  1. I don't think it's difficult to believe that mankind will still be stuck in a universe of newtonian physics for the indefinite future. And if we're not I would at least like some sort of explanation beyond "it's just a game". I mean, we've had an explanation for faster than light travel within the context of the game. Why did we get this and not an explanation for the basic flight characteristics of the craft? I don't really have a problem with the physics model in use, other than the fact that ships can stop on a dime (I imagine all of my crew are smashed to a pulp from deceleration and are instantly cloned by the ships computer).

  3. quote:Originally posted by ParadoxX013X: Now that I think about it who in there right mind would want the job or creating and rendering the interior of an of those large ships in the sim? Oh and forget about an ornital or planetary starbase. How or better yet where in the world would you start, at the turbolifts? It created a nightmare just thinking about it. Nick "Paradox" Parker I dunno..level design is loved by many and just look at the many games out there that have tons of well defined maps. Tribes and Tribes 2 come to mind at this point specifically because of it's sci-fi concept and because the interiors of its bases would work great for BCM. You may be bored designing craft and base interiors, but I doubt many would be. And just think of what it would add to the game..
  4. This will probably indicate my "newbieness"..but who's Resnig? From the commentary here he's beginning to sound a lot like Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf.
  5. Hey I just joined Orion but as the website is not fully functioning I'm having a difficult time determining exactly what it is I need to do to "graduate" from Cadet status. Any advice? [ 12-19-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  6. I guess all the regulars can't stop playing long enough to answer my question. A new point of confusion for me: the manual states on page 22 "When it first enters orbit, the probe will announce the name of the planet or moon." But there doesn't seem to be any way to tell a probe to enter the atmosphere or orbit a planet or moon. So now it appears as if I really must have my CC or at least AE in a shuttle or fighter fly down within the planet's atmosphere so I can locate any other crafts which may be on its surface. Again this is all fine with me, but I'd really like to know if this is the best and only way. Thanks.
  7. Update after having spent a few more hours with TACOPS: Well it seems as if I can only use the "Zoom To" function to quickly locate my support crafts on a planet's surface if my CC is within the atmosphere of the planet. I guess this is the way it's supposed to work. If my CC is in space even just 150KB away from the planet I can't use "Zoom To" on the surface of the planet within TACOPS. This is also the case if I have sent a shuttle down to the surface of the planet and also if I have launched a probe in earth's sector of space. Does anyone's mileage vary?
  8. I completely agree with Soback on this. But is it true that NPC ships have the advantage of being able to repair even though their main computer is destroyed? I haven't played enough to know for sure, but if so, I would think this should be changed.
  9. Thanks for the assistance. Of course I am using the "Observe" to view the surface of the planet. And it's OK with me if you have to send a shuttle or probe down to the surface of the planet to Zoom To the mining drone, but the VCF seems to indicate that you should be able to "Zoom To" a support vehicle on the planet's surface if your CC is in the same "space region" as the planet. So again, I just want to know how it's supposed to be done; am I supposed to send a probe or shuttle to the surface of the planet in order to then be able to Zoom To bases and support craft on the planet or should I be able to do this by simply having the CC in the "same space region as the planet"?
  10. quote:Originally posted by SailorX Network: Commander we need more firepower! USE THE OTS and OTO!!!!!! RID THIS GLAXAY OF THESE PEST!!! NO ONE STANDS IN MY WAY OF MY GOALS! UMHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Are you writing a sequel to ALL YOUR BASE? If so, I like it!
  11. The VCF says: "You will no longer be able to use Tacops to zoom-to any space region that do not contain the CC, the AE or a probe. Similarly, planet regions are viewable if the CC is in the same space region as the planet; otherwise the zoom-to object procedure does not work - making it possible to lose support units on a planet. Some were using this exploit to view regions they had support units in even though there was no probe there." The thing is, my CC is in the same space region as the planet in question (Earth). In fact I hypered to just within 150KM (simulated orbit). Perhaps I need to enter the atmosphere with my CC? I'm guessing that there is something obvious I'm missing as it seems no one else is experiencing a problem with this. Am I supposed to send a probe down to each planet I send support units to? Other than this one thing I'm experiencing true bliss with this incredible simulation. [ 12-14-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  12. I posted this to the newbie forum but it wasn't getting a response. I'm beginning to think it may not be a newbie question as I think I've tried everything. If someone can try this I would appreciate it. OK I have deployed a mining drone and a shuttle nearby. I cannot figure out how the "Zoom To" button on the right side of TACOPS is supposed to be used. I click on it, then click Support Craft (or similar) and then select either my shuttle or drone from the list but nothing at all happens. Yet if I manually find the drone and hover over it, the default option of "Zoom To" is shown and when I click it actually does "Zoom To" it. Thus I am assuming that this "Zoom To" icon in TACOPS can be used in a similar fashion to locate support vehicles. UPDATE: I've been using this "Zoom To" function of TACOPS in space and it works as I thought it would. Very convenient. Just wish I could get it working on planets and moons. Hopefully I'm just missing something here. Thanks [ 12-14-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  13. Gustavo..I believe what you are describing has been covered here in the forums before and is a harmless anomaly. It should be corrected shortly but seems to have proven elusive.
