Hunted Posted March 24, 2002 Report Posted March 24, 2002 I have brought the modern war battle to the center stage, while we wait for xp2 which will destory both these games i bring this question to the forefront! WHICH GAME IS better ? i have opf and love it! i tried gohst recon liked it but ddin't think it was as freeform as opf so i ddin't liek it, but now i hear of the TONS of mods out there , plus the addon pack which will relase a map editor! since opf does have tons of good mods out there, but the oxygen ediotr is ONLY slowly being released, well the question is which one is better, which oneis worth the buy?!
Guest Grayfox Posted March 24, 2002 Report Posted March 24, 2002 operation flashpoint is definitely better. the missions were put together alot better than GR, the mission editor is real easy to use, and it helps if 3/4 of the dev team actually SERVED in the military...theyve been there, they know how to capture the tension of combat. so what if it was an eastern bloc military dont get me wrong i like GR too. the graphics are better, but the team AI (even the patched version) sUx0rZ. the missions werent that hot either... cool premise just poor execution. the only thing that keeps it in my library is multiplayer. its fun doing the coop missions with friends who know what the hell theyre doing instead of some lamebrained AI. opf is definitely better... ive made a ton of new missions, from night insertions in a blackhawk, to a Red Dawn-ish soviet invasion complete with choppers, planes and amphibs. my 2 cents [ 03-24-2002, 17:39: Message edited by: Grayfox ]

Hunted Posted March 25, 2002 Author Report Posted March 25, 2002 Come on your ex-mil's, Silk get in here, Gallion i know you did some service, i think sc played at least one of them i really wanna know if i should shell out my gaming dollar?!
Vanethian Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 I prefer OP. F. but GR is very good too. IMO i must say that they are two different games with different pros and goals.
Guest Grayfox Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 true. GR is geared towards the special operations aspect of the military, and OPF is geared more towards the normal infantry ground pounding type. seeing as how i was just a ground pounder and not a snake eater, i tend to lean towards the normal (if there is such a thing as normal)... to put it simply, OPF is the most realistic one to date (if you remove the fact that an average joe can pilot a tank or helicopter)... you can take that from someone whos had a VERY hostile person shoot at him with an ak 47 in a foreign country... and lived [ 03-25-2002, 12:34: Message edited by: Grayfox ]
ShoHashi Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 I have both Ghost Recon and OP:F, JJ, and they both are different types of games. I liked OP:F because it takes place in the 80's and was sorta deja vu to me because that's when I was in the Corps. Ghost Recon is also good, especially multiplayer-wise. If I had to pick between the two, I would go with Ghost Recon. However..just get them both!
Commander Elio Jason Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 yeah i agree with ShoHashi. Ghost Recon is definetely a good game and 6 hours can pass while your playing without realizing it. as for OP:F i don't have it. BTW tell the guys at PC Gamer which one they think is better. they'll say GR. trust me. GR has some cool weapons like the OICW. it even comes with a grenade launcher. Grayfox, try Ghost Recon and you'll probably end up changing your mind . there's a good chance though that you'll change your mind and if you have a good system you can see the excellent effects. while i was playing GR, my team was launching grenades at the enmy while our other riflemen came up to shoot at them. the sounds seemed so realistic to me as we shot the enemies. it seemed like i was at war. overall while i have no idea what OP:F is like i would definetely recommend GR for the types who like specialized forces and stuff like going through cities and using stealth to your advantage. remember "No man is left behind."
Eclipse Posted March 26, 2002 Report Posted March 26, 2002 Well I've just finished GR, and beat OFP sometime before Christmas. The short summaries: Ghost Recon is Rogue Spear outside. Operation Flashpoint is a sim based on how a war would probably have been fought in the 80's The long summaries: GR covers more of "modern" combat, small squads of soldiers carrying out short missions. This in't bad, but in the course of the campaign I found that I would heavily rely on manual control of squads to get the job done. In fact it wasn't odd for my sniper to come through a mission with 20+ kills. The AI seems pretty stupid at times, I would peg a soldier and the rest would drop for about two seconds, after that they would stand up like there was no danger. I only saw an AI use grenades or AT rockets 2x in the entire campaign and the AT soldier seemed almost scripted. A major problem I had was the portral of armor. I think the tanks must have pretty weak motors for rotating their turrets as well as for actual movements. These units were very slow in target acquisition and movement in my opinion this took away from their believability. I found the weapon combinations and sqad member experaince quite intersting. Another nice adition was the damage model, It was nice to see that getting hit actually affected the troops. eg. leaders took linger to plan a course, stealth and accuracy drops if wounded, etc. The weapons themselves didn't seem too different, the OICW and M16 were nearly identical save for the grenade launchers and the accuracy speed. Sniper rifles were ok, but the two I used in the course of the missions only seemed to vary in how much ammo they had per clip. Of course the M249 acted as you would expect a large machine gun would. Graphically the game is better than Operation Flashpoint but it does not try to accomplish the scope OFP has. I've not been able to play MP with it, but if it continues the tradition of the RS games it should really shine. Overall for SP it's fairly medeocre, just another RS and with MP I can't answer ATM. Operation Flashpoint is a fairly different game. Instead of focusing you in a smalll limited map, they expand it to cover an island. This gives the gameplay a much greater range of options than with GR. Combat usually takes place and a longer range than GR and involves quite a few more troops, and armor is depicted more closly to "real world." Here again there doesn;t seem to be too horribly much in weapon variety but they all act about how you would expect them to. The scope is expanded by the ability to command vehicles as well as having a much better command interface than GR. As for gameplay it gets quite chaotic at times with all the troops and vehicles thrown into the mix. AI works much better than in GR and seems to competantly act for the most part, though there are times you wonder what it was doing. A major differance is the atmosphere, in OFP There is just something about a line of troops back by armor cresting a hill that just isn't matched in GR. Neither is the sense of tension and suspense in many of OPF's missions captured as well in GR. Graphically it isn't quite as good but the graphics aren't too terribly aweful. MP could be fun if there were enough people in the server, but I'm not sure how well this has turned out. Overall the SP campaign is much better than GR, and I can't compare the MP ATM. Both are good games, but if you are looking primarily at SP, get OPF. Other than that Thats about all I can say about them.

With a high-end system you can check out some pretty cool looing battles in OFP. (ya know, tanks, planes, mines, corpses ect.) In fact you can even be the pilot, driver, gunner, ect of the numerous vehicles. (this is the reason why I chose ofp instead of GR) quote: overall while i have no idea what OP:F is like i would definetely recommend GR for the types who like specialized forces and stuff like going through cities and using stealth to your advantage Ah yes, OFP sucks when it comes to running around indoors id call OFP the perfect war game if you could run around indoors without getting that 'awkward' feeling. (you people who have ofp should know what im talking about) However outdoors- GR is no match for ofp.. Nothing like driving half way across everon in a jeep and running into a forest in a mp game. Stealth is also needed too if you plan on beating the game at night being a black op crawling is the next best thing to being invisible but all in all if I wanted to play a rainbow 6 type game id play GR. If I wanted an all out WAR id play ofp. *Speaking of mission editing can any ofp players here send me a simple example of a AI group ejecting out of a heli? I can never seem to get that to work. Even when I use the scripts from OFP editing center..
