  1. Do you guys even know where the term liberal comes from? It comes from the same place the concept of the free market comes from. John Stuart Mill anyone? It is so beautifully ironic that you call me a bleeding hart liberal.
  2. You guys got it. Sorry about that message. I was having an off day. I shall be more articulate in the future.
  3. I just wanted to post an observation reguarding the SF marin jetpacks. My AE's jet pack is back to normal with the .3 patch. I has the original 4-point thing, but the other SF marines outfits in the game still have that half jetpack for marines on planets... No big deal, and it is always possible that I've done something wrong. Any ideas?
  4. I've notice the same things. Like you though, I don't want to complain. The game rocks as is, but I do find taking our stations a wee bit to easy...
  5. $ilk: "Where I see it, the forcing of one group of your population to pay for another part is tantamount to the exact same thing that slavery is - forcing one group to better the lifestyle of another." -What do you call denying a starving man food when you have more than enough? I call it murder. "It is immoral to force someone to pay for someone who chooses not to work." -Are you really so silly that you can't comprehend the fact that not all poor people are poor because they are lazy? "If someone can't work, it is still immoral to make someone use their labor to provide for the person." -So someone who can't work, deserve automatically to die? "If someone is to give by choice, it has some value." -Does a starving man care about the intention of his benefactor? "Where is the dignity in collecting something you didn't earn?" -There is no dignity in it, thats what motivates people to get off their buts and do something. Canada has universal access to welfare and unemployment insurance. Yet people on welfare make up a tiny minority of the population. "At the same time, what is right about having your earnings taken from you because someone didn't work as hard as you?" -Again, not all people are need through their own fault. "I'm going to say that since it's foundation, no capitalist nation that allowed a vastly deregulated market economy has failed." -You can say it all you want, it doesn't make it true. The great depression proved that regulation is nescessary to keep a capitalist market from collapse. "In a socialist country, what rewards are there besides the satisfaction that you looted the hard workers to pay for the lazy ones?" -The satisfaction that through you efforts, you have made the lives of everyone in your nation better, and that your strenght has compensated for other people's weakness. You said you like nationalism. That is about the only good sentiment that comes from nationalism. "Capitalism also understands that if efficiency minimizes cost, it is a good investment. As most environmental concerns are myths or half truths, I find it hard to believe any so called "study" taken of the planet." -What are you talking about? You think pollution is a hoax? Where do you get you facts? The Weekly World News? Do you think about the things you say? I wasn't saying that there was a study done that stated that the worlds resources were finit. I mean that any idiot could see that there isn't an infinit supply of everything. "I believe Nationalism is an inherently better policy than globalism. Because it maximizes lifestyle for the most competitive. It's Darwinism at work." -That sounds like something hitler would have said. He was a nationalist too. Is competition the only noble acticity? "G.W. Bush is also a much better president than both Clinton and his father. You are poking fun at a supposed disability. Roosevelt couldn't walk, are you going to poke fun at the leadership shown during WW2?" -That means Roosevelt couldn't work hauling lumber. According to you that means he should die. Being a halfwit isn't a disablity, it is a trajedy. Anyway, I was only pointing out that Bush was only a leader because someone else writes his speeches. I bet if his next speech was "bush is always right" you would believe him. I don't need to make fun of Bush. The rest of the civilized world already knows him for what he is. It is unfortunate you do not. "Clinton wouldn't have done anything after Sept 11, but moan about how it's our fault." -Don't take this the wrong way. What happened was a horrible horrible thing, but there are reasons the world in general has a distaste for the US. Clintons ability to understand this in spite of the horrible crime commited is what makes him a better man than Bush, who doesn't know his ass from his elbow. "Bush is a good leader, because what he says, he does. Disagree with him or not, you have to admit he's honorable to his word." -There is no such thing as an honorable politician. The system and public opinion dictates that there is a nescesity for decit and immorality. That's why I hate politics. Surely you are not so naive that you can't see this. "Who cares how they feel? This country was founded on the principles of God. If they can't deal with the symbolism of our founders, they should either