Guest Posted September 20, 2003 Report Posted September 20, 2003 Win2kPro: So there I was on friday playing SWG 'n stuff... exited game, turned off pc, went to eat.. came back, turned the PC back on, opened my usual SWG website that i use for reference for in-game stuff, open my e-mail, didnt get any (probably because i had checked it 2 hours ago). Was about to click on the SWG icon again when I noticed an icon in my desktop.. Dark Age of Camelot. A game i dont play anymore. So I said to meself, welp, that sucker's nearly 2 gigs. so I go to windows add/remove programs, uninstall the expansion of the game first, then DAOC classic.. all fine and dandy. 2 gigs free in my HDD, more swap file space! Restart system (always do it after uninstall, guess its a habit from win98 ).. when desktop came back on, my internet connection was GONE. I suddenly felt like a macintosh user. WTF happened? Guessing the game uninstall had screwed something (dang im so smart from figuring that one out..sigh), I uninstall my network adapter, restart pc, reinstall it.. nothing. Used my DSL install CD... nothing. Went Win2K safe mode and restarted pc with last known good config ('Original Configuration')... nothing. Called ISP support, they ran a series of tests (the usual dos ping and ipconfig stuff).. apparently my pc is all the sudden not getting an IP address. It cant even talk to the DSL modem. They said something about a possible winsock screwup or registry fix they did not support. Unfortunately I lost my win2K cd (getting a friend's on monday) so i cant do a system file check (sfc /scannow). 3 other computers are hooked to my DSL and connect perfectly so its my PC. Im out of ideas on how to fix this. Downloading win2kpro SP4 patch from MS and ill install it on my pc, who knows it might fix something or replace whatever file got fugged. If it doesnt work, my last option will be to put a winxp cd and install it as a dual boot so i can at least play some in the weekend. Unless any of you fellas here have any suggestions.

Unless any of you fellas here have any suggestions. Before installing any thing on your computer do you scandisk and defrag the hard drive more so the scandisk. I found from experience that if you don't do this on regular bases, especially the scandisk, files on the hard drive can get crosslinked and more which means a fresh install of the OS is the best course of action.
Guest Posted September 20, 2003 Report Posted September 20, 2003 Sounds to me like you somehow signed in as a different user. When that happens it gets real bizarre, because all of a sudden everything is different, when in fact you somehow made the change by signing in as a different user on the computer. It will give you a whole other desktop, whole other set of icons etc, it will also revert to whatever the network settings for that user were. Check that out, maybe that is your problem. Guest Posted September 21, 2003 Report Posted September 21, 2003 Intel inside, Idiot Outside. $#@@$@ i cant believe i backed up and reformatted all my junk, still didnt work, was forced to put XP on this machine till i get 2k back on monday... then i had to buy a new network card to eliminate the hwr possibility... still didnt work In anger and frustration I kicked the snot out of my ethernet hub, sending it flying across the room (and unplugging the power cable as it gained the wall on the other end of the room). Satisfied, yet feeling like kicking it again (decided against it since these wussy cardboard walls ye gringos make are actually expensive to patch up), I plug it back and was going to try and see if it was the MBD PCI slot that had gone the way of the dodo.. plug the ethernet connectors, the power, go to my room, reached for the START button.. and im staring at a working internet connection. All i had to do was powercycle the fuggin hub! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I did a Resnig. Flame me. please.

I told my DSL company that I had my own modem, so I would not need thier free one, so I hook mine up, and lookey there, the damn thing doesn't work on their system. I can't change the settings and even if I could, it wouldn't matter, because it only works with Fujitsu DSLAM systems, which Centurytel does not use. So, now I have to wait and call on Monday and ask them very nicely to send me the damn modem that I said I wouldn't need. So, don't feel too bad, ARGH!!! So I get to go another week without DSL because I had my OWN modem.... DUH!!!

Not because it will work but because if anything happens to the thing they will replace it for free. My dsl company charges me the exact same monthly rate if i have my own modem or use theirs, and they ask for a 100 when you first sign up as deposit for the modem, when you leave, you get your deposit back. and so far, being in florida, ive had to replace the dsl modem 4 times in 2 years, all 4 of them during stormy season. On a lighter note, my pc is rather fast now after the reformat. So i guess something good came out of it
