Heh, I remember toying with this a long time ago.. but I gave up, because I couldn't find any DOS disk images that would actually run my games. Even now, the only thing I can spot is a 5 meg "FreeDos" image.. not exactly Crusader: No Remorse material

i remember making DOS bootdisk for all sorts of games on my old Packard Bell 486 DX2 (33mhz).. had a whole 4megs of RAM and Win3.11 for Workgroups, not to forget the 250meg HD... Tie Fighter, X-Com, all had to have a DOS bootdisk... always had to enale EMS memory and shell out lots of stacks. And i also remember it cost my dad for X-mas a whopping $94 for a 4-meg upgrade in RAM.. the good old days (im only turning 21 in Oct)

lol... 21??? what was that one they had in wargames??? anyone remember? the one that matthew broderick was using... i remember i seen the specs for it and i couldnt stop laughing.

Already know about it, but toying with it means I have to actually EXIT Windows, which automatically cause 60% of the people on my oversized ICQ list to freak out and start wondering where the hell I went

Anything that would allow me to multitask normally in Windows while it's running would be asskicking++ in my opinion.. one thing I'd murder for is a 2k/XP-based emulator that can run every single popular DOS game ever created flawlessly. I'd love to play Crusader: No Remorse or Terra Nova again without having to toy with boot disks or my dual-boot setup.. eh, something like that probably won't appear though.

Well, even with modern games, you have no business running ANY app in the background - most especially ICQ.

If you really want to play your older games, booting from a DOS disk (a 10 second no brainer) shouldn't be such a big deal. You're obviously not so caught up about it or you wouldn't consider dropping out of win2k/xp to be a bother. heh

If you put your freaky ICQ groupies above your need to play your DOS games, well then.

Heh, actually, I haven't noticed ANY performance difference whatsoever no matter what I have running in the background or not whenever I play a game.. everything runs fine. The only exception being virus scanners, of course. ICQ, specifically, runs 24/7 and doesn't degrade my performance at all. I don't notice any difference if I close it.

True, getting a boot disk rig isn't something really hard to set up, but I still find it quite a hassle to have to juggle ancient, now totally unsupported soundcard, mouse and other drivers in order to get a game running properly. An emulated environment capable of handling those problems while XP is running would kick ass IMHO

And never mind the poor souls who run NTFS..