leave or shut up and take it. Erasing our national identity to please some moaning whining snivelling leftist is wrong." -That's right $ilk, Kill em. I suggest concentration camps. Probably they care about how they feel. If you really gave a crap about your nation, you would care about how its citizens felt. You would also understand that you nation is founded upon the concept of immagration. Perhaps making people feel welcome would be a good idea. Just out of morbid curiosity, if I don't beleive in god, and I swear an oath on the bible in a US court, do I still have to tell the truth? Why should I? Just to be clear, you aren't giving your word, you are giving gods word. "Life is hard, life is intolerant of your wishes. Your idealism means nothing to the realities of world policy, admirable though it may be." -I'm a realist too. But one's hopes, wishes, and moral founding must be in founded in the ideal, otherwise you've got no chance of standing strait in the real world. "As you should be, nationalism is a good thing." -No, it isn't a good thing. It's the kind of thing that start wars over distinctions that don't matter. I only invoked a false nationalism in order to distinguish myself from you. "I guess Canada isn't located in North America?" -This is my point exaclty. People from the US fail to realise that calling themselves american does not distinguish themselves from canadians, mexicans, brazilians, chileans... the list goes on. Perhapse if you started reffering to yourselves as something more appropriate like: United-States-of-America-ians, things would be better. Or maybe USAians for short. Then I could use the term american appropriatly. "Since you are so sure of where you can go, why don't you try it?" -I travel every chance I get. But I'm not taking an american flag with me. Why would I? I don't understand what your talking about. I'll happily go to vietnam, or cuba, or anywhere else I'm free of american toursts that are angry and yelling about how no one speaks english. I have actually gone places and have had people say to me "Canadian? Not american? Oh... very good!" "So do I [have accees to medicare], what's your point?" -My point was made, you just didn't bother to quote it. I shall reiterate: I have access to medicare, regardless of whether I can afford to pay for the insurance. When I go to a hospital, the first question is "what is wrong"" not "do you have insurance?" "Somehow I don't trust your definition of "decent politician", one would think it's someone who can read a teleprompter and not someone who can lead." -My definition of politician is someone that does a decent job at what they are supposed to do, as opposed to someone who has charisma and provides inspiration, but has no actual idea of what to do. "I can point out cities in the United States which have virtually 100% gun ownership and have the lowest crime rates in the world. I can also point out cities in the USA that have virtually 0% gun ownership and the highest crime rates in the world." -You are wrong, but that is another argument. "I believe that the ability to defend yourself and crime is related as well." -You belief no more proves this than it proves the existence of god, or santa claus (Who is makes elves work slave labour so that lazy kids can have toys.) "Menchise - I'm no longer going to call you a liberal anymore. I think you've earned the title of Socialist from my lips" -Mine as well. Menchise, you rock. Anyway, $ilk. You don't know what you are talking about. You spout crap: "environmental concerns are myths," canada has 75% tax rate. If you were reasonable, you'd be worth arguing with. I wish I could remember who said this, but I can't, but it is too apt to not be used "arguing with a man who has given up his reason is like giving medecine to the dead." In other words, I'm flogging a dead horse. We will never agree. I formally challenge you to a duel as soon as multi-player comes out. Cheers "Sir, I have found you an argument; but I am not obliged to find you an understanding." -Samuel Johnson [ 12-21-2001: Message edited by: AshSpear ]
  6. That did it SC. Works like a charm. Many thanks. Cheers
  7. We should change this thread to "the complete ignorance of reality" thread. What are you talking about 75 percent tax rate in Canada? What derranged part of your brain made that up? Do you even know where Canada is? The system is also NOT a failure. It has its short-comings, no question. It has plenty of pluses. I have a good friend who's kidney don't work. He got a new one and it didn't cost him anything. He is on drugs for the rest of his life to prevent regection... those are paid for too. When my grandfather died slowly of cancer it didn't put two generations of my family in debt. This isn't only people that can afford healthcare, this is everyone. Now. Lets look at some other things. Education. How much does it cost to get a university education in the US? I'm not even going to compare it to Canada, there is no point. Now lets look at the silly things people are saying. "The US is the most generous society in the world." Based on what? Your opinion? Canada