I don't see why everyone dislikes this game*hell its not even out!*, I find it kinda fun and humourous, plus exciting.. are you guys just jelous that the grapihcs are a bit better than those in BCM? *for now anyway*

Granted.. the demo is cheesy but hey! thats the demo for you.. DO NOT diss a game or comment on a game just because of the demo, prime reason why I don't judge a game untill I've played through it. *one reason why it pisses me off when people post reviews where they say they only played one or two missions where infact they havn't seen not even the tip of the iceberg*

There are things Freelancer has that BCM doesn't

and there are Diffinently things BCM has that Freelancer doesn't.

So its really a double edged sword there.

How about this

When I get the game I'll play through the entire game and post my own review here on this board and on the gamespot board =)

The whole point of playing a demo is to help one decide if the game is worth buying. The only reason why I got games like Deus Ex and Mafia was because I was impressed by the demos. The full games impressed me even more. If a demo is trash, it is more likely that the full game will suck even more, because it has ten times the trash of the demo. It is uncommon for a good game to have a demo that puts people off buying it.

I haven't played the Freelancer demo yet, but I will not touch Freelancer with a ten metre pole if the demo disappoints me, despite waiting years for its release.

Right on! That's EXACTLY what I think about demos.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I played the demo for a good 6 hours and had a lot of fun with it. A lot of that time was spent exploring.

You can find so much hidden stuff by exploring space: pirate bases, abandoned research facilities, derelict ships containing valuable equipment, a secret jumpgate in an old mine field, all kinds of cool anamolies and nebula etc. Many of these things tie in with rumours you here in the bar (and the full game has a full news system). For example I heard about a navy patrol that went missing on a mission to the Badlands - I went to the badlands, which is probably the most ominous and creepy place I've ever seen in a space game and actually found the derelicts of that lost patrol... It was eerie. And this is all in only one system, the full game has about 50!

Freelancer does the whole exploration thing better than any other game I've seen, period.

It does have some problems though, the generated missions for example are even more repetitive than those found in Privateer and Frontier. Kill this group and assassinate this guy are about all you get. You can still do trading, pirating and escorting/patrolling (none of these things require generated missions to do) which I've not put any time into yet. But I've been having fun anyway.

Thats not weird. FL is looking like BC games - you either like it or you don't. Some people so far like FL and others are disppointed because they expected so much more. I think that its the high expectations and overhype that is causing this attitude I think.

Really? Thats interesting to know. How come?

I actually meant to say any other "space" game. Sorry about that.

So far in Freelancer when I go exploring I always seem to find something that makes me think, "woah, that's cool". It's rewarding to go out into the depths of space and find a secret research facility or some long lost alien ruins - if you've played Morrowind then it is the same kind of deal.

I decided to take a diversion away from the trade-lanes south of Pittsburg and after a bit of travelling to my surprise came across this huge minefield, hundreds of very dangerous mines (which I almost cruised straight in to ) - in the center of the minefield I could see a natural jump gate to an Unknown destination. Now I don't yet have the equipment to get through that minefield, but I can't wait to find out where that jump gate leads to and what other secrets can be found in there. What could be beyond that jump gate that requires so many mines to keep me away? That's a cool feeling.

When I found the Badlands I was creeped out, that place is eerie. It has this foreboding atmosphere that makes me think I really should not be there. Curiousity got the better of me and I pressed further in... A little way in four red names appeared on my contact list, lasers flashed across my screen, in two seconds my shields were gone. In panic I hit the cruise engines and just kept going, I didn't have time to look at my nav map and find a route to safety. Just when I thought I was safe I met another four ships, I died. I wonder what is in that place? When I get a better ship I will go back there and find out what's going on.

These are things you would never find if you didn't go and do some exploring, seems the majority of people who have played the demo don't even know that these places exists. I guess I just haven't found any other space sims that make exploration feel that rewarding.

ah, now I get it. That sounds cool. I never did get that far into the demo because I'd rather wait for the full game.

I suppose I made a good decision then by not charting the second galaxy in BCG - but instead, leaving it up to the players to discover the areas and chart it out for themselves?

So far I like it, but then I loved both the privateer games. The only real problem I have is not being able to use a joystick. I hope they change that for the final release, or else my piloting skills will be severely hindered.

Freelancer, from what I've seen, concentrats*SP* on exploration.. which means.. SC you better add more systems to BCM hehe j/k

FL also had a co-op mode! *on the gamespot website its been stated!* WEE! I can't wait to find some of my friends... or even parshaps some peeps here who might get it and form a group of merc's,pirates, or law enforcement and go out on the job knowing we all get a peice of the bounty

Granted what I like most in a game is the exploration, fighting is ok as long as its amazing *Example, when I first bought BCM it was my FIRST space game I bought.. I was very impressed after that I bought Starlancer which impressed me more* So.. its SC who I have to thank for getting me into Space Type games

btw

Your wrong about some demos

Some demos are out to the public for TESTING reasons.. one of those demos was Empire Earth you bought/download the demo and you where officaly a beta tester.

btw SC when you going to add cool looking fighters like those in FL to BCM hehe

Ok, the Freelancer demo just got cool points in my book....

I FLEW INTO A STAR!!!

Yep, that's right. I got bored and thought, hmm..can I fly to the sun? So I targeted the sun and activated my cruise engines. I got to about 10k away (not sure what kinda K...sure wasn't kilometers..) and my onboard computer said, "Warning, entering sun corona!" and my engines tried to quit working and there was all this flaming stuff everywhere and then I blew up...the mere fact that they allow you to do this is waaay cool.

