I just had a new computer, one that reaches the BCM requirements.

Everything goes well... smooth... very happy... and < Screen goes blank, computer beep > Computer resets ($&!$%&"$!)

Okay, it has been a week and a half that I've been using my computer, and it has been a week and half that I had those problems. Knowing quite a lot of thing about computer software and hardware I started my investigation...

Here's my whole story:

Computer:

AMD K6-2 500mhz 3Dnow!

Soyo SY-5SSM/5 chipset 530 motherboard

/w ESS solo1 audiodrive

/w 8mb "AGP" SiS 530

1x64mb SDRAM pc-133

52x CD-ROM drive

Diamond Monster 3D overlay D3D-3Dfx video card

1.44 floppy

6.4 gig Western-digital HD

Win98SE french

Standard PS/2 optical mouse

Standard PS/2 windows keyboard

14" NEC monitor

250w "Gold power" PSU

I originally had Corel linux (I save 150$CAN by having linux intalled instead of Windows), but reformated and installed Win98, successfully.

Since linux was intalled, I had to download the drivers from Soyo's website for the VDO and SND for Windows.

At first, the video drivers didn't wanted to get loaded. Result: stuck in 640x480, 16 colors. As my friend reccommended, I deleted the drivers from the system panel. Windows reinstalled the drivers by itself and everything was ok, 1024x768, 32bits colors.

After, the ESS solo-1 couldn't play play a sound without resetting after it has finished. That 72 minutes mp3 is great, but when it ends...

Did the same thing. Strangely, it worked.

But my problem was still there. It was (and is) happening much less often, but still happen. To that point, I only thought that it could be software related and SND-VDO related, but it seemed not.

Later on, having downloaded an hardware monitor, I saw red. As the program monitors voltage levels (12v, 5v, 3.3v and CPU 2.2), the 12v, which the program states that the security level maximum is 12.6v, was going crazy at ranges from 12.65v to 12.85, sometimes reaching 13v. I know that voltage is critical for a computer.

Ok, then two thing could be in cause:

1 - The bios has power-management problems;

2 - The PSU has a defectiveness.

Also, the computer resets most often when the hard-drive is working a lot: getting out of games, installing BC3k patches... but I can play at quake II an entire afternoon (3Dfx/OpenGL... COOOLLL!!! cwm24.gif ), and it only resets when I exit the game... inevitably. The computer will never reset left idle.

Okay, then, you might think (or ask) "what do you want us to do?"

What I need is an advice before I contact the store where I bought the computer. Am I right? Could it possibly be something else? Are you totally lost with my charabia?

Boy, that French-english dictionnary really comes in handy... cwm15.gif

Thanks in advance.

You know what's funny? I have the exact same problem....and I have win 98 *insert horror music*

Heh, those are a headache to find. Isn't that an all-in one board--main video and sound built into the motherboard?

If the unit is still under warranty and depending on easy they are to work w/ I'ld take it back and ask them about the PSU show them what's going on. Just about anything in the box could be causing your symptoms.

Me?

1. Make sure I have the current drivers for all devices.

2. I would boot to safe mode, open device manager and look for dupe drivers or unnecessary drivers that are loaded. If there are dupes+ I delete them all, w/ a few exceptions like PCI steering. When Win reboots, it will reload the drivers.

3. Search the web for sites that have info on that specific motherboard or the 530 chipsets. May find the answer there.

4. Physically remove the Monster 3D (pci card, correct?), and the software for it then run things.

Actually, there are two thing I forgot to tell about:

In my system panel, under "Other peripherals", I have an unidentified PCI card (that I deactivated).

I have alos the ESS solo-1 DOS emulation. I deactivated it and some problems went away.

I don't know what exactly you are talking about.

heh.

I used to have problems with my printer. It would jam, not print, and generally make my system more unstable. When I got a new printer cable (my parents took the old one back) it worked just fine...and does now.

I bet it's the IOmega zip drive that's the problem because it created not 1 , but 2, yes 2 devices under SystemIf you wonder why I chose the angry icon, it's because I typed this up....2 times before forgot to fill in the name and password or entered the wrong name and I lost it.

Check to see if anything is sharing IRQ's with your vid or sound boards.

Ah, that's another thing I forgot to talk about. Someone who have experience in the domain asked for the same thing. In my CMOS setup, all IRQ and DMA were set to automatic allocation (There is two choices: PCI/ISA PnP or ISA legacy), but the guy told me to set some IRQs to ISA legacy, as for the CMOS default setup. I have... wait I second... rebooting the other computer...

Wold, yes, it is a all-in-one mainboard. Cost much less.

