Põdi Posted July 2, 2002 Report Posted July 2, 2002 That isn't a million miles away from me, in fact. Very sad.
GREG MILLER Posted July 2, 2002 Report Posted July 2, 2002 Not hard to believe when you have the human condition involved. Mistakes do happen, and some of those mistakes, can and will, kill you and/or others nearby. I would like to know why the Air Traffic Controllers didn't have both planes swing opposite directions to increase their horizontal distance from each other? Kevin Trotter Posted July 2, 2002 Report Posted July 2, 2002 Just awful. Could have been worse tho. At least they caugfht those two drunks in Florida before they could up the body count.

Guest Grayfox Posted July 2, 2002 Report Posted July 2, 2002 ya but what about this? quote:But contradicting the initial Swiss account, the German government agency for air accident investigations told The Associated Press that the Russian pilot received a first warning to correct altitude only about 50 seconds before the crash. ] on one side the swiss say they warned the russian pilot 3 times... wth??? commo breakdown? pilot drunk? what??? then on the other side you have the german agency saying the air traffic control tower warned the russian jet only once and that it was 50 sec before the planes collided. when they find the "black box" from both planes, that should make it a bit clearer as to who was at fault. tis a shame nonetheless
Soback Posted July 2, 2002 Report Posted July 2, 2002 Ok, let me clear up a few things. First. In the last preceeding months the conrol agency has reduced the vertical separation provided between planes, and deemed it safe. (meaning, they reduced the vertical clearance between 2 planes traveling in opposite directions) Second, the Russian plane complied on the second direction given by the controler. The Air Trafic Controllers radar updates every 6 seconds, that means that the first time they told them to change altitude, they saw no change on their radar, about 6 to 12 seconds later they told them second time, and saw the airplanes altitude changing on the radar (believe it or not, you don't just push on the yoke as hard as you can when you are told to change altitude, especially when you got people on board), and the third time the controler was freaking out because he saw the Swiss air plane changing altitude too, and told the Russian plane to change altitude the for the third time hoping that he would put a plane into a steeper dive. And Third, consider the closing rates. At 36,000 feet you will be traveling roughly 500 kts, or about 600MPH, that's 1200 MPH closing rates, and PLUS picking up speed in a dive, those 50 seconds translate into literally nothing when you are talking between ATC and trying to change the attitude of a plane that weights 400,000 pounds or more, it's just not enough time, planes don't change their flight path that fast, nor do people comply or think that fast.

I said Horizontal, or in your case, left to right. The controller had the plane descend vertically, or in your case up and down. [ 07-03-2002, 12:30 PM: Message edited by: Greg Miller ]