  14. Actually I think the graphics are a little too good. Any chance BCM can go full text mode? It would be a lot easier to code BCM Online if it was a Sci-Fi MUD
  15. I also can't find answers to these very good questions. I like doing things the hard way as well so that alternative solutions are available to me later..
  16. I understand the "dark side of the moon" concept. What I don't understand is why the surrounding starfield goes so dark as well..that seems to imply that our own Sun provides illumination to all other stars!! (Copernicus rolls in his grave). Unless I'm just having a video problem
  17. MR-Paris: I also do not see the point of your post..and stop speaking in tongues..
  18. "Reading Derek's soapbox on this topic, especially the section of it that talks about bringing a machine to its knees with too many crafts on screen, my only thought was "OPTIMIZE THE CODE!". Heck, if Freespace 2 can have massive battles without impacting framerate, I'm sure BCM can be tweaked to do the same. Falcon 4 is every bit as complex a game as BCM, and it's got very nice graphics and detail." Ha! Someone is using Falcon 4.0 as an example? Are you not aware that support of Falcon was dropped before it was fully playable due to the fact that it was too complex and the publisher decided it wasn't worth the effort? BCM is doing a lot more behind the scenes than Falcon ever did. Freespace2 doesn't have much going on behind the scenes at all which is why it can look pretty. From what you have stated it's apparent that you haven't even played BCM.
  19. Thanks for the help. I figured out the problem I had with targeting my mining drone on the surface of any planet or moon using the "Zoom To" utility of TACOPS. Apparently there needs to be a shuttle within the atmosphere of the planet or moon or nothing happens when you click the drone under the "Other" category. As soon as the shuttle reaches planetfall I can target it no problem. I did read the VCF and the following may apply..but I'm just not sure: "The Tacops target filter has a new support units filter which includes all player units (including mining drones). Player units are now excluded from the other filters but are visible in priority and recently observed filters." UPDATE: I installed the unofficial 1.0.02 RC7 and it didn't help. I guess I should be posting this in the Troubleshooting forum.. [ 12-07-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  20. OK I finally managed to deploy and extract a mining drone. I experienced a little confusion when in attempting to return it to base I had a shuttle tractor it out of the atmosphere. Fun stuff! On a previous attempt an intruder made off with my shuttle and drone before I could launch it and took my pilot hostage. I'm wondering..would there have been any way to retrieve my crew memeber intact in this situation? He was a little damaged but not dead. I hypered to the Earth's Moon and attempted "moonfall". It was pitch black and I couldn't see a thing..not even the starfield. Is this supposed to happen? I understand the concept of "dark side of the moon"..but shouldn't the surrounding space be visible? I can't seem to be able to use the "Zoom To" TACOPS tool on the surface of a planet. Specifically..I can't find any way to quickly target my mining drone. Is it normal for a shuttle to refuse to launch until you exit TACOPS? Thanks for any help. [ 12-06-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  21. I've noticed that when creating a new game you can select a number of Asset Classes and Types. I.E.: you can start with a Super Carrier AESTROM. I'm not sure I understand why you would want to start with a lesser ship. Also does this mean that upgrading to a better carrier in mid-game is not possible? Also within the Tactical Computer, Loadout. I notice that there is a "Drone" loaded by default on each of my shuttles. I am assuming that this is not a mining drone as I've already tried to mine and was unable. If not, what is its purpose? Last question: since you apparently do not start with a mining drone or enough cash for one, what's the best non-combat method of acquiring enough to buy one? 22. quote:Originally posted by Tyrn: Correct, BCM is about suspension of reality just like every other game. How hard is it to accept that in 3000+ AD ships can stop on a dime? Good point. I guess it doesn't matter so much, however it does affect my dogfighting. I use the throttle wheel on my joystick and it's easy to accidentally come to a complete stop. It would be nice if you did not come to an instant stop unless your hit the number "0" key. Any opinions or workaround solutions?
  23. I agree that true realism regarding the flight dynamics would impair the gameplay. I'm in favor of "Star Wars" physics. However, you do not even in Star Wars see ships come to a complete and instantaneous stop from maximum speed.
  24. I'm not saying I want a true newtonian physics model. It has already been made clear by the SC that that concept is out. Maximum speeds are fine by me. I just think it would be a lot more realistic and enhance the gameplay if stopping wasn't so instantaneous. It's not like you have to do a lot of math to figure this out. It takes only a few seconds to get up to maximum so it should only take a few seconds to stop..but not 0.0000 seconds..that's just not right. SC: For the same reason that you decided it would be more realistic to make larger ships turn slower than smaller ships please look at this. (Hector..you've never taken a physics class have you?) [ 12-04-2001: Message edited by: Thermidor ]
  25. Are there any plans on making this a little more realistic? Or is this supposed to simulate the fact that every craft has a retro rocket capable of infinite force? Even if this were so you'd think the ship would tear itself apart trying to stop that fast. If there's a gameplay reason why this is so I'd like to hear it.
