Kirk Stroika but I didn't like that. So after discussing my new name with Akira over e-mail, I re-registered with my unique combination of Striker and Stroika - Kirk Stroiker.

Zwycky- name of my ancestors about 4 generations back, fled from Czech Republic to Switzerland during the Hussite wars so I'm told. If you go to a town called Mollis near Nafels there's a big sort of cubic house with all these Zwycky crests on it. Since I loved all things Czech and still do, I thought I'd use that name. (And Svoboda for the ship which is the czech word for freedom, and a common surname in the Czech Republic) Also, it's a bit catchier than my real name of Ben Watson-Jones. It's only been double-barrelled for a couple of generations. It used to be Jones, but one of my great uncles was a very famous surgeon who was getting confused with another very famous surgeon called R. Jones, so he had the family middle name added to the surname to make Watson-Jones.

Ok, my turn.

Rico Jansen - Just my real name. A bit odd maybe. Rico is known to be a spannish name, but I'm as dutch as can be. My parents have nothing in their life relating to Spain. My mom is just a normal dutch woman. And my dad is also dutch, but born in Indonesia just before WW2 started overthere. No reason for me to name me like that at all. But they did. Rico is supposed to mean rich or wealthy (which I'm not) in spannish, but also delicious, according to a mexican friend. Nothing wrong with that, I'd say. Jansen is prettymuch the most common last name here. Sort of like Johnson in english. I also have a middle name I hardly use. Valentijn, which I got because I was supposed to be born close to Valentine's day.

I started my newby life on the internet on yahoo alot. I guess I'm nosy and like to search alot. In the beginning I was also chatting around alot. I had to come up with a nickname. I liked startek and had a thing for the space probes sent out in the solar system so my thoughts ended up at Startek The Motionpicture. I loved the story. So why not stick to it. v_ger. Or V'ger as I intended. But that wasn't allowed for some reason. Well, v_ger became the username of a yahoo profile and sometime later I figured out I could get an online mailbox. Handy, as I used to (and still do) be from home alot. So, that's it.

As for my ship's name. It's a bit lame or not really meant one. It's named after a famous dutch navy admiral "Michiel Adriaanz De Ruyter" that lived sometime in the middle of 16-hundred. As it's common to name ships after famous naval commanders I thought, why not mine. But it's not really personal so I wouldn't mind changing it's name. But I'm going to wait until I loose it in MP. It shall deserve it's time to sail.

My commanders name is the same as my real name. Except for the fact that used my yahoo username as my nick when I registered for the fleet. But I dropped it soon. Didn't matter that much.

I come from an ancient line of role-playing gamers. My nickname, fom an early time, was "Dumb Elf". I loved all things elven - the racial characteristics, the concept of the tragic, dying race, superior in intellect and skills to humans but hampered by their slighter physiology and inability to breed like rabbits. All elves, from Tolkein, to the Forgotten Realms/D&D/Warhammer style elves inspired me.

I played tons and tons of role-playing games, and usually played an Elven sorceror/enchanter/mage. Finding a good name was difficult. When I went to university, I got into MUDding in a BIG way. I went through a number of different names. Then I got involved in administering a MUD. In essence, my character was the equivalent of a God on this MUD, along with the other administrators. My name at the time was Loeryn, but the others found it untypable. My nickname, Dumb Elf, was brought out once more (my characters had never been powerful; I believe the innate disabilities of the elvenm race carry over into games, etc., but I didn;t have the heart to play as any other race). Since I was seeing these people in real life, they shortened it to D'Elf (because that sounded cooler).

When I got into the SF scene, I needed a cool sounding name. An old-fashioned nickname for Elves and Faeries is the Sylvan races, and so I created "DeSylva" - meaning Of the Elves. It stuck, and the funniest part is that the kind of person DeSylva became (before his untimely death) was decidedly unelfish.

Gareth was chosen because I wanted a name that sounded stately, but at the same time down to earth and serious. Therefore - Gareth DeSylva.

As for my ship name, I don't have a military history. Although several members of my family have served in wars, the only place my violent tendencies ever get trotted out are in computer games. I'm unfit, out of shape, and would never make a good soldier. As a result, the realities of war are a far cry from my life. While other people were choosing names that signified beasts of war and other war-like concepts, I wanted something that sounded different, positive. I wanted to portray what I see Galactic Command as - a protector in the space-lanes, while Earth Command remains the military aggressor.

So that's about it! I'm a trained Registered Nurse, which is why Gareth became a Combat Medic before he became a Commander. As I've said, I'm not cut out for the military life, which is why Gareth is once of the more rebellious commanders - I think deep down he feels guilty that he has the skills to fight war, and would rather he did not. And Emma Norbury - based loosely on my fiance, also a Nurse.

I was going through a lot of problems when I stumbled across the BC website and community. Being able to empower my characters in the fight against the Insurgency in many ways helped me empower myself and my own life. That's a hefty gift I earned from this game and this community. And even though RL committments precent me from being a part of this community now, I'd like to think that Gareth DeSylva will live on, and that the GCV-First Light will continue to serve as a proud warship in the GALCOM fleet, with it's new commander at the helm.
