Bogus virus warning?

Just got an email from friend about a virus called sulfnbk.exe and that wehn you activate it, it lies dormant for 14 days then ruins your harddrive etc etc. It suggests you find it and delete it immediately. Now, I'm pretty wary about bogus virus warnings, but this programme does exist in my c:/windows/command file, dated 11th May 1998. Is this a real virus, or is it just a bogus warning asking me to delete a windows programme?

Anyone shed some light on the situation?

Smart people check before leaping...

Windows file. Leave it alone. If you want a second opinion, wait for someone else to answer or check the usual anti-virus web sites such as Norton's or McAffee.

A guy I work w/ got one of those emails and he wiped the file just as the email said w/out checking around. He had to reformat his drive and reload it from scratch just cause he deleted that 1 little file... I don't remember which one it was. In otherwords, HE was the "virus", not the file.

If you have a virus scanner, run it and have it scan that specific file. If you don't have a virus scanner, get one. Ok, I suggest you get one.

Yes, that phoney virus warning is going around again, this file is for Long File names in Windows, if you delete, EVERY file with a LONG file name will disapear, and you will NOT be able to get them back.

DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE.

If you have doubts about whether a file has to do with windows, go to Microsoft.com and search for that file name, the whole file name. If it is a windows file, no matter what it is, it will come up, with an explanation as to what it does and why it is there.

Any email that contains a "virus-warning" is false.

It is either :

a.) A carrier of a virus itself

b.) Wanting you to cause damage to your own comp

Official virus warnings are not sent over email. Neither are wishes, good luck, or money.

So no one please send me any.

For virus warnings look no further than the "news".

Depends. I subscribed to mcafee's newletter, and I get sometimes virus alerts. Then i go on their website and effectively, they're talking about that virus.

But I requested those warnings, that's different...
