I've been thinking about upgrading to WinME, but don't want another mess like Win2k was. I've not really heard much about ME and I was wondering what your opinions were of it.

Could an Admin move this to the general forum... I forgot where I was when I posted.

If you are already running Win98SE, there is no reason to upgrade unless you really need the included image editing software. ME is mainly a "feature patch" and does extremely little to actually upgrade the OS.

Huh? Man, I'm running W2K and it's rock stable. Heck, the games I play that are DircectX run fine too.

In fact, the only problem I've had is with the stress test of Mech4. It's alph and it shows smile.gif

Several of us up here are running WinMe and It's a good upgrade! I have no problems with it but I surely didn't forget that I have 98SE sitting here just in case! cool.gif

My real beef with WinME is that it is not an essential upgrade in that it doesn't provide any substantial fixes to Win98SE. If you're getting a new machine, get WinME. If you're just wanting a stable machine don't spend the $49 to upgrade unless your machine isn't stable and then realize that the upgrade probably won't be a silver bullet.

I'm running WinMe.. I like the new/improved features, plus my performance is a little better.

My only big beeyatch (what, no more of the 5-lettered dog word? Bah!) is the fact that Gill Bates felt it necessary to negate DOS support. You won't believe the hair-pulling I had to do to flash my BIOS the other day (whilst installing my 40 gig HD).. since my other system has Win98, I had to make a Boot disk off of that, then load my essential drivers (CDROM, SB Live DOS stuff, etc) onto there. It's messy, and keeps moaning about a "Data error reading Drive A" every now and then, but at least I can actually use pure DOS smile.gif Anyone else planning to upgrade to WinMe should keep this in mind if you plan to use DOS again.. (hey, I KNOW I ain't the only one who still plays Crusader: No Remorse!)

Akira: Win2k was stable, but it was a mess getting hardware set up and some of mt software would just disappear after running for awhile.

Parias, there is a 5K hack that exposes the MS-DOS option under winME, somewhere on the net. Can't remember where I saw it though. Check ZDnet.

I'll hunt around for it, thanks SC!

WinME is a good OS, but it requires a little bit more RAM than 98. The only reason that made me upgrade to WinME (and I don't regret it) is the fact that under Win98 my FIC SD11 (atlon motherboard) was totally unstable. ME's default MB drivers fixed all my problems. Another good thing about ME is that most nukers don't work on it.. smile.gif

There are bad things about it , too, such as the new MS Network model (that sucks IMHO), some WIERD crashes and blue screens (that don't appear too often), and MSIE 5.5..

Overall it's more stable than 9x, or at leas t for me it is..

WinME is built on a 9x kernel, not on NT.I didn't have problems with drivers, or stuff like that..
