Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 You forgot to add the link They start out by saying that its the most advanced game since elite destined to be an "instant classic"... then spend the next several paragraphs explaining EVERYTHING that BCM already does, more than that BC300ad did all this years ago. In fact it has only about 1/2 to 2/3 the content of BCM. I just dont understand what the deal is with these blind biased idiotic websites. Just taking one look at XP1, wich will be out about the same time or before Frelancer finally ships, There is simply no contest. What a bunch of crap. It really irks me that these guys are getting tons of credit for something that has already been done Twice, with more content, by someone else. Yet they are being treated like this game is some astinishing new advancement to the space sim. It doesnt even have planetry missions... [ 04-22-2002, 11:26: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Supreme Cmdr Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 Simple explanation. That preview (which has NOTHING new) was done by Richie Shoemaker. Yes, the same Richie Shoemaker from PC ZONE UK whose reviews/previews, CVG also carries. Draw your own conclusions. quote: It really irks me that these guys are getting tons of credit for something that has already been done Twice, with more content, by someone else. Yet they are being treated like this game is some astinishing new advancement to the space sim. Which is why we're going to bury it at retail. Have faith my old friend. Have faith. We've done it before (Starlancer), we can and will do it again. E3 will be here soon (May 21 - 24) [ 04-21-2002, 17:25: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Soback Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 BC series are a whole different space genre in itself. There is just no comparing it to Privateer, Elite, Terminus, Independence war I/II ect.... So, the point is --> don't get pissed off, and don't even try to weight one against the other. I will buy Freelancer for sure, just like I bought Independence war I/II, Terminus, Privateer, Freespace.... The thing is, sometimes you will feel like being the center of attention of the game, ploping yourself into that single pilot fighter and taking on that huge carrier with 20 fighters just like yours and suceed in destroying those fighters and carrier, that of course would be laughable in reality but sometimes you just need to feel BIG in a game. It will of course get repetitious after a while and a realization of "nothing can touch you" will set in. So then, when you feel like plunging yourself into a huge dynamic universe where there's consequences of bitint off more than you can chew, you will pop in BC (be it BCM or XP1/2) and play for a couple of hours. My point is, you need something like Freelancer, and Independence War out there to balance out the seriousness of BC. So when you feel like flexing your mind you play BC, when you feel like blasting everything you see you play other stuff, sounds fair enough. PS, as for that poor review, it doesn't sound like a personal attack, it is a personal attack. I mean what does YOUR (Dereks') "rebelion" against the publisher has to do with the game, and those 2 last paragraphs about you shouldn't even BE in the review, it's about the GAME for crying out loud, not your personal life or opinions.
Soback Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 Here's a quote I found at Gamespy reviewing one of the space genre games. "You'll spend the majority of your time shooting throngs of enemy ships until you get so used to it you just want to stop playing. - Giancarlo Varanini " This about sums up the point I was trying to make in the previous post.
Supreme Cmdr Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 Excellent post Soback. Excellent post indeed OK, just for that, here is a sneak peak of something I've had under wraps for awhile. Like I said, they'll never see it coming. ANY and ALL questions about this box shot CAN and WILL be ignored until E3 (May 21 - 24). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED OK, You've all seen it now - so I've removed it. [ 04-23-2002, 09:17: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]

Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 soback, the difference here is freelancer is very similar to the Bc series. In fact its a clear attemt to imitate this game to a large degree. Where they (the previewers) go completely off the deepend is making teh claim its the fist time any of this has been done. Starlancer and the entire host of space sim games prior are all linear mission shooters. Not A free form universe Space opera like BCM. Freelancer is the first clear attempt to try a similar approach. I am not mad at freelancer, microsoft or any other game. I am mad at the Media for making absurd biased and ignorant claims. Guest Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 This is similar to that announcement some Japanese scientists made a few days ago... that drinking BEER reduced the risk of cancer by 50% on lab rats and quite likely, humans. They didnt mention they were being sponsored by Kirin Beer Co.

It's a single seater fighter game, no landing on planets (granted, you can visit planetary bases, much like in Privateer) no mining planets (you can mine asteroids just like in Terminus) no control of a huge 100+ crewmember ship, no freeform universe (the universe will be Independence war II *dynamic*), what exactly in that game is comparable to BCM?
Soback Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 Oh yeah, as for the part that says about the media advertising that it's the first time something like this is being atempted then yes, it's a ridiculous claim but what are you going to do? It's a crutch for them, you hear it about every game. Not like they are going to say, "This game *Rober Baron* (example) is just like Railroad Tycoon II only with more trains and better graphics." ofcourse not. They are going to dazzle you with the *amazing new AI*, somehow better trains, and dynamic representation of earth and everchanging economy and throw in that phrase that all this has never been atempted before. That's just smart marketing. It's how things are done, because if you say even a word of how it's like BCM or any of the game that is not more than a year or 2 old, it's free advertising for the competition.
Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 No, they say its a "free form" universe. You can fly around wherever you want by taking jumpgates. Besides if what you way is true, then it makes my case even more. AS they are saying its the cats meow for literally NO REAON. Again, please note I AM TALKING ABOUT THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE GAME. Not the game itself. [edit] Whatever... i give up.... its clear you mean to take apart my point or disagree with me regardless of what i say. [ 04-22-2002, 02:24: Message edited by: Hellbinder ]
Sean Mudge Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 I must say SC, you have certainly peaked my interest with that box shot. Looking forward to future info.. Cheers