Also, you are not in any way, shape, form or fashion confined to the trade lanes. If you wanna fly from one side of the system to the other on just cruise engines, you can! Just be sure to dodge all the planets and stations and such

Crashing into a planet I found out the hard way, I was fighting a group of pirates that droped in on me and I 'accidently' got to close to the planet I was near... oops!

Yea I can't wait! FL will be out on tuesday of next week

All I can say is that it's fun exploring the universe and the ships are cool.

I wish the AI was a bit stronger for the oponents, as it gets to easy to take them down. Like I was able to take down 7 other Junkers solo, and what I had read from reviews is that this would almost be impossble. I highly doubt that I have amazing combat skills, so that part is a let down. They are too predictable. BTW I do like the mouse combat, as you can be really acurate and fast. A joystick would probably slow down the combat alot in this game.

Anyways, I'm not going to judge it yet. I dunno if I'm going to buy it, but so far, it's been really fun.

But you can't even compare Freelancer to the BC series, as it doesn't even come close to offering it up. I think they just did a real good job at making it easy for anyone who refuses to read a manual to be able to play. The masses could suck this up because it doesn't take any time at all to learn how to play.

I was able to get a Marketing Beta copy, that basically has the full game, along with a few bugs in the sound system. At first I was very disappointed, I had envisioned being able to explore the planets along with space and I found that the AI was way TOO easy to beat, but believe me, once you get out to other areas and start taking on higher level missions. These guys get TOUGH!!!. Once I got over the initial let down of the overhyped aspects of the game, I found a game that is fun to play and somewhat addicting, so sit back go out and explore and make sure you carry plenty shield batteries.

Yes, I started to see this as I got to the end. It does start to get really tough.

So We'll see, I may end up picking up this title. Although, I'd wait for a few more reviews and other's opinions before i do so. I may just save the cash for BCG, but I think I need something to carry me over until then.

We'll see.

Cheers!

I agree, finally a space-sim that even my older brother can play. I like the cooperative aspect over the internet also. This would make a good XBox also. I am waiting for BCMG and X2-The Threat.

I think I am going to wait on buying Freelancer till later this year when I buy it for my brother for Christmas. Jeez, I also need to buy him Halo 2.

I gave my nephew a new $2 box of Starlancer for Christmas, so I will buy my nephew Freelancer.

Dave will get Halo 2 for the XBox.

So, I am looking forward to BCMG and X2. I did have a funny feeling looking at the demo of Freelancer, no multiplayer in the demo, reminded me of the BCM menu. Ok, Ok, not a fair comparison, but never-the-less, that is what I thought of.

So, thumbs up for Freelancer, for what it is, but, 6 years in development????? It doesn't even come close to BCM.

Well, to be fair, they set out to create a mass market title and thats what they ended up with.

I thought Chris Roberts started out with the same or similiar vision you had SC. I mean, look at Privateer, Freelancer from what I have heard does not have many of the free-form universe features Privateer had.

Once Microsoft bought DA, DA was living in comfort but Chris was then being 'dictated' to by Microsoft, he lacked focus also with getting into movies(I bought it), after that he just left and Freelancer was left to his brother.

A big corporate publisher and somewhat of a lack of focus is what relagated to a mass-market title.

I do think FL will really take off if they port it(properly) to the XBox, and possibly ask you for some advice.;-)

I think with XBox Live, FL will truely find a home in the mass-market.

FL will be out tomorrow!

and I'll post my own review of the game after I defeat...

here's how I review a game

if it takes me only one day to defeat it *one school day* then it wasn't worth my money *IE Generals only took me one full day to defeat one campain, took me 3 days to defeat the game*

If it takes me a week to defeat a game then it was well worth my time and money

Yeah, I hate that you can't roll or strafe vertically. As far as moving in turret view, kill the engines hit the booster and just slide in a straight line, this presents a moving target somewhat and you can still fire on the enemies, although being able to control direction would greatly help. I still miss a joystick

For those that care, Lancer's Reactor forums have info on where to get hacks that allow you to fly all the ships in the demo as well as raise the LVL 2 req to 1 mil so you can play longer, in case you aren't buying it tomorrow.

I've had the Marketing Beta for almost a month and managed to play the game through Mission 10, where some nasty bugs prevent you from advancing. The verdict - it's good and I'll definately buy it for the multiplayer... but it's not remotely the Elite successor it was supposed to be. Not even close.

My biggest beef is the fact that the universe is flat - and looks flat - and feels flat. With a few rare exceptions, like Eve Online, most developers don't seem to realize that space is 3-dimensional. You can't even roll your ship in FS - for me that really damages the immersiveness (Isn't there a law about that?). I feel like I'm playing Combat Flight Simulator 3 with space as terrain. Plus, all the missions really just degrade into "Fly here - destroy some stuff - get paid." It's really no more complex than Dungeon Siege. What I do appreciate are details like 3D-dimensional stars and honest-to-god depth in debris/asteroid fields (Although it bugs me that they're all about the same size). True 3D stars are at the top of my wishlist for BCG/BCO - and one of the things I love most about IWar2.

My final Freelancer score? 8/10

It's worth playing but go in expecting a GAME like Freespace/WingCommander - not a simulation like BC/Elite. Great multiplayer experience.
