Console Vs. PC

Recommended Posts

Finally, Console vs. Pc activists have their own thread. This way we can keep the other topics intact to their theme. If you feel the need to digress about this issue in the other topics, just post it here and add the link to your other message.

Okay here we go, I'm gunna start off by making a big argument for Pc's that so far no one has mentioned about and that is EMULATION. I can play arcade games all the way down to the Playstation on my PC. Tell me what console system can do that. Let me tell you that games like Tekken3, Star Wars terras kasi for the Playstation and Conkers Bad Fur day for the N64 never looked , sounded or played better even on their target system. Now in the works are emulators for Ps2 and Xbox. Go here

EMULATORS

What console can do this? NONE. Sure some of you may argue the point of the many crashes and blue screens of death but that is a windows OS and/or Windows drivers issue not the actuall PC. But since Windows CE (console edition) and ME

(mobile edition) is creeping into everything and may one day be in all consoles I don't hold up any hope from consoles being free from this issue either.

What is the console's biggest advantage? Compatibility.

Any game made for a console WILL work on the console. The hardware is pretty much standard for all models of the same console. You don't have to worry about updating drivers or downloading patches (although it looks like some console games are getting that way!)

When I buy a new PC game, 9 times out of 10, it doesn't work until I go through an hour or more's worth of screaming, yelling, cussing and downloading..

When I buy a new console game, I put it in, turn the game on and sit down with the controller. It runs fine.

Another advantage: The couch.

Consoles are played on a television and are more conducive to relaxing play or even playing with friends, just add a control and grab a seat...whereas computer's require you to have one box and screen per set..then there's the hassle of getting the network set up properly (which never happens on the first try)...

What's the point of even comparing the two?

That's like comparing those idiot-proof cameras to pro-level 35mm SLRs. The onlything they really have in common is they both take pictures. With PC vs consoles, they both play games.

Thanks. I'm gonna cut your response and paste in a file. This way, I can simply regurgitate it wherever I see this stupid argument ensue.

Damn gamers. Nothing can ever be simple.

i can hit the screenshot key in a game, alt-tab, open a picture editor, convert it to a jpeg, transfer it to my server, and post about it on a website. once done, i alt-tab back in my game. Oh and winamp is playing internet radio, and I'm playinmg in a Crystal clear 1024x768x32, although i could play at a higher resolution, but the text becomes too small, although it stays sharp and clear.

Beat that.

i honestly don't care for what console i play my games on. they all are just platforms to play the game made for that platform.

games are games. it doesn't matter what we play them on.

There's one question I would like answered about the consoles. Who in hell hired that Drunken Camera Master!? You know how many console games this guy has ruined because the camera gets all over the place or just not in the right place and it always seems to happen at a critical moment. And with the console game ports to the PC the problem is just multiplying. I've played the new Indana jones game and that camera can either mean life or death. If you ever watch TechTv's X-play, they complain about that Drunken Camera Master too. . It's just one more console issue we PC gamers can live without.

I agree with this for the most part. If it's fun who cares?

It could be like the recent movie thread. You Love Good PC games but are not ashamed to dip into a mindless console game. But not all console games are mindless. Well crud. Don't know what to say.

The way I see it, a PC offers the ability to have real replay value titles... think Civilization.

I have yet to find a single console game that does that.

Good one Epsilon5. Also, patching to me is really a blessing, as it fixes, adds content, ect. Hey, just because you can't (for the most part) patch a console game, does'nt mean its perfect.

Also, where would all those wonderful mods be if we did'nt have pc games. And I won't even get into Multiplay, as there's no contest.

(p.s. The resolution on most T.V's suck, too many jaggies)

Long Live the PC.

I guess if you were born with a mouse in your hand , yes PC's are a panacea. However there are those of us who don't have hours to fiddle around with graphics fixes, patches ,etc..I love PC games but even with the help of my good friends in this community, even after buying a new rig JUST to play games on, and hours of dial-up downloads, there are still some games I can't play.

Recently I bought GTA:VC and rushed home to try it. The game crashed at the same point in the game everytime. Aware of my own PC shortcomings, I went to the Rockstar VC forums and found that a few other people had the same problem. I followed the advice of ,amping dowm the screen resolution, not loading the radio station, all types of suggestions. I down loaded updated drivers, nothing worked.About a week after the initial release date Rockstar released a patch to fix the graphical errors. Downloaded and applied and no dice. Finally I called on the trusty Grayfox, who knows a little about PC's alas he too bought a copy that wouldnt even boot up. He was fortunate to live somewhere he could return the game. In Pennsylvania no PC game can be returned after it is opened. I'm out fifty bucks.

I recently sold it to a friend who had no problem running it on his rig. Of course he is our IT specialist at work and was born with a mouse in his hand.

