  1. Have to agree with Gallion on this one. I'd do everything Wold suggested, then toss that USB network adapter in the trash. Go to your local CompUSA/BestBuy or mom and pop and drop 25 bucks on a NetGear 10/100 pci based network card. You're better off than using a kludgey USB product that will never give you anything but problems. Plus, later on, you can get yourself a router and share your DSL with the rest of the house, but that's another day and another headache
  2. Hehe, this is funny (for me, not you I'm sure). Tac, you need to go into device manager and remove ALL cdroms. Shutdown. Crack open the case and remove the two drives. Check the jumpers. Make sure you aren't using a "cable select" cable. Set the DVD as master and the CD as slave. The DVD should be on the inside connector, and the CD on the end connector. This usually means your CD is atop your DVD in your case. Attach the IDE cable to your secondary IDE channel. Go into your BIOS at bootup and make sure your secondary IDE channel is set to auto-detect. Also, be sure and set your primary boot device to CD-Rom, second boot to Floppy and third to HD (remove the floppy if you only have two options). Place your win98 cd in the DVD drive (hopefully before your computer chooses the available boot) If your system asks if you want to boot from CD answer YES. Choose the option to boot to DOS with CD support. Place ANY cd in your cd-rom. You should see the both devices and be able to "dir" bot cd's. If this works, then the problem is with Win98 alone. If it doesn't then you have a hardware problem, either with one or both the drives; the secondary IDE channel; or a BIOS virus (highly unlikely... but you never know). If it's hardware, then you need to remove one device at a time starting with the CD. Try each device alone. Swap cables if necessary, also try setting up one as slave to the HD, BUT NEVER hook up more than ONE at a time. Once you've ruled out the drives and the cables then the problem lies squarely on the MOBO and you're basically hosed You can try ordering a new bios from the manufacturer; try flashing the bios with the same version or the next version (backup the current bios just in case); or buy a new MOBO. Hopefully you won't get to this point or it will be something as simple as a bad cable (the smallest of scratches exposing copper can cause so many odd things as can a failing power supply... hint, hint..) If you were able to stop at the win98 as the culprit WOOHOO... your job is easy. Backup up your important data (documents, favorites lists, email, address books, etc.) on a sepperate drive or partition or to cd or other suitable device. Once you've backed up everything (ICQ Db as well) put the Win98 cd back in the DVD drive boot to dos with cd support, navigate to your cd's win98 dir (usually d:win98) and type the following: format c: ONLY DO THIS IF YOU"VE BACKED UP... it's your fault if you lose ANYTHING. Continue to reinstall OS and software as necessary. Now, there is an easier way, if you're sure there is no virues, etc. I seem to remember that you can simply edit your registry by deleting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEEnum branch and rebooting. Win98 should take you through the process of reinstalling all your systems devices... be sure to backup your registry before trying this (user.dat & system.dat) Anyway, this is just the begining of the fun You and you alone are responsible for following these or any directions so swim at your own risk, there is NO lifegaurd on duty. Good luck P.S., should anyone wish to comment or suggest changes to this plan, feel free. It's late and I'm sure I forgot something ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858 [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 02-19-2001).]
