    Surface Ops

This topic caught my eye I could possibly use a little help in this area from the veterans in here. Ground operations. - the scenario: Pack my crap and head for planet. Get there and blow up entire place (base I'm talking). Dogs, cats and everything. I take some damage and it cost me some money. Head back to some place to "rest up / fix up". Rest up takes Oh 5 hours or what ever. Return back to same exact place I blew up only X hours ago and it's all rebuilt. I have read the posts that say 3 or 4 hours (or something like that) are needed to rebuild these bases so I understand that is what it is. But I feel like a red ant trying to get out of a sand pit. I run and run but never get over the crest. I could repeat the same scenario over and over - same spot. How do you experience guys/gals keep up with this? Why do I do this or why do I want to do this? And what is the other 70 billion places for?? Simple math shows me I don't have to leave earth. I know of using GBS to modify the game, but so far I have used no cheats / modification. I'm one of those dude who likes to use up a game the way the creator designed it until I'm completely spent on the game. Then I use the mods to add a new twist later. Any suggestions or am I doing something totally wrong here? Maybe I'm just missing the point.??

    My Poor Assault

Captain: Gentlemen.. load up on all the missles you can pack away. We're going hunting. Marine: But boss.. I was looking at the fuel and we need.... Captain: You dribbling fool... just do what you are told. We need the room for missles, boys... just get the missles. Actually I just park way off from the base and let them come to me. I always back my ship up keeping my prey in front sites by using the after burner and reverse thrust to keep them about 1.5 to 3 clicks away. I pick them off like neighbors cats smoking everything around. Toggle EMS on and off to deal with incoming missles. Once the heat finally cools and the base is shot its wad on me, they stop coming. When all is quiet, I make kamakazi runs on the base (underside - and no missles, ok, maybe one once in a while for fun) until they throw out the white flag (watch the hull level). I shut down weapons, dock and smack the whimpering fools left over into sillypuddy. So far it's worked every time. The only time things go wacky is when someone else shows up for the party at the wrong time. If need be... I play chicken and run.
  3. I kind of have a similar problem so I'm putting it in this thread. If this should be somewhere else feel free to move/delete this. My post is more of a curiosity issue I guess. My problem differs slightly because I can't see any planets while in tacops (space). They are there and I can zoom in and "observe" them. But even prior to the final zoom before I click "observe", the planet is still the little square with no image. No bitmaps / textures.. Also when I zoom in on other ships to highest zoom level they too are still just little square boxes. Game functions completely normal so it's not an issue. I also know it originally worked a few "game hours" ago. I can confirm this by loading past saved games. Starting new games also makes them come back. I also own two computers with different graphics cards (Voodoo3 and Diamond330) and the results are identical if I load the "saved" game with the problem on either system so chances are it's not system related. I'm not too concerned about it and am too far into the game to want to start over for something that is only cosmetic. My reason for posting is merely curiosity to find out if anyone else has seen it?; Has anyone else fixed it?; Or most importantly.. do I have a configuration / masking set somewhere I don't know about?? Maybe I switched something by accident somewhere along the way. I'm assuming not because I kind of remember about when it happened. One day I fired up a game I knew I had saved it while parked outside Mercury. But when I fired up the game, the image was earth. At first I thought I had loaded the wrong game. But closer observation showed the label as Mercury. So I tacop'd to other regions (by way of probes already in place) and noticed every planets images were earth, but had correct labels. So I decided to shut down the game / computer and restart everything. Fired up again showed no "multiple" earths. But what I didn't notice at that time was there was no "anything" as it is now. So somewhere in there is when they went away, but didn't notice until some time later. 2.09 released over 2.08 on 2.0 cdrom map pack never screwed with cheats chiz

    New interface shots.

Geesh.. guys, gimmie a break! I sure liked SC's answer better than you two. I wasn't nit-picking. I was simply asking a question about the ONE thing in the game I find frustrating. I'd rather be out blowing stuff up and living/exploring in that vast empire than be in dock waiting for the numbers to hit target value. And SC's answer was more than suffice and I have no problem with what the next game's interface will be. I too await the arrival of BCM and plan on being a long time fan. SC... I know about the "hold the mouse" deal.. and you did hit my question dead square... that was what I was asking. Thanks. And I will also assume that by the tone of your response you took NO insult to my question. I was just using a little humor trying to make fun with what I would prefer. The current method IS more than adequate. Please send the other two clowns to the airlock for a while.

    New interface shots.

