The Orion Lounge on the Orion Starstation....

Description:The centerpiece of this dark room is a strange bar that glows of its own light. It is long and circles around so that it has no start and no end. Within this circle are many strange machines reaching up to the ceiling for creating any kind of strange drink imaginable. A stocky man works the machines and serves the customers extremely efficiently. He is skilled with just about every drink type imaginable. There are many seats in the room, booths placed up against the walls on each side, light dimly because of the distance from the glowing bar. Now that you've given the room a look over feel free to descend the platform and enjoy your time here.

Heres the start of this place i'd like to see some rping going on here with the Orion fleet or anyone that stops by. smile.gif

A tall male in GALCOM uniform enters the room & saunters up to the bar. His uniform looks worn, but servicable & bears the insignia of Prime Fleet on the chest patch & the shoulder patch shows 5 stars arranged in a cross pattern.

"Whisky, thanks barkeep."

The stranger nurses his drink as he slowly relaxes his shoulders. Must have been a hard cruisee.

I won't be posting often, but I should be able to keep up to date on this thread.

Battle scarred from a skirmish with Insurgents enroute from a patrol scan in Lyrius, Karl sauntered over to the already crowded bar.

As he walked over, some off-world personnel turned their heads in recognition as a few marines wearily gestured a salute.

Barely acknowledging the recognition, he uttered a subtle ...as you were, people and edged into a seat made vacant by an obviously alchohol plastered marine, in a hurry to make himself scarce. As the young marine disappeared into the crowd milling around the bar, Karl settles down in his seat and beckons the bartender. ...glass of icecold H20 please he uttered; his voice barely audible above the din of bad techno music, slurred conversations and the occasional hollering as some hapless fool tried to outshout everyone else in an attempt to render his speech audible.

Turning around, he gazes at the people in the room, wondering how many gave a toss about the conflict GALCOM was currently involved with in Procyon and whether or not they had really thought about their chances of returning to this bar in one piece, let alone, alive, sometime in the not too distant future.

He had his own cross to bear, this weary man. The life he had known, the corp he served since an early age, now seemingly disjointed and ripped from inside by political backbiting and budget cuts. With the upcoming budget review and hints of the spending cuts for the new MK1 Battlecruiser carriers, he just wondered how long before others defected or just plain upped and left, to become traders, or worse, insurgents.

The bartender returned with his glass of water, breaking his concentrated silence, ..would that be all Commander?. Yes he muttered, as he raised the glass and took a sip, savoring every drop of the cool fluid.

As the glass came to rest on the table, he could barely make out a figure in his peripheral vision. Turning around to confirm his view, he could not believe his eyes....

Note: If we're all here, I guess we could have our characters talk to each other. So, for instance, Bosch could talk to me and when I post, I would respond back or something like that. Right now, there is a major skirmish in Procyon involving the Vesperons and the Empirians. We, as usual are in the middle of it. There are lots of Insurgent mercs operating in the area on the side of the Vesperons. The latest skirmishes involve keeping them outta there while at the same time, keeping the Vesperons at bay until something is sorted out.

Guest Commander Hamblin

Note: I like to do my stories in the first person, not the third person, if that's ok.

I walked slowly into the bar, trying to keep my head down. My performance out there for the last few weeks had been laughable. I had just come off a five month tour in Procyon and things were getting worse.

The Galatea had been assigned escort duty to a number of civilian freighters which were on trade runs through the system when a fight broke out between a Vesperon freighter and an Empirian transport.

The Vesperon freighter captain refused to listen to diplomacy, and the same went for the Empirian transport captain. They both said "We'd rather die than let those *******s carry on living." Or something to that effect. It was probably little more than a case of name calling which escalated when both ships decided to test out their illegaly fitted weapons systems (Just my luck that these two happened to be outfitted with weapons)

Suffice it to say, my luck seemed to turn sour during those last few weeks. The launch bay was offline throughout the entire time, thanks to some damned idiot system engineer messing up a repair job and severing one of the links in the landing bay computer.

Most of the freighters survived on that tour, but two of them crashed into each other (Engines got hit and sent them into each other), so I had to beam their crew aboard and put up with their damned whining till I got them to a friendly starstation.

And, to top it all off, the Empirian transport captain was suing Galcom because of damages to his ship which he claimed was caused by me when I didn't protect him. I had been told that I was not going to be protected in the courts by Galcom, since the budget was stretched already, and they couldn't afford a court battle. And it wasn't like my account was that big either, so I would have to hire some lawyer who could probably barely understand law.

The Galatea had come back to Orion starstation for a refit and repair. It also allowed the crew some rest time, for shore leave. Of course, the bill for the refit was landing right at the feet of yours truly.

I sat down at the bar and ordered the most alcoholic beverage I could think of. But, I had never had any experience with alcohols, so all I could order was a glass of water.