  3. I cannot believe this thread is still alive. Blades, he's your lemming now. Convince the bugger to enlist in the DB and move this discussion to your forum please. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858
  4. Jeffrey, I understand the point you're trying to make. It is a novel one. Everyone wants better pings. However, you don't need to create a fleet. What you are thinking of is a local SERVER. One that would benefit a ping deficient person such as yourself. No new fleets are going to be created for some time. However, should you and your friends wish to play together as a group online, which is fine. Understand, though, as far as these boards are concerned, the only RECOGNIZED formations are within the already organized fleets. If you wish to be associated with an official group you must join a fleet. Now, as for servers... and this is just from memory... there was some discussion about Fleet Only servers. If DS decides to set one up in Malaysia, that's his decision alone. However, it will may be a Fleet only server and if you are not a member of a RECOGNIZED fleet you will not be able to join. That is, assuming, this is still the plan. The MP server issue has changed a few times and I'm not sure of the current plan so don't quote me. Yes, I know, lot's of rambling. So here's the short of it: 1. If you want to be part of an officially recognized group of players you MUST join an existing fleet. 2. If you want better pings get a faster connection on a closer server. 3. The previous two points are neither mutually inclusive nor exclusive. 4. I don't recognize you. You claim to be new. Before making grand requests become an active member of the community. It may lend more weight to your requests. Of course as an avid member of the community you'll soon find out just how seriously DS is likely to take your requests (TAC). Just some helpful hints and as always are just the opinion of man that has seen pigs fly. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858
  5. Holy crap Wold. I thought I was a serious tech head... Man, I wanted to do something like that with my old scsi cdburner... I'm just not good with the old soldering iron I was just trying to figure out how to partition my single HD to best suit my needs... I've tried many combinations but they all leave something lacking ... 4 cheat hard drives though would do the trick nicely ECHO... wow, long time no see post. How's the newborn doing (well not so newborn)? ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858
  6. Parias... Get yourself a new PSU NOW... Here's a couple of online locations: Plycon Outside Loop You should also be able to find a 300W or better from your local mom and pop computer shop. Did you build this system yourself? If not, your first step should be to get the reseller to fix it for you or replace the whole thing. Good luck
  7. Well, all, I'm sorta back from home system refitting. I'm sure that I'll only reinstall the OS's two more times (hehe. the perfect Unix, Linux, Win2K, Win98 multiboot system elludes me). Anyway, I've been around lurking and at times checking in on the forums. I've noticed one thing: Outside the Beta Test forums and the occaisional RP post things have been VERY quiet Then I noticed how EVERY other fleet forum had the light thingy shining bright. I became jealous. We Insurgents should have the Light shining ALL THE TIME. Without further verbal dribel...let the banter begin ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858 [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 02-05-2001).]
  8. Parias, from someone whos been building rigs for a LONG time: 300W PSU is the minimum. The orb is fine providing your not trying to overclock the cpu. GlobalWin just came out with a new HS+fan combo that rocks, but it JUST came out. Did you have to make any "modifications" to that orb? Anyway, get at least a 300W PSU or more if you can find/afford it. Addtronics and Zippy both make 400W PSU ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858
  9. Hey, Ohso, care to share that nifty little proggy? I own Privateer and Strike Fighter and would love to play them again Alas, i'm stuck in the Win2k world myself... ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858 [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 01-30-2001).]
  10. I think the whole underground thing is funny. The progy's may be available, but it's almost not worth dl'ng when compared to the amount of work it takes to get an old game to play within current OS's.
