  1. The first game I can remember playing would be Asteroids on the old Atari 2600... classic! But there was also this one war game with tanks that I got attached to... ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://www.the-journeyman.com "Leave the repairs to the techs. 2. I haven't done anything as of yet... although I could conceivably set up a site section. If anyone cares to give me the appropriate info, I could get started on that. I have a small idea for a section, hopefully original enough that no one else has done it. Tac, "perl" is one of the most popular scripting languages around. I write programs in it all the time... although it seems to be on its way out, what with things like ASP and PHP being around. Ah well... I really ought to post more, it just seems I hardly ever have something to say. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://www.the-journeyman.com "Leave the repairs to the techs. 3. I actually have the entire GBS manual printed out around here somewhere... Never took the time to learn it, I suppose I'm saving it for a rainy day. The main reason I haven't started any RP threads is because I'm concerned about affecting things already written. It wouldn't do to write something that conflicts with established history, after all... I imagine I could just write something about my own ship and leave everyone else out of it, but that's hardly the spirit of RP. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://www.the-journeyman.com "Leave the repairs to the techs. 4. You know, I joined this fleet a while back and the only member I think I've spoken to is Dreada (if he's still a member, that is). I thought I might be helpful by offering my uh... "abilities." I can do the following: Host a site (no, really!) Write Perl scripts Write stories (but plenty of you do that already) Make websites in general... I don't know what you people need at the moment, but I'm willing to lend a hand. My specs won't run BCM so I might as well do SOMETHING. Anyhow, I'm bored a lot and if someone gave me something interesting to do... everyone might benefit. Heh. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  5. I used several free ISP's... AltaVista, Lycos, then Address.com. It turned out AV and Lycos were both on 1stUp.com's service (which is now defunct). Oh, and my $10/mo. ISP went out of business without informing me. Talk about customer service. You know what else stinks about NS 6? JavaScripts that worked in previous versions will no longer work in version 6. Talk about backwards combatibility. :-o I have no idea why I'm posting, look at the number of posts I've made... heh. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. 6. I'm assuming cacheman uses your hard drive as swap space, in which case it would dramatically slow down your system. BC3K is a processor hog, and I'm guessing it's a RAM eater as well. So yes, memory management programs will probably play hell with it! Although I'm not sure if I'm being any help here... ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  7. We still have this one computer that plugs into a TV, has a bubble-key keyboard, and a slot to hold up to 64KB of RAM. I'm not even sure what it is. It's just... ancient. Oh, we also have a TRS-80, Apple IIe, 386, 486, 486 laptop, P133, P166, and a PIII 733. Heh. It's like a museum of PC's... ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  8. For anyone who doesn't know (I assume that's all of you except Parias) I write Perl programs. The thing is, I am undertaking the biggest project I've ever attempted and I was wondering if anyone could be available to render some assistance if I need any. I suppose I should run down what the program does, too. A person starts from a login page. Their username and password are verified and stored in a temporary file (so the program knows they are logged in). From that screen, there are several options. 1) Create a file, 2) Edit a file, 3) Delete a file. Pretty basic, eh? Inside the user's account file, though, is a list of directories they are permitted to alter. So, there are several basic programs: Login, Menu, Edit, Create, and Delete. I've already encountered one potential problem, actually. The problem is that a person could easily bypass the directory structure by entering a filename such as ../filename.txt or /main/filename.txt or anything of that sort. I assume a split command would be able to take out anything like that. But I'm not sure! I suppose I should test it... Anyhow, I've probably not made much sense here. If anyone knows anything about Perl programming and wants to lend some assistance, please ICQ me at 2685176. I intend to make this program quite large eventually (it's already grown from a simple message posting system into this). Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and don't any of you tell me to write it for ASP instead. I'll get upset. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. 9. I live in happy Indiana as well. I'm also out in the country where the best we can hope for is a 33.6 connection. I hate it. I really hope that DSL deal comes through. But it'll be a wait. We were considering getting a satellite ISP. That might work. Fast download, phone-speed upload. I hope we have it available here. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  10. I feel your pain. I suffered with a Cyrix 6x86 for 3 years. It crashed all the time. However, the above posters are right. Version 2.09 is MUCH more stable than just 2.00. Get patches ASAP! You might have to tweak your computer some to make it all work well (check the FAQ), but it's well worth it in the end. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  11. I should have mentioned it in the review, but the reason I gave gameplay a 3 was because of the difficulty of the interface. Oops. Now if I were just allowed to edit the stupid thing... Oh well, they're just numbers. The review(s) speak for themselves. And I feel like such an idiot for hitting "Reply w/ Quote" on here (explaining this second message) rather than "edit post." Hehe. [This message has been edited by R. T. Maxwell (edited 07-28-2000).]