Question: Seems as if you have done a whole heap'n lot of work "under the hood" for these interface screens and yet kept the familiar look and feel to it all. My question is  will we still have to abuse our mouse button to make quantity exchanges between cargo bays, sales / purchases, etc.? I've always found that very frustrating and am hoping for a "click and type value" combined with a "dump all of that one item" type interface. This would also include the "repair" (engineering) screens. Kind of a "Just repair my whole freek'n ship now b'cause I don't care what it cost!" button.

    very bad - read

Laguna, Maybe you have a virus?? They can be nasty and do goofball things to your system...
  9. Thanks guys.. I took your advice SC about upgrading to final 9. I did a complete new fresh everything... EP's at zero again. I don't know how I missed the final ver. I have grabbed every patch while it was still smoking. Guess I got confused about RC2 and final. Oh well. Anyway... just to let you know, my earlier problems seem to be gone. No more 20 second delay after launch. I do see a short one.. maybe 1 to 2 seconds just like you said there would, but not bad at all. Actually it didn't bother me before... How quickly we go from "top end" system to "bottom end". I've notice every time the fan goes bad... it's about time to build a new system. Time to jam some more $100's in thru the floppy slot I never use any more...that should do it. As for all the "sleepy heads" watching stags in deck 1, I guess Mother Teresa showed up somewhere on board cause they don't seem to be hanging out there anymore either. It's ok... she's making me look good... I've just moved up to Commander "Grilled" cheese sandwich. Oh.. almost back to 5000 EP's... he he. Really enjoy your game SC.. thanks. Kids hate it though... they can't use the puter when I'm home now.
  10. Hi all.. I've been playing BC for about 7 / 8 months learning the game little by little. Haven't wandered much out of Sol but have on occasion. Got the mining down, the tacops fights down, trading, etc. Blew up some towns in a few places and did some marines / interceptors / ATVs.. you know the scoop. Haven't taken any stations out or anything like that.... yet. I hang out on this forum nearly every single day (two / three times sometimes) and read, read, read. I continue to "patch up" every time the main man rips us off another version. I currently am running the latest 2.09rc2. This should give you some idea of my experience to help you help me. I have noticed a couple things I don't seem to be able to get a grip on and am sure someone out here knows what I'm doing wrong. 1. Since the latest patch (loaded as fresh BC CD-ROM 2.0, then 2.0 to 2.08, then 2.09rc2 - twice did this cause of these problems... ) I notice my system freezes for 20 sec. or so then continues as normal. No noticeable problems with the game. This little mini-freeze happens directly after returning to bridge after launch from a Spacestation. If this is not to be normal... I will chalk it up to a bungholed patch and give it all another twirl with some new fresh downloads. Running a 200Mhz pent., diamond viper 330, 64meg. 2. As normal.. the "fatigue factor" drops on my crew over time. But.. I don't seem to be able to get them to "rest up". I have tired some of the tricks seen on these posting such as blasting a shuttle or my own BC then going in for repairs to lap some time. (Actually I've found just driving the BC headlong into Galcom spacestation with shields at 25% works just dandy. And the interesting surprise of driving your BC in dead center of the spacestation is a real trip .. literally as you get warped off to some null space never to return.) Anyway.. when I return from repairing, my crew is worse off than when I went in. In fact.. they are all at 100% "fatigued" except for the top main head dudes. I docked with them (FF) at 70 / 80%. And.. after re-launching they are all hanging out in "deck 1 aft corridor" with half a dozen wandering into the galley for chow. All of them have a life factor of 98% or better but boy are they tired. I have the nutripaks, vacpaks, medpaks, combat kits, medicine and any other thing I can think of available. But I'm obviously missing something here... what is it? Are there stag films being shown in deck 1 and these boys just don't know when to quit or what? No wonder they are exhausted. I can't wait til BCM comes out just so I can wonder in there myself and see in person. And the place must be huge every freakn person on board except my first officers are in there. I seem to have less authority as commander than a cheese sandwich with this crew. 3. A few of my marines when transported or dropped off by shuttle seem to have been given Tabasco sauce enemas. They move around on the surface faster than my interceptors. Ive seen postings on this but somewhere along the way thought this was not an issue anymore. I assume they are jetpacking around but how do I tell? Or are they just pissed off at me cause they aint back in the ship watching the stags flicks with everyone else in the deck 1 movie theater? If Im doing nothing wrong and these things shouldnt be happening, Im ready to flush it all zap me some new downloads and start a new. Ive just been a little reluctant because the 5000 or so EPs Ive earned is a major landmark for me yeah ya.. I know, you guys are all laughing. Cause I flushed my EP's with every patch that comes along, that is as far as I've made it. Just call me commander cheese sandwich. Thanks for your help. chiz
