Fat Activists shot down

I'm having a little bit of trouble accepting the "lack of self control" argument regarding people who are overweight or obese. I remember reading something a while ago that claimed a large number of overweight people actually have one or more serious physical illnesses that lead to their condition. People with an unusually slow metabolic rate, for example, can gain a lot of weight if they either don't eat extraordinarily lean foods or have a very small amount every day. The point is... you can't stereotype someone who's overweight (or fat or obese or whatever) as being so just because they can't control themselves. And from what I've heard, medical problems like this can be genetic - so basically kids of people who are overweight because of a physical problem are probably going to have a pretty hard time staying fit.

I'm definetly not saying that acceptance is good. There's no way I can agree with the attitude "Hey, so what if you're a little overweight? That's perfectly fine" because it's not okay and it can be unhealthy. But I guess if someone makes a conscious choice not to lose weight that there's own decision.

Oh, and by the way... a rerun of that episode of Seinfeld with Kramer smoking is one right now

The problem is that many people hide behind the genetic/slow metabolism "excuse" when they really dont suffer from it.

The US has one of the worlds highest (if not THE highest) % of overweight people in the world. Are those with these "excusable" problems breeding too fast or what?

I am overweight myself, and it aint genetic. Im just a lazy person. I hate excercise. I know that if I did some excercise I'd be a lean, mean chick magnet (umm... ok maybe not ) .

Its easier to find a scapegoat and do nothing than to git off the couch.

I wonder, if this "fat gene" (for lack of a better name) is identified...how many people claiming to have it would be willing to take the test?

How old are you?

The reason I am asking is because I could do that when I was 15, now I am 20 and I noticed that if I don't excercise I will start picking up a little weight. So metabolism does slow down with age, you just gotta move around and don't eat too much junk food.

Hi,

I would also ask of everybody to not get too thin, I myself weigh, hmmm. Well, it's double-digit pounds, and not triple as it is supposed to be. Anyway, if you get too thin, your muscles and bones will scrape aagainst eachother as you move, so most of your body hurts. You don't want that. So, as long as you're only a bit overweight, don't worry, as long as you're happy

Greetings,

Being overweight isn't neccessarily an issue, so long as you aren't overweight to the point that it's unhealthy. Same goes for underweight. Don't want to diet until you weigh too LITTLE.

That reminds me of Animal Farm...

Pigs and Humans sitting at the table but the dog watching them from the window couldn't tell which was which.