Also check them in Windows. It has a tendancy to like IRQ sharing, sometimes the hardware doesn't like it.

Well, the Iomega driver seems to have helped big time. No errors or crashes so far!

Epsilon 5, as I don't know your windows knowledge, I'm not going to assume you know something, though you probably already know how to access Device Manager.... wink.gif

At the desktop, right-click on My Computer

Left-click on Properties

Left-click on Device Manager

Make sure that the button next to "View devices by type" is selected

Double-left click "Computer" icon in list

In the window that opens up make sure that the top left button is selected "Interupt Request (IRQ)"

You now have a list of your IRQ assignments

Ignore the IRQ PCI Steering or any ACPI IRQ Holder lines

Any IRQ numbers NOT listed are available UNLESS it is marked as a Legacy ISA in your CMOS settings.

Standard (not lock in stone) IRQ settings are:

IRQ

3 Com 2

4 Com 1

5 Legacy Sound card OR network controller

6 Floppy disk controller

7 LPT1 (parallel printer port)

8 System CMOS and Real Time Clock

9 Whatever

10 Whatever

11 Video, if require by video

12 Mouse

13 numeric processor

14 Primary IDE controller

15 Secondary IDE controller

Try the folloing IRQ settings:

Open up your CMOS

Set IRQ's 14 & 15 to PCI/ISA PNP

Set IRQ 5 to legacy ISA, if you need sound for BC3K. You can then re-enable your legacy sound in windows. You will also need to change the DMA to legacy. Soundblaster pro default is DMA-1 and DMA-5. Don't know about ESS....

IF you have any dupelicate (dupe for short) IRQs you can DISABLE the on-board Com 1 and/ or Com 2 ports in cmos (assuming you aren't using them) and change the corresponding IRQ to PCI/ISA pnp.

First, my computer and windows knowledge is quite extended, so you can shorten your instruction.

Ok... let's see... good thing I put my internet access on the old computer...

The ESS soundcard is a SB clone.

I have two things on IRQ 14 and 15 (considering the fact to ignore PCI steering and ACPI - There are 4 things on IRQ 5...) which are

(it's written in frech, so abreviation may not mean the same thing in english... doing my best)

14 - Primary IDE controller (double fifo)

14 - IDE controller Sis 5513 double channel PCI

15 - Secondary IDE controller (double fifo)

15 - IDE controller Sis 5513 double channel PCI

Hope it helps...

NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW!

I think I've found my problem:

Today, I tested my modem (I forgot I had one), and each time I tried to compose the number (dialup), the computer resetted.

After that (as a though it could be my problem, I removed it (it was the mysterious unidentified PCI card of the system panel) and tested one "restting situation": playing Unreal tournament (demo) for about 10 minutes, exited and waited... and waited... so the computer DID NOT RESETTED !!! cwm24.gif

Frankly...

cwm44.gif

Oh, and for IRQ-5, here goes:

05 IRQ holder ACPI for PCI IRQ steering

05 IRQ holder ACPI for PCI IRQ steering (does appear 2 times)

05 ESS solo-1 PCI audiodrive

05 (in french) Contr├┤leur d'h├┤te ouvert PCI vers USB SiS 7001

(I think it means USB controler)

Without any further testings I cannot be sure my problem has been solved.

1. Ignore the 'IRQ holders ACPI blah blah'. There isn't anything you can do about those. You have 2 devices sharing IRQ 5. It shouldn't be a problem, but that may depend on what, if any, USB devices you have installed.

2. Do you have any free IRQs? If not, disable COM2 and/or COM1 and set those IRQs to PCI/Plug and Play in CMOS. Hopefully your modem will grab a free IRQ.

3. Check your modem install instructions. Some modems REQUIRE the software drivers to be installed FIRST before the card is installed into the computer.

IN case anyone is interested, not that anyone cares, but here is my IRQ configuration:

IRQ Usage Summary:

00 - System timer

01 - Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard

02 - Programmable interrupt controller

03 - VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

03 - Creative SB Live! Value

03 - ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering

04 - Communications Port (COM1)

05 - Creative SB16 Emulation

06 - Standard Floppy Disk Controller

07 - Printer Port (LPT1)

08 - System CMOS/real time clock

09 - SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus

10 - ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering

I don't use my modem (I have a ADSL on the other computer, which I am supposed to link with the new one in a network. The ADSL is connected to the computer by a network adapter)

And no, my USB plugs are free, and not using any com port.

Hemmm... after further tests, the computer still resets... even without the modem...

How good are you w/ a volt-meter Epsilon 5? or do you know someone who is?

