  1. Hehe, finally getting used to winter driving again up here in Wisconsin. Traditionally, we have really harsh winters. The last three years, though, winter has taken mercy on our poor state. This year, she's back with a vengeance. Monday, we got creamed with a foot of snow. Add 3" to that on Wednesday. More this weekend. We've already beaten last years snow fall totals. And the worst is yet to come. Every year (including the past three), we have a *massive* storm in January. That's when you can see the real Wisconsin drivers from the novices (think: Illinois drivers - worst in the country, IMO). Anyway, here's a couple of tips from my end: 1 - If you do get caught in a fish-tail, don't brake hard! Ease the breaks repeatedly, while counter-steering (turning the wheel in the opposite of the original turn direction). If you slam the breaks, your car's going to slide out of control, and don't be surprised if you end up looking in the opposite direction from which you want to go. 2 - Dammit, slow down! If you're going too fast, your tires will not get the friction they need on slippery surfaces. If you want to test this theory, fine - just make sure the whole road is all yours, and you have the phone number to AAA programmed into your cell phone. 3 - Don't ride someone's tail (tailgate). If they have to stop suddenly, bear in mind that their tires may be better than yours, meaning, they'll stop before you can, and your insurance company will be receiving a phone call. 4 - To reiterate Wold - sudden is bad...very bad. Your car cannot grab onto the road easily, and a sudden move will through any friction to the road that you may have, to waste. 5 - Regarding "black ice": It's there, believe me. Especially on roads that are not often traveled. The friction of passing cars usually keeps enough heat on the ground to not allow black ice to form. Without cars on the roads, well, the roads are much colder. Also beware of bridges. Cold air under bridges facilitates an even faster formation of black ice. Speaking of bridges, watch out for ones with high crosswinds. Those require some driver compensation even during warm times of year. Imagine what you'll have to do to deal with iced bridges. 6 - A rule around here used to be: keep your gas tank near full when it gets really cold, so the gas cannot freeze. Well, that's big BS. Promise. While it's uncommon, gas does freeze - even in a full tank. And if your tank *is* indeed full, guess what - it'll breach the tank. This normally happens in areas with high humidity in the summer which causes moisture to get into the tank. That water can freeze in the winter, making the tank even colder. So, if you're expecting a *very* cold day, 3/4 of a tank full should do the trick. 7 - The sun sucks. After fresh snow, guess what? The town becomes *really* bright with a lot of sun. Meaning, there's a lot of glare. Wear sun glasses or stay off the road. "I swear, I didn't see you, man." That's because you weren't wearing sun glasses. That's all I have for now. Come tomorrow, I may think of more.
  2. Yeah, Eclipse is right. You've got a low end processor, just a little bit of RAM, and only a 4mb vid accelerator. Your best bet would be to get more RAM and a faster vid chip. That may speed things up. Also, stay away from ACM. The first one will bring even the best machines to a crawl. A drunken one at that. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 3. No plans for tutorials are in the works, as of my latest knowledge. You'll just have to suffice with the handy manual. Don't worry, I'm sure that once the game is released someone from this community will put together a site the likes of GALCOM Academy.
  4. quote: Remember when this was a perfectly innocent thread? Hehe, remember when this was a perfectly innocent election? Now, you have people trying to throw out perfectly innocent absentee ballots because of a handwritten voter ID number (which was correct, btw) on the application. Now, you know Al Gore wants this case to be decided in favor of the plaintiff. Funny, but he was the one screaming that every vote should count, yet the only thing he says in this matter is "it's up to the courts to decide." You'd think that, if he really wanted every vote to count, he would condemn this ridiculous lawsuit. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 6. Uh, oh. Getting strong there again. In the interest of not heading down "that" road again (those of you in this discourse for the get-go, know what I mean), I'm shutting down this thread. Hopefully, someone can shut down the violence in the mid-east. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 8. One more thing: You know, it's sad that a lot of people choose to just ignore the violence in that region, or say that it doesn't exist, instead of actually looking at ways to change it. I mean, people are dying over there, and to make matters worse, people here try to say that all that death is not indicative of a violent culture. Here's some thoughts from someone who's only knowledge of the region comes from the media: If the Arabic culture is non-violent, explain the incredibly harsh penalties from crime such as petty-theft. While this may be indicative of a desire for law and order, it seems strange to me that it is acceptable for automatic weapons to be allowed on the streets (pretty much every Arabic nation allows the public to carry such weapons. Funny, but the exception to the rule is totalitarian Iraq). If the Arabic culture embraces those from other beliefs, explain the constant "under sentencing" in Arabic nations for crimes committed by its members against those from other cultures. If you are an Arab citizen and you committed murder against an American citizen, for example, you'll either get less than 3 years of prison time (during which the guards will even treat you as a hero), or you'll walk scott-free. If you murder another Arab, you'll be executed. To support my under-evolved theory, why is it that women still have little in the way of civil rights in most Arabic nations? That was a practice in many cultures, but most have evolved past this. Also, your statement of most Arabic people not being Islam followers, the only major people in the region (save Isreal) who aren't of Islamic beliefs are the Kurds (who are rather violent themselves). Many of which still share in some fundamental Islamic beliefs. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 9. Moved topic here. In regards to your question: You're doomed to purchase a 2.0 copy, but it's about as cheap as the patch upgrade, anyway. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 10. I feel no need to expand upon my previous arguments. However, I do want to ask, if it is the Jewish (Isreali) people who are more violent, how come the Arabic population of the United States are attacking American Jews, and not vice-versa? Seems to me that there's a deeper issue with the Arabic culture, even if you exclude all other facts. One other thing: if what you say is true, that the Arabic and Islamic culture is not prone to violence, and it's all Isreal's fault, how then do you explain the constant inter-culture battling in the region? Btw, "prone to violence" does not necessarily a naturally violent culture, it generally means that the culture has a history of violent conflict, which, as any history book will tell you, is true. ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid, Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet "You can only love or hate something you truly understand." 12. Hey there, Silence! Perhaps unfortunately for what you're looking for, the Insurgency acts as a team. However, the fleet I'd see as most suited to what you're looking for is Bishamon Fleet, headed by Jester. If you wish to join, visit both the Fleet FAQ and the Fleet Database to register. Btw, since when is the Insurgency not a suicide caste? ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet
  13. What Gallion said. Btw, the game looks great in 640/480, so you shouldn't have any probs on that spectrum. Grab a new v-card and go to town! ------------------ Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers ICV-Intrepid Spectre (Antis) Fleet Leader Spectre Fleet
