Bush or Gore...

I have to agree with Ron's post.

For one thing, I'm more concerned about social security and health care benefits, more than anything else. Most people work too hard, all their lives, and simply can't retired in a manner that is consistent with their tax contributions etc. Its pathetic.

And as for the health care in the US? Its a fraudulent scam that only insurance companies, lobbyists and attorneys, benefit from.

As for guns. Well, if someone wants a gun, law or no law, they're going to get it. Its that simple. Growing up in the UK (being half-Brit myself), guns are frowned upon. But of course, all the restrictions did nothing to lower the gun induced crime rate.

I just took a visit to the website Whisper pointed out for the Socialist party. Here's a few things that makes me hope to God a socialist never gets elected:

quote:

In its 2000 platform, the Socialist Party calls for greater worker rights and public control of resources, a minimum wage of at least $12, a maximum wage, stronger environmental protections, socialized health care, free childcare and eldercare, free higher education, steep reductions in military spending, abolition of the CIA and NATO, equal rights for gays, increased mass transit, electoral and campaign-finance reforms, support for animal rights and organic farming, and decriminalization of marijuana.

My God, who in the hell would want to abolish our major source of intelligence? Not too mention cut the military which protects our land (we'd need it more if we don't have said intel to work with). A minimum wage of $12??? Can anybody guess what happens when everybody has more money? You guessed it: Price inflation. The value of the dollar drops when there are more dollars in circulation. As for a maximum wage, that's just completely anti-democratic. The United States is supposed to be the land of opportunity, not the land of limited opportunity. Just for the record I have no opinion on equal rights for gays or campaign finance reform. Decriminalizing pot would be dangerous, however. You'd take an already flourishing drug trade and make the US open season for any drug lord who wants to set up shop.

quote:

...and socialism really means democratic socialism.

Err, socialism means socialism. Democratic socialism means democratic socialism. Would we want a plain moron in office? wink.gif

quote:

A true democratic socialism would control the wealthy more.

Control the wealthy, the wealthy skip town. Their tax dollars would be entered into a democratic country's revenue and we'd lose the massive influx of cash from them. A lot of people (mostly democrats) jump on the republican party over their proposed cuts for the wealthy. Well, I have news for everyone here. Those people pay more than 60% of their earnings in taxes. Then, they flock to other countries where the taxation isn't so high forcing the US to lose out on those dollars. 40% of a lot is still a lot. And, when these people move away, so follows their businesses that employ people like you and I. High-profile careers would be less inviting due to an imposed restriction by a so called free government on how far one can take one's self. Enter the "brain-drain" factor.

quote:

The powers that be lie a lot, and they own much of the media.

If that were true, how come we had such highly publicized negative press about the scandalistic White House? Sounds like someone else is lying. Can anyone else think of a socialistic government that fell partially due to such lies?

quote:

When they say unemployment's low, that's because they've changed the way that they figure unemployment.

I can honestly say from a labor manager's standpoint that unemployment is so low, it's actually hurting our (my company's) ability to find and hire new workers. This is due to policy dating all the way back to the Nixon administration.

quote:

I just heard the other day that one out of 100 American children is sleeping on the street.

Yeah, right.

quote:

Health care right now is a horrendous thing in the United States, where people can make money off of someone else's poor health.

Agreed. But at what cost would a socialist government implement change? Taxation, likely. Serious cuts in our nation's defense budget, thereby rendering us no longer the world superpower? Again, likely. I believe that a choice should be given to the public, such as privatized health care or a government subsidized and regulated system. A system is already in place for military veterans, so it need just be adapted to work for the general public. And, not everyone would want the government to control their health care, so the insurance industry would likey see a sharp drop but not an abolishment. As a result, private health care would become more inexpensive to retrieve the customers that went into the government controlled system.

quote:

The one issue is putting people before profits.

I'm sorry, but my wife and I have worked our asses off to get where we are. I came from a lower-class family and now live in an upper middle class neighborhood due to hard work that allowed me to profit. I would be greatly offended if someone from my same situation were afforded the same luxaries as myself without having to pull the same weight.

quote:

One of the major reasons why the Socialist Party supports our candidacy is simply because we're not afraid to say the "s-word."

Oh, gee, that gets my vote right there.

Well, my rant is complete. I'm not saying that our government is perfect; obviously it's far from it. But this country was founded on principles which a socialistic government would surely change. The opportunity to distinct ourselves would be all but eliminated. In this country, hard work reaps great benefits so more people are inclined to work more vigilantly. In a socialistic government, we're all just another person with a net worth that must be monitored.

-He also opposes the death penalty. It's too easy! I say make prisons more like prisons should be. Overcrowding and early release? Take those words and definitions out of the dictionary! I say adopt the Japaneese method of prison control. Be good today, I feed you today! Steal something worth 1 cent American and it's a prison sentence. Makes one think about his actions BEFORE he does it!

Rattler is exactly right. I can tell you all from first hand experience that prison IS too easy for inmates. I know..I work at a federal prison. They get there own little air conditioned room that they share with a celly, have 3 square meals a day (and they still steal food from food service), get a GED from education, even get paid for working! Heck, it's like a paid vacation for them. If you guys could spend a week in a prison working with the staff, I'd be willing to bet it'd turn your way of thinking of prisons. It really ticks me off about these "bleeding heart liberals" politicking for better rights for these thugs just so their time will go easier. Bullhocky! They committed a crime, they knew the consequences, therefore they should serve their time without any rights. They oughta be locked down in their cells 24 hours a day with a bagged meal 3 times a day. About 70% of these guys will be back when they get released because they'll just get out and do the same crime again. And a lot of these guys are pieces of the biggest #$!% you'd ever seen in your life. And this is first hand information here. That's one of the many reasons why the bureau is building so many facilities.

Well, enough, I'm off my rant...time to get back on the subject.

Its an old, old beef against socialism, and all that's ever been said has been said. You asked for a poll, I give you poll. Sorry I got evangelical, I'll take that first URL off now.

Look into history and what Marx wrote, that's all I'll say to defend my beliefs. I have no intrest in stirring up dust here. All that's been said either way has already been said, and I'd hate to screw up your poll just to get into an old debate that would be mostly mud-slinging.

This will be the last time I post on this thread.

I say have the different parties fight it out! Have a political "Rage in the Cage!" They could even have their own theme songs as the different poloticians walk down the walkway to the ring! Whoever has the most brawns would be the President - and get to wear the Championship Gold Belt! Granted, this has many downsides, but hey, wouldn't it be fun to watch!

...

Ventura for President!!

P.S. aramike, I just paid $2.19 for gas today. Friggin' rediculous.

Whisper, it was nothing personal so please don't take it as such. A good political debate is always welcome, IMO. People needn't agree on everything nor must they force their beliefs on others. But we still can give our views to others. Take it as that; my views. I don't expect your or anyone else's to change simply because of how I feel. That's the beauty of a country in which freedom of speech can be practiced by any citizen who wishes.
