  1. Explorers and Traders are not the same as the other castes! In EverQuest there was a word for it. It was factions. Each caste is evaluated separately by the AI as a threat. While raiders will almost always attack traders, they won't always attack explorers or diplomats. Diplomats and explorers can go a lot of places other castes can't. As Terran/Mil, the majority of the galaxy is hostile to me. As Terran/Dip, the majority is neutral. If I needed someone to hand deliver an ultimatum to the Gammulan High command, I'd send a diplomat. No one else would make it alone. Explorers are going to be very handy to fleets as independent scouts, gathering intelligence on each others' actions, and diplomats will be very useful negotiating treaties and settling disputes between fleets, nations, and individuals. When Multiplayer comes around, expect explorers and Diplomats to be in high demand. So lets hear no more of the "useless caste" talk. In single player, there may not be tons to do as these castes. So don't play them. In a few months, that'll all change, and those people you have used those months to explore how the other race/castes react to them will have the advantage.
  2. I'll hold him, who'll hit him? We've got him, boss. Go take your vacation.
  3. If you go to the downloads page, under Battlecruiser 3000AD downloads, and download the appendix, you'll find the answers in weapons.pdf. I gues this info didn't make it into the new version of the appendix.
  4. Well, I haven't looked at the GBS-II system yet, but based on what I've heard, and based on GBS-1, I'm guessing that there are no caste specific abilities. However, you could easily script things for explorers or colonists to do using GBS-II. For example, you could create ruins models using 3d studio, insert them into the game at random locations, and put artifacts in them. Happy treasure hunting for your explorer. You could create a fledgling colony on a far flung world, and grant experience for every time a colonist ferries its capacity of guests from Galcom HQ to the new colony. You could create a high level meeting between two nations that requires a diplomat as an arbitrator(sp?) that leads to a Diplomat becoming embroiled in a high stakes game of intrigue, with nothing less than interstellar war hanging in the balance. These are but a few ideas of things you can do with the GBS-II. Personally, I can't wait to try my hand at scripting myself. [ 11-27-2001: Message edited by: Badgerius ]
  5. That which does not kill you, makes you smarter.
  6. quote: Lets put it this way. Unless you are really good, and your crew have been eating their Wheaties regularly, you don't stand a chance against an AI level 80 adversary, let alone 100 You know, a game developer (Mr. Wing Commader, wassizname...Roberts?) once said that in one-on-one combat, no AI could stand up against a human opponent. I guess he's in for a bit of a surprise...
  7. Prime's spread out from Europe to BC, so I wouldn't worry about time zones. As for participation, as long as you post from time to time, and are interested in contributing to Multiplayer when you do have time, you're welcome in Prime. I know other fleets have more stringent rules for participation, but I'll let them comment on their own rules. [ 11-27-2001: Message edited by: Badgerius ]
  8. Actually, Bond is an assassin. If you read the original books, the 00 unit was the assassin's division. Only in the movies did they become the...err...ummm...save the world division. Fendi, did you play Privateer 2? How about the Ser Lev Arris look? I think that would suit. [ 11-27-2001: Message edited by: Badgerius ]
  9. I know the game's only just out, but I find that 6 nights of being up long after midnight playing BCM is starting to get to me. Especially since I have to get up at 7am each morning... Anyway, you know it's time to take a break from BCM when: You start seeing ship damage FX before your eyes at work. You think that it might be nice to take a vacation in the jungles of Actis IV. You begin thinking that the Terran/Colonist ship which has been following you through the last 3 jump points may contain Insurgent spies. When taking out the trash, you look up to see if you can spot GalCom HQ You don't know what the real date is, but you know to the minute when your last saved game was in game time. You beam down to a planet to practice with your wristlaser, so that its accuracy will improve You're surprised when you look in a mirror that you look nothing like the MCommander or FCommander Model/Image You begin referring to your car as "OC1" You begin calling bags of chips "nutripacks" I'm sure you guys can do better. Have at Ye! (God I need sleep!)
  10. Check out Music of Bablyon 5 at http://www.musicofb5.com for some awesome remixes which sound great in BCM.
  11. If you are an explorer, go explore. Go forth and survey the surface of Sygan, and start naming landmarks. Come back to the forum and say, "Look, I found a beautful fiord at coordinates XX North by YY West. It's just gorgeous at sunset, and I mined Iridium there. I've named it "Zuul Inlet" after myself. Or maybe you've found a partially frozen sea on the boundary between arctic and temperate on Kystar, and you name it the "Ross Ice Shelf" after a similar feature on Earth. When MMOG comes, fleets and corporations will be building cities on those worlds. And if you've scouted out beautiful spots on every planet and moon in this and the up-coming add-on universe, then you can make a pretty penny showing them exactly where to build. Some day, there may be a bustling metropolis in Zuul Inlet, and it will no doubt be called "Port Zuul"
  12. Personally, I'd like to see a shuttles power cell deplete much faster if it's towing something. It shouldn't take more than 3-4 jumps to get to a station if you're in trouble. Maybe limit a shuttle to 5 jumps while towing. Just a thought.
  13. Yeah, I was so surprised I didn't take any pot shots at the shuttle. Its shields would have been down, with the tractor beam enabled.