has been voted, over and over again, the best place in the world to live. No one, but americans, have ever said that about the states. "capitalism has always worked..." This, again, is not true. Original societies were not capitalist. The functioned on a barter system, and were generally what are now calld communes. "Socialism rewards NOTHING, whether you are the hard worker or the lazy worker, you get the same thing, therefore the hard worker will see that and therefore work less hard, and then EVERYONE suffers" There are other forms of reward other than money. You, obviously, can't see that. "That whole statement is the biggest load of BS that I have ever seen, if we are running out of a resource, call it oil as an example, even though we have over 250 years worth at this point just in discovered reserves. but say we are running out, a capitalist society will find a solution 10-20 times faster then a socialist society would, and there will ALWAYS be a solution found, because that is how a company makes money, and the best solution will make the most money!!" This is idiotic. People have found many solutions for many environmental problems. These are largely ignored because they are not immediatly as economically productive as other non-solution, so they are ignored by corporations. Capitalism lacks forsight. The fact is that ther ARE finit resources on this planet, and Capitalism is based on infinit growth. Any 2 year old that can add can understand this problem. "and who told you this? the only way that socialism could possibly work would be at the point of a gun, see the USSR and China, this is HONORABLE MORAL GROUNDS?" I READ the communist manifesto. China and the former USSR are not communist societies. They only pretend to be. "Again, a statement with no factual historical basis. CAPITALISM works, it has always worked whenever it has been tried, capitalism PULLS EVERYONE out of poverty, it raises EVERYONES standard of living. In this country, if you make less then $20,000 you are considered below the poverty line, where else in the world is this true? NO WHERE!!! That's where." United States society is a perfect case in point. If you don't know your own statistics, that's your problem. "Conclusion, Capitalism RAISES ALL boats, Socialism SINKS 99% of the boats" You assume that all the boats are in the US. You ignore canibalistic forign policy. "You have been brainwashe into a dreamworld, if you look at the facts, you will see how wrong you really are." This from a man that thinks the US is the savior of the world. Look at the results of your last few "Lets go save some ignorant backwards nation campaigns." Kosovo is a depleted uranium badland, but you sure saved them good. Read some news that doesn't come from CNN or another patriot american. Oh, and how many people that are calling me brainwashed voted for G. W. Bush? The man can barely read a teleprompter. Also, somone said the US was a perfect example of different cultures coexisiting in an atmosphere of personal respect. I've never heard an offical government speech that didn't involve the words "god bless america!" How do you think buddhists, hindus, atheists etc feel about that? Menchise is the only voice of reason in this thread and I salut him. I also congratulated on being more cool headed than myself. Oh, and why shouldn't social responsability be forced? Why should responsability be optional? Why shouldn't consideration for the plight of other fellow human beings be mandatory? Oh, and I AM Canadian. And I'm proud of it. I can go anywhere in the world, and when people find out I'm not an american they immediatly like me out of relief for the fact that I'm not an american. I can hang an american flag on my backpack, and walk around anywhere in the world and not get targeted for a violent act. Take your american flags to vietnam. I have access to medicare. I live in a country were we don't toss out a decent politician becaus of his personal affairs. I live in a country where the violent crime rate is actually going down! Who else can say that? Don't think crime and economics are related? If you don't, then your opinion isn't worth a damn thing anyway. My sincere apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. This post was meant primarily for people that tell me I'm brainwashed, and blab about how Canada is going to hell when the don't know a damn thing about what they are talking about.
  8. I don't know if it is the same problem, but once I was driving an oc, and it got caught in some terrain. I went upside down and did all kinds of weird stuff and I couldn't get it to move properly. I jumpet out, walked back to the destroyed enemy base (it was a mop up operation and I had a bunch of marines there making sure everything was good and dead) I evaced myself and my troops. Back on the CC I sent a shuttle after the OC and it got picked up... I don't know how. I also had an OC vanish once when I gave it an evac waypoint... that was a few patches ago though. I sent a shuttle after it and successfully recovered it. I suggest you just send a shuttle with an extract vehiclex waypoint.