I turned around on the stool to see none other than Supreme Commander Karl Reines walking in. 'Oh sh*t.' I thought to myself. 'I hope he isn't here to talk to me about the law suit. Or my performance out there.'

I was about to make myself scarce when I noticed he was just sitting down to order a drink. 'Oh, good, maybe he doesn't know then. Or maybe he's toying with me. Nah, why would he do that? Oh god, a train of thought like this usually ended up horribly.' I thought miserably.

I saw another man, a Commander like myself, walking up to the bar, specifically to Reines. I hadn't seen this man before, he was new. His uniform was quite fresh, showing he had probably been recently promoted, and this might be his first command. Of course, I could never tell. Some commanders put on the air of being new on purpose, just so that when people underestimated them, in the field they turned out to be ten times better, with a lot of experience. And, I was a bad judge of character.

But, the very fact that he was walking up to Supreme Commander Karl Reines showed me that he was young and ambitious. "Sir i'd like to talk with you about the Procyon problem." I overheard him say.

That confirmed it. He was new. Only someone who had been recently promoted would want to talk with the Supreme Commander that badly, probably wanting to show off his skills in the hope of getting a promotion, or even getting to know the Supreme Commander in an attempt to become friendly with him, again in an effort for career advancement.

I had long ago given up on such foolhardiness. Trying to become friendly with a superior officer was stupid. They could tell when someone was just trying to impress them rather than actually wanting to become friends with them. Usually they shrugged it off. 'But, at least I'll get some entertainment out of watching the Supreme Commander shrug off this young officer'

I watched to see what would happen next...

...Commander Bosch indeed. Well, don't you salute a superior officer anymore? Karl said with an ever so subtle chuckle. ..as far as Procyon is concerned, its a mess. The Vesperons are trying to claim the region. The Empirians don't want that to happen for obvious reasons and we are stuck in the middle because we want any links built in the region to be multi-national controlled. So naturally, we are caught in the middle. And to make matters worse, the Vesperons are rumored to be using hired Insurgent allied mercs to further distabilize the region. And of course the Insurgents will take every opportunity to seek out GALCOM targets of opportunity. The worse case scenario is if the Syrions decide to get involved especially since they've made it clear that no links to Sarien will be allowed. Its bad enough that they've weathered to major wars with the Gammulans who attempted to build a link from Gamma-1 to Sarien. I already filed my report in which I confirmed the existence of Insurgent forces operating in the region. I suspect that several Battle Fleets will be dispatched to the area shortly under the Operation Procyon Entity banner. Like I said, this whole mess is getting out of hand and very soon, we'd be involved in yet another major skirmish that we have no business being involved in.

I heard the explanation of the situation by Reines and thought 'Well, here it comes, any second now he'll find some lame excuse and walk off. In fact, he might not even need an excuse, he's the Supreme Commander. But the new guy will swallow it with ease and go right back to his seat. Or, if he's really stupid, he'll try to follow him. Hehe, I hope he does that.'

I quietly sipped my water, waiting to hear the rest of the conversation...

I watched as the commander saluted and said "Sir, thank you for your input on the Procyon problem." before going back to his own table and resuming his drink.

'Ohhhh, damnit, I was hoping to see something.' I thought, slightly dissapointed. I was about to go back to my drink when I decided I should go over there and introduce myself. I thought about it for a moment before deciding to go over to offer to buy him a drink.

I approached his table and said "Hi. I'm James. James Hamblin. Captain of the Galatea. You know, you've got guts going up to the SC like that. Usually people avoid him, unless it's official buisness, or they're friends of his. You mind if I buy you a drink?"

I smiled back at the young man.

"Nice to meet you, Joseph. Oh, and by the way, if you're worried that could be your next Tour of Duty, you should be. The Galatea just got off a five month tour in Procyon and, believe me, it ain't no picnic out there. We've got nothing less than a shooting war. We've got Vesperons firing at Emprians, damned Insurgents helping out the Vesperons and, to top it all off, the Syrions could end up coming in, really pissed off.

"And you know what? Galcom is stuck right in the middle. Damnit, we've got enough problems without having to worry about these problems of other races, but both the Vesperons and the Empirians are Galcom members, and Galcom wishes for the system to be multi-national. Damn those beurocratic ass-holes. We should withdraw and let them kill each other, that's what I say."

I sat down and ordered a drink. "Anyway, like I said, if you are going out to Procyon, be careful. The Galatea is in refit because of everything that happened out there. She could spend the next few weeks in drydock, actually. Damnit."

I hated having to think of my ship like that. At least my crew was ok, I would hate to think what would happen if I ever lost them.

"Well, I've got some time off as well." I said, a little more cheerfully. The drinks arrived and I said "I took the liberty of ordering us a beer. I put it on my tab."

