Gaming Terms Explained

OK, just for fun and out of boredom, here's a few little-known facts about some of the most common gaming terms.

1: Frag -- Comes from Vietnam. During the end of the campaign, troop discipline was at an all-time low. Occassionally, troops would lob a fragmentation grenade into the tent of their commanding officer, an action known as "fragging".

2: Fog of War -- Another military term taken out of context. Fog of war does not describe not being able to spot the enemy. It actually describes a state that soldiers enter during combat. It is said that combatants loose an actual sense of reality when under fire, and forget the most basic human functions -- all except their training. This is called the "fog of war".

3: Strafe -- Another military term. Strafing is NOT moving sideways. Rather, strafing was a World War I propaganda term for lowflying aircraft raking troops with machinegun fire. It then began to encompass any time that machineguns would be used to randomly fire over a formation of troops or vehicles and is generally done by aircraft.