  9. The difference between socialism and capitalism is social responsability. Capitalism has none, and basically follows the logic of biggest wins. Socialism understand the fact that people do not, naturally, start on an equal playing field. If I am the son of a rich man, I have resources that someone born on the street does not. You can say what you will about survival of the fittest, and the self made man... these are not bad ideas, but they fail to account for the reality of complete poverty which none of us, who sit around playing BCM on our high end computers can really claim to understand. Socialism is deeply flawed as a potential system, in that it fails to account for the fact that many people wont work if they don't absolutly have to. It does however adress the fact that a fat man should give up his ham sandwich to save the life of a starving man. This is precisely the sense of responsability capitalism lacks. And while yes, responsability lies with the individual, just as we cannot assume everyone will work out of responsability, we also cannot assume people will share. The basic rewards for work idea doesn't really hold up either. As somone said above, they'd like to be compensated if they were stuck doing manual labour, rather than doing a easy manegerial job. The fact is that the manegerial jobs pay more. I've worked jobs where I literally move a tone of goods in a day, all the while sucking in dust and crap, all for min wage. I know peole that get paid heaps to sit on their asses and do a half assed job behind a desk in a university office. That is capitalism. Capitalism does have its good sides. It does spur people to personal acheivment... however it is fundamentally incouraging selfishness. Socialism/communism, while would result in a lot lazy people doing nothing, the people who would excel would be the responsible, giving individuals, and any society rewards excellence in someway. Capitalism represents a complete lack of social morality. It is a modern neanderathal king of the hill. It is also founded on on a logistically unstable premis: capitalism places the impetus on constant growth, more profit. Infinit growth in a world with finit resources. Capitalism is doomed to collaspe. Socialism, in its intent at least, is grounded on more honorable moral grounds. Capitalism has no intent other than greed and hunger. The fact is, nither work. Capitalism causes an every increasing gap between rich and poor, socialism does cause laziness. A compromise is nescessary. One that takes into accound the basness of human nature, as well as aspires to higher morality and dignity.
  10. Beowulf is the only thing better than Lord of the Rings and even then, only the Seamus Heaney translation. I will of cours reserve judgment until my knowledge of old english becomes complete enough to read it in the original. Anyway, I'm an Englsih lit major, and consquently a nerd and purist, so I wasn't even going to go and see the movie until for fear of what they'd done to the story. Then I found out Ian McKellan is in it. Nothing Ian McKellan is in can be bad (except apt pupil). Ian McKellan is the only man to ever walk the earth that could make Richard III a better character than he already was. What awsome actor. Anyway, I can't wait until I get a chance to see the film.
  11. Just a questionregarding modifications to the models. I read that you have to make sure you add all the tags for the models, but is it possible to add extra ones? Could I add those BC strobes to a firestorm, or would that send everything haywire? Cheers
  12. Do you really want to see it tac? Just let me know where to send it. I'll go and find that thread about how to send them... I did a hull search once with my AE to investigate the problem and it was as if I got caught on it and started spinning around too.
  13. I'll try the new 23.11 divers again. I don't like them though. I can't figure out why, but when I install them, my system peformance drops drastically... Regardless, the weird thing is that I started the campaign, I left the CC and jetpacked around, then after a while I tried to do the same thing, but there was no jetpack... I don't mean the image nescessarily, but I had no mobility apart from spining around with the mouse. Anyway, thanks, i'll keep looking into my driver situation. That's probably it.
  14. Ok, I still can't deploy a leech mine without it getting stuck in my hull. I do NOT understand.
  15. You can't actually deploy SF marines in space. My question is why can't you deploy them on plantes. The seem to die instantly upon transport to a planet.
