Last night, while I was playing UC and engaged in a large fleet battle agaist the gammulan menace (sorry, couldn't help myself ) my video card decided "I don't like you" and died on me

I was wondering why everything in the game suddenly turned ugly, graphic wise. My game didn't quit, although my video card did read a temp of over 115c (The threshold is 120c) UC doesn't take that much graphic space so my only conclusion is that there was so much going on on my screen that the card couldn't keep up (which I find hard to believe, since I've engaged in battles with over 50+ ships and never had a problem)

But, saddly, I've had to mark my card with the RIP sign (it's a Geforce 6800 GT Overclocked, 256 mb ram) only had it for 5 months =

Anyone got a suggestion on what I should get of equal or better?

And, naturally, hopefully I posted this in the right area

5 months? try contanting the manufacturer or store for any type of warranty? 5 months and burnout sucks.

just dont mention the oc'ing part

hehehe

the card came overclocked, but it said it's a "lifetime" warranty, but when I phoned them for support they asked for the type of card and I told them (excluding the OC) and they said that since the card is an overclocking type, it's automatically void of the warranty

Is that right? Or do I sense a legal battle

ATI is always a good choice.

BTW did you make sure the cooling fan on the video card is working?

no kalsh, if they sold it to you overclocked it does not void any warranty.

Gateway computers tried to pull that BS in 99..they shipped PC's with overclocked cards so they seemed to perform better in games and stuff.

It backfired when the cards of almost every single unit sold burned out in a couple of months. I was in tech support at the time and I remember replacing the same card to the same customer twice in a month.

If they tell you the card is void of warranty, ask to speak to a supervisor inmediately, dont even bother with the moron on the phone.

Afriad not, actually, I'm completely without a card now... was playing SW: Republic Commando and my card burned a whole in itself (don't ask me how)

I've got my sight's set on an X800 but .... well.... circumstances are kinda perventing me from going to the store right now

This really sounds like a fan failure to me. The warranty should still apply even if it is OC. In fact, they improve the cooling system so that they can offer you a lifetime warranty in the first place.

I contacted them again and this time I got a diffrerent person (got the same person the last 2 time's I called) after awhile they asked me to ship it to them so I did, they said if it seem's like a hard ware failure they'll send me a new one (mer, they better!)

For the time being, I'm using my old FX card (which is in good shape)

My father's friend told me to do that, which I am (funny how Nvidia didn't tell me...)

of course they didnt tell you that. they want every penny out of you they can get. as for getting a new one... i have a geforce 4 ti 4200 and i havent had any probs with it... had it for a few years now. as for ati, i personally dont like their customer service, so im pretty much boycotting them. heres a site that has some prices... something to gauge by anyway.
