Kalshion Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Not sure if this belongs in the Technology forum or not Pretty much, I need an opinion or something from some of you computer pros (ok, so I work on a computer 24/7, but this issue really has me stumped Was playing UC and was in the process of one hell of a battle between the Gammys and my fleet I ordered by carriers to launch there fighters, the game suddenly frooze... this has NEVER happened before, I've been in countless battles with well over 20-30 ships at any given moment and my computer's never frooze like this Well.. it stayed like that for a few minutes, then began to move.. and suddenly the system crashs... ok no problem, will head on over here to see if a new issue came up in the recent patch Unfortantly, I never got that far. I got as far as the bios information, and then suddenly my screen turned into little colorful squares, and flashing squares to At first, I thought it was my Nvidia card, so I went out to Best Buy, used the warrenty (cause my card was only 6 months old, and I had a 2 year warrenty) Inserted the sucker.. and booted up Hey! Wait a minute.. what the heck are all these colorful sqaures doing on a BRAND NEW card! So, after that little experience, I took the card out. Went into my fathers shed, and found the old Radeon 9800 Pro I used in my old alienware system *the one with the dead motherboard and fried hard drives* I insert that sucker, boot up... and everythings just fine... other than the 640x480 screen size (MY EYES!) Well, my father and I head back to best buy with BOTH cards.... now, I personally hate it when something is defective... but my father REALLY hates it when a $499 peice of hardware burns out on us! So, they tell us. "You can either exchange it for a similer one, or we can refund you" Talk about a bunch of bull, so instead. We leave... come back an hour later and this nice woman is at the register "Sure, just go back to where you found it and choose a different card. Doesn't matter if it's Nvidia or Radeon" Talk about a difference. So I go back and choose a Radeon X800 XL 256 MB And since then... no problems... UC works like a dream... if anything.. even better than a dream The card I had was an Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT OC (Overcloaked) I didn't find out till today that my nvidia had been FLASHED! 6 months ago I had bestbuy install that card for me, cause I didn't trust an OC card becuase I was afraid I'd burn it out. When I Told them I wanted to control the overclocking, they said they'd need to 'twick' the drivers With all honesty, I should've paid more attention. I never bothered to check my paper work or ask what they meant But, that's that. Apperently, it doesn't matter WHAT Nvidia card I put in. Weather it's a Geforce 3, or a Geforce 6 (GT) the motherboard refuse's to recognize it and cause's the screen to turn into these nice shades of color Anyone have any thoughts on this? As to why the motherboard is creating this affect and why it won't accept the Nvidia anymore?... not like I care since the first GT has two holes through it (one right where the fans are, another near the connectors)

Kind of sounds like the card might be running a bit too fast and or hot for the system. Could also be a power supply problem. Sometimes the power supply of your system does degrade over time. Not sure of the power requirement differnces between an Nvidia and ATI.

I would suspect that he would have more spontaneous rebooting and lockups if it was a failing psu.

A couple of years ago I switched to using ATI, I now have an ATI 9000 on one system, a 9200SE on another system and a 9550 on my main gaming machine with absolutly no problems. The best part is that I paid less than $100.00 for each one!
TARWMSRK Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Prehaps you fried something on your mainboard? I thought you just overheated and fried your videocard. You can see exactly what happend if you open event viewer (control panel > admin tools > event viewer) and double click on the system or application option. Scroll down to around the date that you had the crash and check out what kind of error you got. If it just says something like your computer crashed, then you probably have a cooling problem in your case. I say download some software to test your system so you can see whats broke. I would also monitor cpu, board, and card temp (the software I linked to can do that) just in case it really is a cooling problem.

Weather it's a Geforce 3, or a Geforce 6 (GT) the motherboard refuse's to recognize it and cause's the screen to turn into these nice shades of color that seems to be the prob there... something with nvidia that conflicts with your bios... or mobo. when you boot up your PC do you get a series of like 4 or 5 beeps in a row when using an nvidia card? im not talking the standard 1 or 2 boot up beeps either. usually a rapid succession of 4 or 5 beeps means your vid card is having issues with your mobo. what kind of asus board you have kal? i had an old cusl2 mobo that i had my old nvidia card (geforce ti 4200)hooked up to and had no probs. maybe its a monitor conflict as well? but i dont see why it would work with ati and not nvidia... same goes for the mobo... hmmm how well do you know your bios? if you know it well enough, id try first to reset the bios settings to default, or if that doesnt work reset your cmos altogether. although now that you have it working, i wouldnt mess with anything conspiracy!

I stopped counting around 15 how many after that I don't recall
Guest Grayfox Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 15 in a row? holy scheisse. and let me guess... the company you bought it from didnt give you any sort of mobo documentation or anything? i wouldnt be surprised if they didnt... would mean youd have to come back to them for help. i remember having the multiple beep prob once (told me my something was up with my vid card) the way i solved it was to remove it, then reinstall it back into the slot and make sure it was pushed all the way in and it worked fine after that, but that was a long time ago with an old pci vid card... personally i think best buy jacked you when they tweaked the drivers on the 6800. it was running fine for about 6 months? then poof? hmmm they must of accidentally screwed up the drivers to where no nvidia type card can be recognized. take em to court!

This is a good idea, the card may have worked it's way loose. also Kal try using this software EVEREST Home Edition It does a good job of identifying hardware in you machine and it is free.