I took a sip before asking conversationally "So you new?"

I smiled a small smile. 'Four weeks, huh. So I was right.'

Aloud, I said "Well, four weeks isn't a lot of time to get to know your ship. Unless you've either had extensive combat experience or they're desperate, or both, you won't be sent into a conflict like the one happening at Procyon. They don't like sending in rookie commanders unless there is a shortage of manpower. But, I could be wrong.

"So, you say you've been on the Obenbone for four weeks? Have you been in drydock that whole time, or have you been in any missions? I only ask 'cos I would like to find out how much experience you have in the field."

I sipped the beer once more, letting the cool liquid flow down my throat. I didn't usually drink beer, preferring water or tea (Being of British heritage, I drank a lot of tea).

I was surprised to hear him mention his father and his father's father.

"So, both your father AND your grandfather served as Captain of the Obenbone? How did that happen? I doubt that Galcom generally gives it's ships to one family of officers to command from generation to generation, now do they? Or was your grandfather influential in Galcom?"

I would have liked to have heard the answer if I hadn't recieved a page over the PA system. "Commander Hamblin, you are needed in Fleet Commander Blades' office for debriefing immediately. Commander Hamblin, you are needed in Fleet Commander Blades' office immediatly for debriefing."

I sighed and got up. 'Well, time to face the music.' I thought. I turned to Bosch and said "Well, I would love to stay and chat, but I've got to go." I made my way through the slightly less crowded bar to the doorway. 'Well, here we go, the end of my career' I thought before stepping out into the corridor and walking to the turbolift.

As I watched the young commander wander off, I couldn't help but wonder how long he'd last out there. GALCOM has been on an aggressive recrouting excercise these past few months and now they were actually giving commanders with hardly any combat experience, ship command of their own. And they wonder why we're out of money. A fully fitted Battlecruiser costs billions of galcreds and yet, they would risk it all, just to have the numbers out there.

I beckoned the bartender and ordered another glass of water and looked at my watch. Still shaken from what seemed like a ghost in the crowd earlier, I continued looking around to see if I could see the familiar figure again. The intrusion by the young commander Bosch made me lose sight of what I was focusing on.

I guess word had already gotten around that I was here because the music had just gotten better. The speakers were now playing a symphony and funny enough, people seemed to be trying to whisper in order to keep their conversations private.

I looked at my watch again. Another 15 mins and its time for the commanders debriefing for the upcoming mission, back to Procyon.

[rp]The Comms Officer of the GCV Svoboda entered the room and headed for the bar, on the brink of emotional exhaustion after her long shift in Procyon. She attracted an amount of silent attention with her prescence, since she was tall and thin with long ginger hair and bright blue eyes. She was pretty, too. Not a supermodel, but certainly pretty enough to have had many a faux pas excused her over the years. She ordered her favourite drink of all time, lemonade and blackcurrant, before looking around for a familiar face. Normally she would be the life and soul of any party, but right now she wasn't in the mood to make any new friends. Her face brightened enormously as she caught sight of an old aquaintance. She took a sip from her newly arrived drink and headed over.

A number of surprised eyes followed her as before he could say a word she walked over to his table, put her drink on it, sat down next to him with a thump, and said with a broad smile,

"Hi Karl, I haven't seen you in years! How're you doing?"

During her five years as a secretary on Galcom HQ, she had never known him as Karl Reines, Supreme Commander of Galcom and most powerful military leader on the planet. She had known him as Karl, the nice man who worked a lot with her boss Jiri Bitbek, chief administrator of Galcom HQ at the time. [/rp]

You can 'jog your memory' of her by looking at her personnel file, here, SC. (If you want)

I was watching with amusement at a group of jarheads having a go at hand wrestling and thinking about the days when I was young, restless, full of life foolish, when, like the sound the stylus of a 20th century vinyl record player makes when dragged across the disc, my thoughts were interupted by the sound of her voice.

I actually jumped when I heard my name, her voice. Karen! I knew it was her. Never forget a face. It had been so long since I'd see her. That first and last date, if you could call it that, had been a disaster. From the sound of her voice, I wonder if she's forgiven me for dashing off in the middle of dinner and off to my latest crisis, with nary a commsmail back saying where I was. I couldn't. I heard that she had been re-assigned and I have been wondering what would happen if I contacted her. Now this. I had to run into her here, of all places. I must look like a wreck. Haven't shaved since yesterday and I was growing a subtle stuble to match my unkempt hair and equally creased uniform. I was in such a hurry to get off my ship and I guess a quick drink has turned into a chance encounter. Earlier this week, I thought I had heard her voice in a securelink channel onboard a vessel operating in Procyon. Can't remember the name of the craft now because they were not operating under my directive. If it was her, that would explain why she is here, the watering hole of the Terran Quadrant.