1. Verify that you don't have any voltage between neutral and ground in your house wiring.

2. Does your pc have monitoring software for voltages and temps? If it does, check it.

3. strart disconnecting devices until it, hopefully, runs stable. You may have 1 component that is acting up.

I've also seen reset switches get stuck half-way in the case.

1. Dunno

2. Yes, I have a program (and already said it before) and the bios does it too.

CPU fan: ~4200rpm

CPU temp: from 30 to 40 celcius

12v : 12.6v to 12.9v

5v : 5.06v

3.3v : 3.36v

CPU vcode : 2.15v

3. What can I disconnect?!? The modem is no more there and done with the Diamond Monster 3d. Nothing. Or you are talking about disconnecting drives and/or speakers, keyboard, mouse... The VDO and SND are onboard! cwm10.gif

CPU Core voltage is too low. It should be 2.2V to 2.25V. I wouldn't go too much higher then that.

Course I'm assuming that your CPU data at top is correct.... there is an AMD K6-2e and the Vcore for that chip is 1.9V

Temp is fine.

Get the voltage bumped up to the correct level then see what happens. Don't know the specifics on that board so can't tell you how to adjust the voltage.

Pardon if this has been suggested already, I haven't read through much of the thread yet, but very recently I upgraded to an AMD Thunderbird 1.1Ghz with an ABIT KT7-RAID and had a problem of my comp randomly rebooting after the CPU was grinding away at a game for 40-odd minutes straight. The eventual solution was to pick up a fresh PSU (I had a 250 watter at the time, picked up a 300Watt). If nothing else works, consider that.

I can't change the settings. The CPU vcode was at 2.2v, but one time it rebooted it got down to 2.15v. A friend said it's a "safety measure"

About the PSU, i'll think about it.

In my experience cpu's of any make don't run under voltage very good. However, they do build in slight OVER-voltage protection. That is 1 of the things that gets bumped up a step or 2 when over-clocking a CPU. That creates more heat. The max heat rating for you cpu is 80c.

Most system boards have ways of adjusting the voltages either by CMOS, or by jumpers. Get the system board manual and dbl check. The reason is, most systems can handle a range of cpu speeds. There is often different VCORE settings for different speeds, that's why most are adjustable. There are some board out there that autosense the CPU and set the VCORE and I/O voltages automatically and these you can't adjust.

Also, there's the option that Parias suggested, buy another PSU. If you do, get the 300watter. more watter's the better.

Keep in mind, that the voltages the CPU uses are regulated by the system board. 5v is pulled of the PSU then run through a voltage regulator on the system board to get your 3.3v and 2.2v.

W/ sound an vid built into the motherboard there isn't much you can yank. Yank your ethernet, unless it's built in, then see if it crashes, if so, put it back in and yank the next item ie, cdrom, then see if it crashes.

If this is a new machine then you should still have the warranty option.

Epsilon 5, you mentioned not being able to find anything on the web about your system board. I'm not sure what search engine you used, but here's their main web page: http://www.soyo.com.tw/

According to their web site, tech support section, your system board voltages are changeable and for your current setup, VCORE is supposed to be set at 2.4V NOT 2.2V.

Oh, I went to this website, but didn't get much anything. will check again later.

All pieces for my computer came OEM, exept for the modem, which is useless for now. Yes, I have the warranty, and will use it.

I've been told that since I have a socket 7 K6-2 with 1 HD, 1 CD, and a non-agp VDO (maybe not... whatever), it does not use enough power to justify a 300w PSU

On that website they do have the strappings for changing the VCORE. I would have posted that link, but it was a sub-window and didn't have a URL for that page.

I personally did run a 500mhz AMD k6-2 for quite a while on a 250 watter myself.. w/ the AGP, SB live sound car, DVD, CDrw, 2 hard drives, network card, modem, and generic floppy. My motherboard finally died so now have upgraded to the AMD 900 Athlon. Anyway, it depends on the integrity of your current PSU. If you need another PSU, go for the 300 watter. They aren't that much more and it gives you more breathing room.

... I could use windows 95OSR2

BTW, USB has nothing to do w/ not being able to go back to win95osr2. There is USB support for that version. Nope, the problem is WIN95 and WINosr2 have a serious timing bug w/ AMD 500 K6-2 processor. Supposedly it is intermittant. NOT for me! I couldn't get windows to boot in safe mode, or regular mode -- get a 1 line error and frozen computer, every time. There IS a patch on good 'ol MS website. Course the problem w/ Micromush is that the patch is ONLY executable from WINDOWS!! cwm23.gif I finally figured out a workaround, but it was a good thing that MS programer wasn't around... grrrrr.
