    The Curse

Thanks for pointing out this site, Tac. This saves so much time involved in sewing those little dolls,....still have to catch those stray cats to string up for a real voodoo curse, though. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I will not fear death on the field of battle, for life is but a dream from which we all must wake"
  2. Like most of you, I've spent enough on video card upgrades to have financed a politician for the U.S. Senate. I have one pc with a continuously upgraded card, presently using a GeForce, switched out from a VooDoo3. The other pc has the most long-lasting-and-still-able-to-keep-up-but-only-just-barely video card system I've had in the last several years; a NVidia 128 with two SLI-linked VooDoo 2 cards. Why doesn't 3Dfx make all of Glide capable cards as add on daughter cards like the VooDoo(1) and VooDoo 2? Hello, customer service! ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I will not fear death on the field of battle, for life is but a dream from which we all must wake"
  3. Am I to believe that all the site hits and traffic on this site is created by about 50 guys in the whole world, who are actively playing or have played this GAME? ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I will not fear death on the field of battle, for life is but a dream from which we all must wake"
  4. Ain't this Internet stuff great! No wonder Prez Clinton wants the government to take my tax dollars and give pc's, modems, and free ISPs to people who can't afford it on their own, to prevent the great internet divide which threatens to tear our world apart. Already the U.S. is sharply divided into those with, and those without Internet capability. Even within the ranks of those elite who have the Internet, a class war exists between modem, ISDN, and DSL individuals. Please help me; I only have a crumby modem and desparately need a T1 cable connect. Pity me, if you have any compassion at all. Cmdr. Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES [This message has been edited by thanatos (edited 04-28-2000).]
  5. I'm hoping STARLANCER can live up to half of its build-up. I was but a pup when Wing Commander initially hit the PC gaming arena, followed by the WC2, WC Academy, Privateer, WC3, WC4, WC5 and all the add-ons, from the Robert brothers, mostly Chris Roberts. I played Privateer more than any other game, due to the "open-end" game play after the actual scripted missions were over (I'm starting to drift to a comment about a game starting with a "B"). Release date for Starlancer is stated to be April 29, which at the time of this post is tomorrow. What is this noise about only 23 missions? Will this be a one week-end game from install to final mission, or just a pricey demo for the follow-up multiplayer on-line game? The dark side of the force is making me hope it isn't too great, so I can continue to delve into the continuing saga of The Game (starts with a "b") as a newbie commander. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I will not fear death on the field of battle, for life is but a dream from which we all must wake"
  6. c_d, Be sure you obtain BattleCruiser 3000A.D. VERSION 2.0x. My observation has been that most "bargin bin" copies of BC3K are VERSION 1.0x. To patch this to VERSION 2.0x will require a $15 patch. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I will not fear death on the field of battle, for life is but a dream from which we all must wake"
  7. Greetings cynically_deranged, Go back to the BC3000 homepage and then click on Galcom Store. You can get it mail order for around $15 (yes, that's fifteen, not fifty, g.washintons U.S. currency!) from "Chips & Bits" with an additional $2-4 shipping. For more mulah, you can order through GTI from our friends in England. The GTI version has the full professionally printed mega-manual, while the U.S. version's mega-manual is not printed out, but can be printed using your own PC printer. All the needed downloads (patches/MapPak/version control info/cheats/game documents) including the full manual can be accessed from the BC3000 home page by clicking on Downloads. The manual and game seem overwhelming to learn and play initially, but once you learn the basics and get into the game, you'll understand our fervor, including our respect for Derek Smart. Hope you take the plunge, Commander-candidate Cynically_D! Good luck. Cmdr. 8. This post is continued from previous post, entitled AGE OLD Question, and is restarted in honor of BLADES. This new thread will keep his e-mail from catching fire and going into a Moebius loop, and hopefully pull in any remaining commanders who've been too shy to sound off their ages. So far there is a range from 14 to 56, and most everyone remaining will probably fall within these two. If you still have not signed in your age, now is your moment to shine. Following is a summary of submitted data, compiled as of 1930 hours EST/CST-DS on 4/26/00 (sounds like a weather radio climatic report, doesn't it). Updated 4/27/00 at 0900 hrs. EST Total Respondents providing age: 52 Average age - 28.5 years Youngest Age - 14 years Oldest Age - 56 years Most Frequent Age - 27 (5) Distribution of Ages: 00-14 - 1 15-19 - 15 20-24 - 6 25-29 - 7 30-34 - 8 35-39 - 6 40-44 - 4 45-49 - 4 50-100 - 1 (I won't say anything) Cmdr. 9. I feel bad that we keep flooding your e-mail, Blades, especially on a relatively old post that's undergone a small rebirth of interest. So no one moans at you, but to keep this interesting topic open, I'll start a new post, summarizing the info to time/date. To all commanders who have yet to 'fess up to the number of years they've walked this sphere, don't answer here, but go to the new post AGE OLD QUESTION PART DEUCE and sign in, please. This will save Blades some e-mail grief. Cmdr. Doc Hoover GVC JOHN PAUL JONES
  10. Sorry Blades Maybe I can help. As of 1800 hours EST/CST-DS, I summed of the following on your post. Total Respondents giving age: 50 Average Age : 28.2 years Most frequent age : 27 years (5) Youngest Age : 14 years Oldest Age : 56 years Distribution of Commander's Ages: 00-14 - 1 15-19 - 15 20-24 - 6 25-29 - 7 30-34 - 7 35-39 - 6 40-44 - 3 45-49 - 4 50-100 - 1 (sorry Ondaderthad) Now you can close. Thanks! Cmdr. Doc Hoover GVC JOHN PAUL JONES [This message has been edited by thanatos (edited 04-26-2000).]
