Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are my two favorite books of all time (and a love a lot of other JRR Tolkien middle-earth books - basically all of them I've ever read, even the unfinished works). Hell, I even have hardbound collector's editions of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Anyway, I still have this sinking feeling that they're going to screw it up in the movie. I've never once seen a fantasy-based movie that had even remotely good acting. And on top of that, I can't think of any "throw away" or "bad" parts of the books - so I can't imagine how they're going to shorten them for a movie. Oh, well... maybe I'll be wrong. .......Dare I mention 'Dungeons and Dragons'?....
  2. IM going crazy waiting till December 19th. My friend and I have reserved tickets for the midnight showing and are wearing WIZARD ROBES to the theater that night (we're such dorks)
  3. quote:Originally posted by Ancharon: Argh. So many choices. Does anyone have any suggestions on which fan to get to support an Athlon XP 1800+ (yeah, I decided to go with it)? I've found everything but that, now. There are tons and tons of choices, but a lot of the little blurbs about the fans don't say what speed they safely support up to... If I were you I'd stick with a 3DCool fan. They're a little pricey, but they will definitely drastically improve the performancwe of your CPU. They're at 3DCool.com i think
  4. My computer's been down for almost a year. If not for my laziness, I could easily have replaced the outdated hunk of metal by now. It's a great computer, but the CPU overheated, the RAM overloaded and crashed, and the motherboard was FRIED all in the same second. I might be able to save the hard drive, but I could upgrade my computer to a 1.7 Ghz BEAST with a new motherboard for just 200$. Haven't you guys ever heard of pricewatch?
  5. quote:Originally posted by Menchise: Hehe. Westwood's trademark ability to 'play it safe' is astonishing. First, they spend five years developing almost nothing but sequels (and prequels) to Command and Conquer and Dune 2, now they're developing an MMOG that would make Freelancer Online look sophisticated. Hey! Command and conquer (however unrealistic) was one of the better games I've ever played
  6. As a punk rocker, I believe racism is the ultimate crime against humanity. I don't even believe in race. There is only one race, the human race. However, in this case, I think $ilk makes an excellent argument. The flaw is, statistically, the majority of hijackers ARE of Middle Eastern descent, but the pictures we see in the newspapers and magazines show clean-shaven men almost indistinguishable from myself or any other white man. Maybe its just that the racial line for me has been blurred by my openness to other cultures and ethnicities, but to ME, they could be just about anyone. Terrorists aren't going to try to LOOK like they're from the Middle East, and if we are looking for people from the middle east, they're going to try their hardest not to 'fit the profile'. I would make an exception to my rabid anti-rascist stance on racial profiling for security reasons, as $ilk pointed out, but I'm not sure of whether it would work well or not.
  7. Man, I remember Rebel Assault 2. Arguably one of the greatest (albeit very scripted) games I ever played. That was LucasArts, wasn't it? It was way ahead of its time. I don't know about this new one, it has gotten good reviews, and I won't even Start on the Jedi Knight series
  8. I saw it, it's a great movie, (the quidditch scene is killer) but not really as ground-breaking as I had hoped. Read the Book! it's SO much better. Also, after I saw the Lord of the Rings trailer, I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the movie Lord of the Rings.........mmmmmmmm
  9. (my dad told me this one-it must have happened in the seventies sometime) About the dumbest thing I ever did was, (in a desperate attempt to get my own car a week after getting my lisence) take an old 10-cylyndar Korean war era truck engine my grandpa had lying around, and stick it in a (crappy, crappy, crappy) 1954 Ford Fairlane. It took 3 months to get it running, and the flywheel didn't quite fit into the clutch assembly, but I drove it only once....on the Berlin Turnpike. For those non-Connecticut residents, the Berlin-pike is the drag-racing capital of New England (it was then, too). People saw an old Ford with flames spitting out the exhaust pipe (which I later realized was the result of an insufficiently-aspirated exhaust system combined with a poor fuel mixture, and a crappy valve adjustment) and assumed I wanted to race, even though I was only test-driving it with my brother. Cops are everywhere on the road, but there was one stop-light with these stupid people in a Chevy something-or-other they had souped up and were racing. I accepted the challenge and when the light went green, let out the clutch and stomped on the gas..... (here's the good part...) A series of events happened all at once. The power of the ten-cylider engine and the bad flywheel-transmission connection put way to much weight