  11. [rp] 0300 hrs. 19 May, 3008 Secret EarthCOM Facility Peace was fading. The black void slowly lightened just as sound began to invade his universe. The regular beat of a drum brought a dull pain. A warm metalic taste played in his mouth. Akira could just make out the humanoid figure slowly coming into focus. He strained trying to make sense of what he was experiencing. In a moment peacefully blissful ignorance left and was replaced. The lights shown bright and he understood the patient glare of the man in front of him. "Good. I was concerned that weren't able to handle as much pain as we expected." The man flicked an invisible something from his knee. "I've found that a good deal of pain is fairly effective at getting to information. It seems, however, that you have found a way around the influence of my machinations. Would you care to share your techniques?" "No," Akira's word was strained and gruff. A spray of blood escaped with his answer. "Come now, Akira. Consider it a professional courtesy from one spook to another. We are in this together, you and I. Your performance directly reflects on me. So, you will understand why I am concerned when you atempt to circumvent my work." "No," Akira's voice cracked as it left his dry throat. Blood from his mouth was trickling down his throat and drying. "That didn't sound very healthy. Perhaps some food and water would liven you up." The man tapped at his ear and sub-vocalized a command. "There. Refreshments are on their way. We'll have a bite and drink in about an hour.In the mean time, I have some water here. You tell me how and I'll let you drink now." Akira knew he needed the water. Humans can typically go without water for four days. Some reports put that at a week, but only in perfect conditions. It'd been four days since he gulped the small amount from the toilet in his cell. It wasn't an ideal source of water, but it was all he had. Surprisingly, he didn't get sick. But he knew he wouldn't last much longer without a drink. The blood in his mouth was thick and pastey now. The information his interogater wanted wasn't really important. It was merely a tool Akira used to counter the interogation. During training at GALCOM, officers were taught that if captured do everything you can to escape. If you can't then do what you can to cooperate minimally. Take what was offered and give out information when you needed to. Codes could be changed; plans altered; positions moved. The information you had was not as important as staying alive. Akira had come to disagree with that last part. The information he had was more important than his life. But, it was still early in the game and his captor needed something. "The technique is simple." His voice sounded as if he had rocks in his throat. "A budhist mediation technique," he coughed. Dry red patches landed on the floor in front of him. "They use it to reach a higher plain of existance. Another realm I was told. I merely use the same technique to heighten how my brain perceives the pain. Endorphins release and I achieve a deep sleep something like a mild coma." "Interesting. Self-induced coma brought about by a chemical response to pain. Very ingenious. But, the human mind is capable of many things. Once when I was interogating a mercenary..." Akira could see this was going to be another diatribe. "The water, please." "Oh, yes, right. Sorry about that. I tend to get a bit involved in my work." The man reached behind him and grabbed a plastic cup. "Here, delivered as promised." Akira threw back the entire cup. He immediately bent over and wrenched the liquid from his stomach. The vomit spalshed onto the man's shoes. "Damnit, man, control yourself! Do you know how hard it is to find good shoes in this part of space!" "Urine," Akira weezed between the dry heaves. "Urine?" The man turned around and grabbed a second plastic cup. He sniffed and sipped the liquid. "Damn, you're right. I must have grasped your last urine sample by mistake." Akira was double over on the floor. "Unfortunately, I now need this water to clean up your mess. Really, had you just held yourself together you would have been fine. It's very hard to poison yourself with your own urine." That was all Akira could take for the day. his mind began to shut down involuntarily this time. "Damnit, not again," The man said disgustingly as he planted his boot into Akira's stomach. "Get up man. You are better than this. I've seen children take more than you!" He was begining to scream now as he planted more kicks to Akira's mid section. But it was too late. Akira knew they'd have to take him to medical and rehydrate and nourish him. He let the black peace spread over him in a wave knowing that he'd won this minor battle. One at a time. Just one at a time and I will survive he thought as he sunk back into nirvana. [/rp]
  12. hehe, Blades, I have tried a British summertime... sorry, your weather is nothing compared to what happens in TORNADO ALLEY. The weather here in Oklahoma is much like Charles description: 80 degrees F. one day with a foot of snow and 20 deg. F. temps the next. Wait, that's not all. Combined with 60mph cold north winds and the wind chill factor drives the temp back down into the negatives I don't mind the cold though. Were it not for being Canada, I'd rather enjoy the weather in Toronto and/or Ottawa [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 12-17-2000).]