..h, h, hi Karen, long time no see. My, you look...uhm, great. Long time no speak; how have you been?

The doors to the Lounge slid open, and two men strode in slowly, sitting down at the nearest open barstools. Looking over at the bartender, Commander Benjamin Somerset ordered "Double brandy, straight." The man sitting next to him, Lt. Commander Shawn O'Malley ordered "Scotch, neat."

While the bartender was getting the drinks, Somerset looked over at O'Malley and asked "How long are those repairs going to take, Shawn?"

"Couple o' weeks, sair. They dinna have the parts for me ta get the repairs done in less than a week." the Chief Engineer replied.

As the bartender set the drinks down, Somerset said "Damn...", and took a sip of his brandy.

It had been his squadrons rotation in the Credian Quadrant, so they were the ones who had to do the intelligence gathering while this new conflict between the Empirians and Vesperons had broken out. And like every other time, the Swiftsure had ended up in the middle. With Insurgent mercs, and everyone shooting, there was no doubt that the ship would get away unscathed. But the 18 dead crew members were what really flamed Somerset. He wished he could get back at the Insurgent b******s that killed his crew.

Looking around the bar, Shawn said "I'll be damned...havena seen her in years..."

"Who?" Somerset questioned.

"Karen Hilliard. We coulda had a good thing, had she not gotten transferred to starship duty. Too bad...cause she's a pretty lass..." He looked down into his drink, and took a slow sip. O'Malley thought to himself Think I may go talk to her in a minute meself...

Somerset felt pity for poor Shawn. He hadn't ever had much luck with women. As he turned to look around the rest of the patrons, he noticed another man with Commander's insignia. And from his service stripes, an extremely young one at that. "Shawn, I'll be back," Somerset said as he walked over to the young man. He walked up and introduced himself. "Good evening, Commander. I'm Benjamin Somerset, Commander of the Swiftsure."

Chaos was somthing the recently promoted Fleet Commander was starting to get used to.

That said, Karl "Blades" Savage was more used to the day to day anarchy of commanding a BattleCruiser and was finding the transition from active command of a single ship to the running of an entire fleet somthing of a nightmare. However, the nightmare had started to abait in recent days, with the slow recall of active fleet members to HQ.

The recall was taking it's time, probably due to the fragmented deployment instructions from his predecessor being of an 'unusual' nature. In fact, it had taken the best part of a week to recall the more prominent fleet members let alone those on hot patrols in remote regions.

All this, however, was not really an issue at this time. The chaos of reorganising the fleet had been a minor inconvenience compared to his most recent problem, a problem that the good Commander Hamblin had just cheerfully informed him of.

"Who?" asked Blades once again.

"The supreme Commander, sir."

Fleet Commander Karl Savage once again nodded in a curious fashon at his unnoficial 2IC.

"And he's where?"

"GalCom lounge, sir." replied the recently debriefed officer.

The next few moments was somthing of a panic to Blades. He dismissed his officer, sauntered briefly through his nice new office and pondered a few opening thoughts to propose to the Supreme Commander.

Confident with these initial thoughts, he pulled a semi legal bottle of Empirian Ale from his 'Confiscated' stash and headed down to the lounge.

This was going to be ...... interesting.

A figure sat silently in the corner, blending in with the furniture of the tavern. Nothing had escaped his eyes and ears. He had immediately recognized the "Old Guard" and some of the new whelps as well. Some of these new commanders were but mere children, or so it seemed. He had thought that perhaps the youth of earth would have awakened to the reality of life, but with such a showing as this, it was clearly evident that Nothing had changed. Then a singular figure had gained his attention. It looked like him, but no way......By George, it WAS him! Old Karl himself! He hadn't been seen by these eyes in ....how many years had it been? The quiet figure smilled, only slightly though. This was, after all, THE ENEMY! The stranger slowly rose from his chair and non-chalantly walked past the Supreme Commander, gently brushing elbows as they passed. With that innocent brush, there had been a passing of technology. A tiny object, not worth much, but it was the action that had counted. The Stranger allowed himself a momentary thought. "Tag, You're it!" He continued out of the Tavern, pausing one last time to glance over his shoulder. Karl was speaking with another member of Galcom. A rather nice looking member at that! The stranger now hastened his footsteps, taking three more steps, turning the corner, and disappearing into the darkness of Orion Starstation. Only after having launched the P21 from the bay and in the freedom of open space did the Stranger reveal his findings on Orion Starstation. In a tight beamed transmission, fired directly towards Antis did the message speed. "Rattler has sighted Karl Reines in Orion Starstation!" "Insurgents beware!" The P21 jumped out of system like a runaway locomotive, pausing slightly to recharge it's Jump Engines, accelerating as she charged. One more jump and home free. The window opened and Rattler was gone. If there were any pursuits, they were gone now. Next stop Spectre, and Home!
