Guest Remo Williams Posted June 14, 2002 Report Posted June 14, 2002 With over 1200 sun type stars in our own back yard so to speak. It won't be long before they find another earth type planet. Then will just have to figure out how to get there.

Very interesting to say the least. They raised a few issues that I had never considered before. It could be quite awhile before we make it to even the closest stars, if ever. All have a possibility of containing a solar system like ours. This Jupiter like planet, is in a system out-side the 25 mark. -Just some useless information;)

I was particularly interested in the light sail concept (i had seen it mentioned in discovery, but never went into detail).. and the "vacuum energy" concept. Wow wow wow. Wasn't it in "2063: The Final Odyssey" that Clarke mentioned Vacuum Energy? If memory serves me right he said something to the likes of humanity trying to find out wtf the tycho monolith had transmitted in 2001 and what would the answer be... and something about them discovering another civilization in another star that had "blown up" the solar system because, they believed, they had used vacuum energy and it got out of control. Later in the book it was said that the aliens that made the monolith had blown the system up instead of letting "dangerous" species loose in the universe, which was exactly what they were gonna do to our solar system hehee. man im such a geek. help!

Science seems to think more and more that black-holes , or singularities could not obey normal physics. Especially in what we call event horizon, which is less or more a breach thru normal spacetime, or, in another way, a breach into our dimension. All these physical distortions are caused by excessive gravity, as we theorize. In the future we all believe we will be able to control gravity, for devices such as artificial gravity and inertial dampeners. Some also think we will also be able to repel the effects of excessive gravity. Now, could there be a way to go faster than the speed of light, while at the same time, going slower than the speed of light? Using normal physics, it's impossible. Now here's my theory. What if we were able to use a small black hole's singularity effect to isolate a ship from reality? What i mean is, create 2 layers of gravity containment field, and create a small, and unstable black hole in the middle. Small, but enough to create a singularity. Unstable, because accidents could be the doom of a planet, or worse. This would create a layer of singularity between the ship and the reality. Normal physics would occure of both sides, but the singularity field would separate us, thus permitting us to virtually breach the light speed limit. Now, you will tell me, we can't propel the ship because we are separated from the normal universe in some way, but by creating in fact 2 black hole, one bigger than the other, and using a technique similar to the one used by worms (let the back be attracted by the front, reducing the distance, and then expanding again, creating a slight push), we can more, then, at midway, do the same, but invert to slow down. It's a little complicated, and quite... farfetch, but i believe it has enough basis with science to be... believable. Is that geek enough

Any way I was digging around and I liked the thoughts on innovation and how the copy machine didn't come about because we were trying to improve carbon paper. This idea fuels the notion that research into area's that have a bad label or lack practicality can often be rewarding as hell.