  12. Since I wasn't doing anything else, I wrote up a review as well. I tried to be as honest as possible and look at it from the perspective of someone who wasn't sure about buying the game, and what kind of people I think would enjoy it. Oh, I should post more... ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  13. For anyone who didn't know, Jeff K. is actually Lowtax. And Lowtax... well... I hope you know who he is. Hah. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  14. Well, I've always found Jeff K. to be insightful and witty. Of course, you would only seem the character of Jeff K. in such a light if you were aware that he is a complete fabrication. I think it's funny. I think Parias found it funny (but I can't speak for him, of course). But is it ironic that the SC was shown as a Vulcan? Hehe. Oh, I know I never post around here. *waves at everyone* Remember me? Long live Jeff K. And on a final note: I do think the scene with the Coke machine was hitting below the belt. Bad Lowtax! Other than that, though... I should stop rambling. Next! ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  15. I know I hardly ever post, but Parias directed me here... I know there's nothing I or anyone else can say that will probably be of much help, but I know we're all here to listen and talk. I don't know what else I can say except that I'm here. ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  16. I remember DOS (4.0 and up), XT's (gotta love those 5.25" drives), LP's and 8-tracks. I remember my dad's 8-tracks, more specifically. I think he still has them somewhere. I remember Space Invaders, but I always liked Asteroids better. I had no idea about the Space Shuttle Disaster at the time, but I do remember that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait on my birthday. Hm. The first computer I USED was an old TRS-80 my dad had plugged into a black-and-white TV with sound problems. The first computer that belonged to ME was a black 386SX. I loved that machine. My 13-year-old sister now has it, and doesn't even use it. I had that thing for a good 6 years. I'm not much of a car person. I did wreck my Nova in december though. Hehe. There's a car with muscle! ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  17. I'm starting a new site that is essentially a story that will be composed by the participants, similar to a role-playing game. It will be pretty structured, but I promise there's enough open-endedness and variety to make you all happy. The site is at http://www.decimate.org If anyone is interested, you can e-mail me at [email protected] I suppose I can give a brief rundown of just what it's about. There are four main "fronts" to the universe: The first front is begins in the year 2064, but will eventually go as far ahead as 2103 (I can explain this if anyone wants). It's pre-apocalyptic. In other words, World War 3 is just around the corner. The second front is based in the 500th century. It's a bit harder to explain, simply because the scope is so massive. Let's just say it's a human-dominated universe with just about any kind of technology one could imagine. The third front is an alternate version of the first. Yes, there is a reason for this. That's another thing I guess I'll have to explain... The fourth front is an alternate Earth that developed magic over technology. It's also enslaved at the beginning of the RPG. I only plan to do the first one at the moment, but I'll open the others as I get enough people willing to participate. You'll get a lot of control over your characters... total control, really. You can have as many as you want, too. I hope I'm not out of line posting this here, but I've seen the RPG's you guys do, and this is pretty similar... I'd really like to get it off the ground, since I think it has a lot of potential. I apologize, SC, if this post isn't appropriate to your forums. I'm just not quite sure... hm. Well, my e-mail is [email protected] Feel free to mail me and ask questions or anything! My ICQ is 2685176. Thanks... and please, please let a few of you sign up. *L* ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. 18. I realize I haven't posted here in quite awhile (so most of you have probably forgotten me), but I was recently assigned a research paper for my English 104 course. All I had to do was pick something I had read or would read. Not being able to come up with anything else that I wanted to do, I chose the BC3K manual. So, my paper is basically going to be an analysis of the manual, along with comparison to other game manuals. I think I can fill up seven pages with that. Oh yeah, and the opening paragraph is me taking a little dramatic license, describing a GALCOM/Insurgent battle just to set the mood. I might even post the final product here, if anyone is interested... but this is turning out to be a fun project. Thank you, SC, for saving my rear (and my English grade)! LOL! ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  19. Woooo. You're the man, SC. Works GREAT now! Guess you aren't the SC for nothin'...hehe. Long live BC3K (and sequels)! ------------------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Desideratus http://powerpub.net "Leave the repairs to the techs. Leave the mass destruction to ME."
  20. I just got a 3Dfx card for my computer, and decided to try out BC3K with it. I'd already used it in software mode, but I was kind of itching for 3D graphics. Well, this is what I have: Pentium 166 (yes, please kill me) 32MB SDRAM S3 ViRGE PCI video card (4 MB) Diamond Voodoo Monster 4MB PCI 3Dfx card I changed the memory settings to eliminate the "out of environment space" error as per the FAQ. My drivers are current, though I did give the ones on your site a try... they didn't work either. What happens is this: when I run it, the intro and all play just fine. Then the 3Dfx logo spins on the screen (much faster than it's supposed to, I might add), then it fades and I get dumped to the desktop with a GPF. I'm wondering if I just have an unsupported card (gee I hope not) or I'm just screwing something up. If any more info is needed, please let me know! Thanks! ------------------
  21. At present, I have been unable to work on a rewrite. This is for several reasons. 1) College. 2) Been doing LOTS of work on my website. 3) Concurrently writing one story, one series, and plotting another one. 4) The termination of my forum account here. I TRIED to change the e-mail in my profile, but apparently it's not allowed to be a Hotmail address (I thought that was just disallowed for registering purposes). So, I had to get a new account. I MIGHT still rewrite it. I don't know. Depends on whether or not Parias is still up to it. Thanks for asking, though! ------ Robert Thomas Maxwell GCV Something-or-other "I got nothing witty to say today."