on the clutch, and destroyed it. The engine revved to an incredible 9000 RPM's (it prolly made about 380 HP at the time) and the jerry-can gas tank I had rigged up dropped off when the car jolted. apparently some gas got on the super-heated exhaust pipe, and the whole rear section of the car exploded into flames. The traffic in the road stopped, and my brother fainted from the heat of the explosion. I pulled him out, and THEN the cops came, saw the car wasn't registered, and ticketed me, gave me the towing fee, and brought me to my parents. They took my lisence and wouldn't give it back for another 6 months. (I call this the legend of the dragon car, and I think it's a big lie, but my dad has the charred lisence plate from the car. if anything, it's a good story)

  11. Even though I'm still in High School, my car stories are varied and intense. My father and I have been restoring a 1954 Volkswagen Beetle since May. When we got it, it was in the worst possible condition. The torsion bars had snapped, so the car was practically scraping the ground. The electrical system was shot, and the only thing that did work was the headlights (intermittently). The only good thing was the 1776cc Porsche engine in it (may not seem too powerful, but a beetle only weighs about 1000 pounds. It goes about 120 mph). Amazingly, it was almost rust-free. We went to Rockville, Maryland to pick it up. I have serious doubts about whether it was street legal or not, but whatever the case, we stupidly decided to drive it 400 miles home (it also somehow was in running condition). After doing some minor fix-ups, (such as creating an aluminum/PVC pipe exhaust system-it melted off later-) we took it on the road. Now as we all know, Beetles are economic cars. I asked how much gas was in it, and my father said he didn't know, but he assumed it would be enough to get us to my uncles house, 20 miles away so we could spend the night. A 1954 Beetle does NOT have a gas guage (it only has a speedometer, which, by the way, was not working either), and instead has an emergency reserve fuel tank that can be activated through a lever in the floor. We were on I-91, in WASHINGTON DC TRAFFIC (!!) when the car ran out of gas. "no worries," said my dad, "we'll just flip the reserve lever." he reaches down, pulls the lever, and it comes off in his hand!, so we were stuck in the middle of the highway, in rush hour,(in an illegal car) with no gas. Somehow, we managed to find a break large enough to push the car to the side of the road, and called AAA, who later came to the rescue. A LOT more happened on that trip, but I can't type well with a broken thumb (the result of another accident in the same car). My other 3 cars (which are mine, even though im only a junior in High School) are an '86 Pontiac 6000 GT, an '85 Monte Carlo, and a '68 Mustang convertible. P.S. My family is NOT rich, so don't think my parents drive Mercedes', or we live in a mansion, me and my dad just have a thing for cars
  12. I 've been telling everyone about this stupid dream....... I dreamed I somehow managed to test drive a Porsche GT3 for some magazine. (the nicest car on the road these days). So I get in the car, turn it on, put it into gear, and....... .........WAKE UP !!!!! I tried to fall back to sleep and pick up where I left off, but it never works. Has this ever happened to any of you?
  13. Exactly how long will we probably have to wait if we didn't pre-order? And what are the odds of availability off the shelf (in Connecticut)?
  14. quote:Originally posted by salisbury: well then your gonna have to wait a while I'm willing to wait a looong time. Before I even get the game, i have to get my REAL computer running again (the one i'm using isn't too great) It's not that the guys at my local EB are idiots or incompetent or whatever, it could have been his first day. but still, I haven't seen any hype about the game coming out in the store. I don't care if I can't get a copy, i just feell that my local EB isn't quite up to date (it's very small) and they should at least know something about the game.
  15. Getting back to the topic: I passed by an EB today and asked if Battlecruiser Millenium was there. The guy looked at me and said "Battlecruiser Millenium?" I think this is an insult to both the gaming industry in general and 3000AD studios. How could they not know? Needless to say, i am never patronizing that particular store again, and will definitely buy my BCM online rather than from some inferior real-life store.
  16. Though I am afraid i can't help Ferigad with his problem, i figured that as long as introductions are going on, i might as well introduce myself (I hope you don't mind), seeing that I too am new to the board. I downloaded BC3000AD and must say that I think its one of the most overlooked games of all time. I had never even heard about it until i stumbled across it. I have a decent system, and it runs almost flawlessly, and I have not discovered any bugs like the one Ferigad is experiencing. I can't wait to get my hands on BCM and look forward to posting more (useful) input on this board. THank you, Dave