My meandering point is that when all runs smooth on a PC game aint nothin better. But when there are problems its no fun to me. I'd rather play a game than curse at my PC for hours-days. I know some will suggest get smarter learn more about your rig! I say great! I'll fit it into my job, my wife and daughter, grad school and my volunteer work. Not really. I have finite time to recreate and I limit to games that actually work. Not every developer is attunded to the people that by thier products as SC is. And I don't have time for a science lesson.

on this issue im evenly split.

PC Pros:Ability to download fixes, mods, add ons, to breathe new life into an old game. emulation... yes i have the MAME emulator, Nester emulator, Sega Genesis emulator, and Super nintendo emulator. i love playing oldschool games that my old nintendo (yes i still have it) wont run anymore. the ability to change resoloution in games to make it a much cleaner version than TV. The games are more dynamic IE: medieval total war, age of empires and MMORPG's to name a few examples.

PC Cons: if you have a dial up nowadays youre basically screwed. Blue screen of death. constant hardware upgrades to keep up with the "new wave" of games coming out and the wallet hardships it entails. sometimes shoddy tech support for either your hardware, or your games. developers releasing games that are bugged out (Pools of Radiance 2 comes to mind)

Console Pros: i agree with 99% of what Kiran said. i can kick back in the batcave and play on a nice 32" TV (i dont think ill see a 32" monitor in my lifetime) the ability for male bonding by inviting some friends over, plug in 2 or 3 controllers, and totally stomp the crap out of them on madden 2003. theres a ton of cool games on console that arent out on the PC, or cool games that have been ported over well to the console (splinter cell, hitman 2), the ability to hook your console system up to a 500watt stereo system and play medal of honor frontline , games work... period.

Console Cons: no upgrades, mods, add ons. limited online multiplayer ability (xbox, ps2) the drunken camera dude , having to use both control sticks to move and turn, tv reolution isnt as tight as on a pc unless you have like HDTV, does not have many (if any) dynamic titles.

i have both console and PC. and i am happy with both. neither get neglected in my house

Yeah there are some around here to that thinks that too. Actually, I have no real beef with any console I've played them all from the original PONG, commodore64, coleco vision, Vectrex, atari, intellivision, Nintendo, Snes, N64, playstation, Dreamcast. I really liked the Dreamcast a shame it died. My real beef is with the game companies. They made their fortunes off of us Pc gamers and all of a sudden we are treated like second class citizens when it comes to consoles and game releases KOTOR comes to mind as the latest infraction by making PC gamers wait two months for the game while the console version is out already. I know I've stated this issue often but it still burns my britches. Look what happened to Duke Nukem. They killed him by dropping the PC development and went console then we are thrown a pitifull bone years later to try to recapture his PC glory with Duke Nukem:Manhatten project what a piece of crap that was. They had a rock solid franchise with Duke on the PC and they just pissed it away all for a transitory game console. Go figure.

1024x768 is crystal clear?

I plugged my computer on the TV and I couldn't read anything from y desktop. And why do you think the windows are so large on morrowind xbox? because you wouldn'T be able to read otherwise.

Yes 1024x768 is crystal clear. If i get close enough i can see every pixel.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. when I hooked up my Voodoo3000 card to the TV I had the same issue with the text. But luckily, I knew what Icons were what on the desktop. I haven't tried my Radeon9000 yet on the TV.

My complaint about PC games is actually similar to movies.

I can't get lost in it because I constantly wonder if it is part of what is supposed to be or something went wrong.

Is that character on screen secretly angry about something or is it just bad acting? Are they somehow neurotic or being overacted?

Were those fighters appearing from a strange place a glitch or something cool that is about to happen?

On a console, I am confident that what I see is what I get and my experiences with bugs or hiccups have been very few and far between.

The problem of wondering if it is bad programming or something intentionally in game is still there but less on my PS2.

One thing is for sure, I really can't afford buying games for the PC, Xbox, PS2, ect. I mean, I guess you guy's who have more than 1 platform must be rich or something.

So, that being the case, I have to choose what I think has the best, and deepest games possible. Of course that being the PC. I know some of you guy's keep saying how buggy and unstable PC games are. Let me tell you this, If most PC games were really as buggy and unstable as you say, I'd have an Xbox right now. Fact is, most pc games I've had and enjoyed are no where near that buggy.

Alot of the time its because people don't know enough to keep their PC's updated and ready to run games properly. Something happens, and then blame it on bad coding, when it could of been freakin Aim running in the background or old drivers or something. You know what I mean. Hey, and if your a BC vet, then you really know what I mean, right?

Its simple, wanna play PC games, then you better learn how to keep your computer in shape. Don't really care about your PC, but still wanna play games, get an Xbox or something. Wanna do both, get a big wallet.

( I'm not knocking console games. They do have their advantages, and I'm sure those who play them love them and have fun on them. I just prefer PC games. And if you wanna play PC games, you just have to have alittle tender loving care for that case sitting there.)

Cheer's