  13. Ok, here's how things MUST go down for this to pay off: 1. Civillians MUST make it into space. Humanity is taking its sweet time. Don't count on it in our generation. 2. This company MUST convince lawmakers to uphold their claim to the chunks of land vs. the corporate or other claim. Fact is, should anyone really start making headway (govt. or private) no UN resolution is going to stop them. Possession is 9/10 of the law in these instances. Governments can take what they want. No one is going to go to war over the UN resolution and it's not enforcable. Corporations will always have more money than this organization. Money gets you everywhere. You can count on lawmakers to uphold the corp. rights before the individual rights if only because NO individual can afford to get there. 3. Like I said above, if a Corporation/Government has the means they will claim what they want. They won't fear the law on earth. There are NO laws in space. Who's going to enforce them? I'll tell you who: Corporations and their private armies will be the new law in space. However, at $15 an acre, who cares. For a few hundred dollars you can buy into the chance that it will work. If it doesn't you really won't be out too much money. If it does work...the payoff possibilities could be amazing. Heck, the bragging rights will be good for a while
  14. Silence, you have been approved in the Fleet DB. Your current assignment is to Eversor Fleet and your Fleet Commander is Vice Admiral Chavik. I suggest you visit Insurgent One's website and learn all you can about our brotherhood. You should then check in with your boss for assignments. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858
  15. J.W., Your first problem is the onboard video. It's a vanilla TNT. Not TNT2 or Geforce. If you've alloted 32mb of RAM to the video in your BIOS, then I feel for you You should disable your onboard video and install your old V330. The bus between your system RAM and your onboard video chip is SLOW. Most likely it's only 66mhz. The bus between the RAM and video processor on the V330 is much faster. Also from the faq: Regardless of how much memory your 2D card has, BC3K will only report the first 8MB... Next. Get rid of WinME. What about DS's reply did you not understand? BC3K is a DOS game that runs in the Windows environment. WinME has little support for DOS games! --- The following is for Win9x only. You're on your own for WinME --- You can also do the following at your own risk You need to run scandisk. Then defrag your HD with the virtual mem turned off. Reboot and set the min and max virtual mem to 256MB. Then go into your System.ini and find the heading [vcache] and add the following lines: MinFileCache=32768 MaxFileCache=32768 ChunkSize=512 The preceding tips are "AT YOUR OWN RISK" If you don't know what you're doing you can do some serious damage. Check out www.speedguide.net for information on how to speed up everything windows. Now that you have faster video processing (i.e. the v330) and have tweeked your system (at your own risk), turn off the background music. The problems you are experiencing are a combination of factors: a system that was never designed to play games. most systems designed around motherboards with onboard (read: built in) video and audio are intended for business apps (word processing/spreadsheet) and/or internet access. Not Games. BC3K's AI is a CPU HOG. This has always been a known part of the game. If all your onboard hardware is bottlenecking your system RAM, you can expect the game to run slow when you are playing ACM. The cpu has to process a good amount of the graphics (in software mode), fight for it's share of memory bandwidth, track multiple NPC's across multiple regions, run the AI, and still deal with your keyboard/joystick inputs. This is why it's very important that your peripherals (video, sound, etc.) be able to handle their own workload. The AI process alone is enough of a workload for any cpu. If you have a system with sub-par parts you will get sup-par performance. It's just like the difference in racing a tweeked out muscle car against it's stock from the factory model. The custom muscle car will be faster. If I were you and had the money, I'd go and get a Voodoo5 5500 PCI video card (the prices have dropped as of late). This will help A LOT. It would be better to have a fast PCI based video card than to rely on the slow AGP to system RAM bus. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858 [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 11-25-2000).]
  16. Being a raider is illegal. However, no one is stopping you As for traveling in groups: As long as you don't form an official group (i.e., you and some of your friends just get together and join MP once in a while) you're fine. Just don't bring the group together in an official sense or in RP. DS has already explained that Raiders, Mercs, etc. are a solitary bunch that don't form groups. Welcome to the game. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858

Andromeda... or as I like to call it: Kevin Sorbo starring in HERCULES IN SPACE it's ok. the 3d work is kinda neet but nothing spectacular. the crew and storyline are formulaic not all the actors are capable
  20. Radio Shack TRS 80 (Trash 80) one 5.25 floppy and (amazing for it's time) a tape storage drive. Wrote my first BASIC prog'ys there too. Then got the tape storage, then the 5.25 flopy, man that was sooooo cool, being able to save programs after the computer was turned off Hehe, took a class on that machine in the 4th grade and got my first taste of bitmap programing [This message has been edited by Akira (edited 11-03-2000).]
