Transcript from french email my mother received - probably applies to everyone in america.

---

Do not press 90# on your phone. I received a phone call yesterday from someone saying being a Technician working for AT&T currently testing our line. He said that to complete the test he needed me to press 90, #, and then hang up.

Fortunately, I was suspicious and I refused.

When I called the phone company, they told me that when you press 90#, you give the caller full access to the phone line, whatever the company you're on, so the caller can make long-distances calls that would be billed to me. I was informed that this tactic is used in several local prisons.

Do not press 90# for anyone.

Please pass the word to everyone you know.

Eesh... why do they have that 90# thing for anyway?

Urban legend, no doubt. They're easy to identify.

You can't control those settings from the phone on digital networks, you have to have access to registers on the phone center/MUX.

And if you could, why doesn't he tell, if it is provider independant, on which manufacturers' centers/MUXs this works?

I bet that if the reason is as serious as that, the phone company will just keep that information for themselves. (So that you won't go and try the same trick.)

Oh yeah if you see someone driving along without their headlights on at night, do not blink your high beam at them. If you do well........