  14. Despite rumours to the contrary, Prime is not the most numerous fleet, by any stretch. That honour goes to Orion. What Prime fleet does have, though, is variety. If you're not sure what you'd like, consider Prime Fleet. We've got 4 stations to choose from as starting locations, plus opportunities in the 1st Orbital Marine Battalion, the 1st Space Marine Battalion, and a fledgling Logistics Wing, which would be responsible for cargo operations within Prime. Because we've got so much ground to cover, we're always in need of commanders to fill our ranks. Squadron members can pilot the cruiser of their choice, while squadron leaders and above can pilot carriers, if they so choose. So, if you're interested in doing everything that BCM is capable of, consider Prime Fleet. Interested individuals can contact Prime's Personnel Officer, Remo Williams, at [email protected] or myself at [email protected] [ 11-26-2001: Message edited by: Badgerius ]
  15. Well, I've been trying out my gro/po skills and things have not gone smoothly! I'm in orbit around Krystar, about 150 km out from the surface, and I decide to try a limited engagement. I've got 2 Mk1 interceptors in good shape (the other 2 are in the body shop) so I plot SAD waypoints in a small city (not a base, but a city, with less bad guys in it), with a repeat actions waypoint away from the base to give them a chance to recover before going in again. Then I march 9 marines down and myself (of course) down to the transporter room, and launch the fighters. I also launch a probe, so I can keep track of what's going on in space while I'm running around down there. Just as I do so, a Sentry and an Aestrom enter the region. They approach the station and launch SF marines just as my fighters hit dirt. The machine grinds to a halt. Down to about 5 FPS. (Probably hadn't turned everything off before I launched BCM). Anyway, I couldn't control the CC because I'm in the transporter room, so I cloak. Then I discover that you can't transport while cloaked (I think, there may have been other things going on as well). By now, the fighters are screaming bloody murder, and they're not in very good shape, so I call them back. By the time they get back, the SF marines have about killed each other, and the frame rate came back up to normal. Against my better judgement, I decide to press forward with the attack, I throw some medpacks in the transporter, and beam down on the outskirts of the city. Wow. It's dusk, the sky is golden, and there's a beautiful city stretched out in front of me. However, the marines, who were supposed to go into SAD mode and destroy anything they see, are just standing there. Ok, I fire up TacOps, and see they have HOLD orders. No problem, I give some of them SAD orders, and some orders to defend me. As I'm doing so, the first enemy marines arrive. They start firing on my marines, who, lacking orders, haven't moved yet. To my surprise, the marines didn't return fire when fired upon. So I get the orders in, and return to first person mode. As was previously mentioned, Friend/Foe detection is difficult in FP. But I managed, as enemies tended to be facing towards me, while my guys generally had their backs to me. I shot quite a few guys, and was running low on ammo, so I turned to head back towards my supplies. I turned just as an enemy shuttle was lifting off, my cargo in tow. I watched it head back to its landing pad and land. So, I heading for a supply point. I got there, and started loading up. That's when they got me. All in all, a wonderful experience. Especially when you look up to see enemy fighters streaking overhead.
  16. I'm not sure if the link on the fleets page is up to date, so for information on Prime Fleet, check out www.primefleet.com We are always in search of commanders.
  17. Just how deadly is an enemy with an AI of 100? The AI is already creepily smart, setting traps and coming to each other's rescue. What's a "super genius" enemy like?
  18. Fuel Efficiency. Better engine means more jumps to the tank.
  19. Well I do own one, but I bought an NVidia specifically for BCM, and installed the Voodoo on my wife's machine. But no, I had no intention of badgering you to fix voodoo's drivers. I'd like to see MP as soon as possible
  20. Nothing. It's correct. But since the cards do have issues which aren't going to be fixed, I was surprised to see them on the box under supported cards. If this is not a misprint, I have no issue with it. I know that the box art was changed at the last minute because of MP not being in the game "out-of-the-box." I thought that is was possible that an error had crept in during the post-gold madness, and thought I'd draw your attention to it, just in case. But since it is not an error, and since you do spell out the driver issues on the box, then there is no problem. Sorry to bother you about it.
  21. No I didn't. I read it very carefully. It is clear about the driver issues. I just wasn't sure that you meant to put those cards there. If you did, then no problem. Close the thread.
  22. On the requirement section on the box, I noticed that it says that 3dfx Voodoo 3, 4, and 5 are supported. Was this intentional? It also says that only cards with DirectX 8 are supported. I really have no issue, since I no longer have my voodoo 3 card in my machine, but I thought I'd draw your attention to it, since it may have been unintentional.
  23. Longbow 2: Sitting in a blackhawk, at night, with nightvision off. The night is bright and there's some light fog nestled in the valley. I'm cowering behind some buildings because I've stumbled into a major attack on my lines. As the enemy tanks come over the ridge, artillery, fighters, and attack helicopters from both sides begin firing, and AAA and SAMs open up as well. None of it is being fired at me, since I'm both hiding and not a threat. Tanks are blowing up not 30 meters from my position, and a building to my left gets wiped out by a stray artey shot. An apache goes down to my right, and a Mig is augering in on the ridge. Finally, the smoke clears (literally) and there's not an enemy in sight. I start forward to continue my mission, and fly over the blasted hulks of both friendly and enemy machines. And that was BEFORE I crossed into enemy territory!