  21. [rp] Too many beers, too many brawls, and too many scars. 0430 came too early these days. Gunnery Sgt. Diamond was happy to be waking up here though. Since his last tour with then Lt. Commander Neena Povlovski, he'd been posted to a desk job at GHQ. It was a good job as far as admin jobs went. He was able to teach new officers what it should mean to be an officer. Sadly, though, many weren't ready to take orders from a Marine, let alone an enlisted man. Fortunately, he was also in charge of induction to the officers "Combat Basics" class. Those that didn't respect him before, learned why they should've from the begining. But, he was considered too old to teach combat full time, so he was relegated to seminar classes. Too much paperwork but at least he was still an active marine. Diamond was just getting used to the years of watching new commanders come and go. He'd even decided that this wasn't a bad way to go. The brush with death that'd gotten this job was too close. Sure, he'd been in his share of scrapes, but having all but a cupfull of your blood replaced with cloned supply did something to a man. The doctors told him that it was just his imagination, but he knew better. He didn't feel the same; didn't see things quite the same; didn't taste, hear, smell or feel things quite the same. Everything was just a touch off. So, Diamond was just getting used to his desk job and the workout every few weeks. He was getting used to it, when he found himself accepting one Neena Povlovski, Commander, GALCOM's request to return to active shipborne duty. That's when the 0430 wake ups; training 5 times a day; earning the respect of 40 EF Marines; daily intrusion excersizes; equipment breakdouts and checks; target practice with the grunts; mission reviews that didn't review anything but speculated everything; dinner with his troops; discussions and drinks with the Commander 'til 2330; roster and duty checks and finally to bed at 0030. He was a Marine, though, and he'd sleep enough when he was dead. Well, that's what he told himself at the end of his cycle every day. The days were to become different soon. More different than Gun'y would care to deal with. But he is a Marine and would go to hell and bring back the devil himself, if his Commander ordered it. He just didn't know she'd order it so soon... [/rp}
  22. Hehe... sad that you haven't even heard from your Fleet Commander... Well, since he didn't chime in, I'd though, as your former, that I'd do the honors. Bishamon members, you should feel very proud of yourselves. Only the Elite of all Insurgent Forces make it into this fleet. Who else would the Insurgents entrust to care for our newly acquired SS once owned by the infamous GALCOM Wraith Fleet. However, although Bishamon has rights to be a proud lot, I encourage you commanders to keep an even tone. You are primary force when the Insurgents need things done quietly. Often as a lone ship and it's commander, you are the fleet that keeps Insurgent forces from declaring an all out war on the UFN. Without your surgical precision and discretion, many of our goals would not be possible but for the blunt hand of visibly brute force. In the end what you accomplish; what you deter; what you discover; what you are saves countless lives of millions of humans throughout the galaxy. Unfortunately, the nature of your job leaves you in the ackward position of knowing just how close others have come to their end. Even worse, though, you can say nothing about it and receive no praise for your actions (save what accolades you are given in secret by the ones that command you). Be strong, gentlemen and find quiet satisfaction in your knowledge when others (many times, less deserving) around you seem to take undeserved glory. You are the true hero of the Insurgency continuing in the proud tradition that has brought our fight to the minds of all humanity. ------------------ Insurgent Two, Akira ICV Nevermore, Spectre HQ (Antis) Minister of War, Insurgency Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series ICQ 13379858 "You can only love or hate something you truly understand"
  23. Aaaahh, sounds like basic training (i.e. boot camp) It can be done. I had to run that in 11 after 3 weeks. Started the first week with half mile until the laps got fast enought to meet the time requirement. The next week was 1 mile until the laps got fast enough to meet the requirement. Third week was 1.5 miles. It was 1.5 til the end of training. Every morning between 4 and 5 am. It can be done providing you're in good physical condition starting the training. That means you have to be physically active before you start this, and that does not include 12 hours in front of your computer playing BC every day! Good Luck.