  16. I have the same problem with the cargo butting in logistix when docked with a shuttle at a station. I can use tradcom and repairs fine, but the cargo always results in a CTD. After downloading the latest patch so that I would have the jetpack back in space, I started a new campaign commander game and immediatle exited my cc to check things out. I had a jetpack. I played for about an hour, and then exited the CC again, and there is no jetpack. Also, the only image of my AR rendered after I exit teh CC is my AE's gun.
  17. Simparadox has hit the nail on the head. If I beam down with marines, then there is an active defense, but I can walk around without worring about taking a hit. Once my marines are dead, no one even looks at me. I can walk up to marines, and they ignore me. If I beam down alone, nothing happens. I can shoot at buildings, take out starbases (it takes a while) but nothing comes after my AE... the stormcarrier, as far as I can tell, had no damage. I don't know. Something must be messed up. I keep doing fresh installs, figuring that some file or other is corrupted, but nothing changes. I've done defrags, surface-scans. I can't figure it out. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what I've done wrong.
  18. I've been messing around at things a bit. I went and stood in front of a enemy marine. I got in its line of fire, and id didn't do anything. I just stood there. I flew my ter/mil ship to, I think pixan, enemy station in lennen... I just just a couple of feet from its hull, and it didn't fire a shot at me. The storm carrier was pointed almost directly at me. My ship was stationary. I thought that it was so weird that I just sat there watching from an external view and it kept doing nothing for a while. Even I Resing himself was piloting the ship, it should have been able to get a firing solution.
  19. Ok, this is a wee bit off topic, but could someone translate the phrase "anyone see a trailer?" My pilots say it constantly. I have no idea what it means.
  20. Ok. I just beamed myself down to the center of a hostil base, and nothing happened. No one even took a pot shot at me. I beamed myself back up to find that a stormacarrier was sitting about three feet off my port side and had its ptas scratching away at my sheild... yet it never fired its main guns at me... Something is abviously wrong. It is obviously not a bug, or someone else would have noticed things like this happenen, and is why I'm not posting in tech support. Does anyone have any idea how I could have messed things up? I can't figure this one out.

    Welcome

Cur: to continue with being off the topic, there is pretty much nothing left after ragnorak, they are all dead, and premanantly dead this time. A sort of resurected Baldur is holed up somewhere and recreates the world... Dreada: Forms... sorry, I've missed something. What do you mean? Cheers
  22. Astral Projection Saved My Ship. I parked my CC on a quiet part of earth to give the Systems crew some time to install some upgrades. I powered down almost all systems except launch control and life support, and launched myself in a mk II shuttle to go on some scout/trading runs while I'm waiting for the work to be done. After a few Galcom Wraith runs I went to explore Lyrius and buzzed around there for a while. I must of done something wrong because I started to get those electricity effect all over my shuttle. I didn't seem to be taking damage, but I didn't know what was going on so I hit the after burners and headed back to my CC back on earth. When I got there my sheilds and hull on the CC were down to about 50 percent, as were most of its systems... Don't know what happened to my shuttle, which seemed fine, and I have no idea what damaged the CC sitting around all by itself... Thought it was a neat coincidence though, and a funny story... or at least a good headline. Maybe we should start a psychic wing over at wraith just for me... It'll have nice padded rooms. Cheers

    Welcome

Yeah, I'm sure its norse. The idea is that it was a dishonor to lose any of your gear in combat (similar to the greeks in that respect), so it was essentially a statment that no one would take it away from you, even if you were dead, it would then be used to carry you back home on.

    Welcome

Hey there. I think I got the sig straightened out... Just testing. Thanks oban... I liked it too. If you're looking for something similar, just read Beowulf. It's got lots of lines like. That one actually didn't come from there. A friend of mine read it somewhere, can't remember what text. It's now what we say before picking fights in pubs... usually with each other AshSpear I got from the norse as well. Ishtar is a babylonian goddess of war. Mythology has deep resources for anything warlike. Cheers [ 12-12-2001: Message edited by: AshSpear ]