  11. Mano, Let me add to the admiration being bestowed upon you for your labors of The Academy. They really helped translate the comprehensive manual into an easy to follow recipe, especially for my initial BC3 flights revolving around mining drones, shuttles, and probes. Thanks for your time you spent on your site, and the help your Academy has provided to us newbie commanders. Cmdr. Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "I love the smell of vagrant missiles in the morning,...it's the smell of,... victory"
  12. 45 years. Those who read this forum and have not confessed their age, please do so, and then let's rework the numbers for average age. Cmdr. 13. Mike, you got it right. Wish I'd said that! 14. No relationship to me or any other persons I know, living or deceased, or somewhere in-between. Thanatos - noun; death as a personification Just wait until BC-M, and you'll see why I'm the death bringer. With my blazing internet connection of 18,000bps in the lovely rural setting of Northern Indiana, and a ping of 400-500, I'll be the scourge of all those who prey on the weak, the downtrodden, and those who think Star Trek is better than Star Wars (not Picard, but Kirk, and this doesn't include SWs-Episode One, of course). You'll recognize my battlecruiser, it'll be the one that looks like it's sitting still. A Falcon-NW Mach V with 56k modem and this is all the phone lines, strung up during the presidency of Abe Lincoln, can give. I'll be looking for a real fight sometime in late 2010, when DSL arrives to Green Acres. Back on reply, I just thought the name sounded cool and ominous - so much better than "rhoover#34567" or my UT name of "high_ping_king". It also ties in peripherally with my professional life, as a forensic pathologist. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well, and live." 15. Some interesting points to ponder; school clubs for gaming? culture of today including Q3, Tribes, and UT? respect for others who don't fit the middle 85%? I remember in high school, way back in the '70's, having a hilarious time creating and refining plans to dig tunnels in the city park to collapse the municipal watertower adjacent to the school, and wash the school away with a fluoridated tsunami. My Chemistry teacher at that time saw us working on this "black-ops" during a slow lab session, read our plan, got some chuckles, and went on. Needless to say, other than some fun, nothing else ever happened and I grew up - well, I became older, anyway. If this identical scenario were to occur today, I would be one of those kids talking to the principal, guidance conselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, police, FBI, and Janet Reno, herself. How things have changed. If the Internet Police call in reference to this post, please erase my registration data. Cmdr. Doc Hoover GCV John Paul Jones
  16. Reading the Relic Forum links in the previous posts of this thread illustrate classic examples as to why I've spent little time reading or visiting an on-line forum before coming into contact with the BC crew. Wouldn't it be interesting if all posts carried info as to age and education of the posting individual. "Flame" often seems to be just a self-serving word for less than mature verbal garbage, propagated by the relative anonymity of the Internet. 17. Thanks for the info, gentlemen; your kindness is appreciated and your Moms should be proud. I've been playing PC games for 15 years, but have not followed any gaming site posts with enough frequency or interest to absorb the lingo, as they seldom seemed to present a forum for any display of intelligence. The BC Commlink Forum has been a pleasant exception. I thought it would help to know what was being said even if I had to expose my naivety to ask the veteran commanders to translate. I wish I would have gotten on-board a long time ago. I wonder how many other simmers are out there who still have not had seen the final version of this game, and even with BCM looming on the horizon, don't know what they are missing. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well, and live."
  18. Could Uncle Rattler, or some equally magnanimous soul give me a hint to the meaning of the following abbreviations I frequently run across while perusing the BC Forum? 1) *ROTFL* 2) *ROFL* I feel like the guy who hears a funny joke, but just doesn't get it. ------------------ Cmdr Doc Hoover GCV JOHN PAUL JONES "We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well, and live."
  19. I had this problem using the Playmod, even when I thought I took great labors to use it correctly. I used the various "paymod x" commands only once per playmod enhancement/cheat type, and still had some crew members who refused to follow orders (maybe they don't like cheaters?). When I play without the Playmod program I experience no problem similar to what's being described. If you're using Playmod, try a new game without it, and see if your crew will listen. Doc Hoover
  20. What's the story with the decidely mixed treatment given to BC 3000A.D. by the soon to be discontinued PC Accelerator (PCXL or PCXaggerator) magazine? Facts in observance: 1. PCXL 4/00 - actually puts the final 2.0x version demo on its Demo CD. This is how I came to be re-inducted as a BC3K commander all over again, having tried and failed with v1.0x at its initial release. Before the demo, I had only seen incomplete references to version 2.0x. This is GOOD. 2. PCXL 4/00 - does feature about BC Millennium. Preview seems to portray the game as very promising. This is GOOD. 3. PCXL 4/00 - in same article highlights hype of BC game(s), without clarification as to whether the reference is to BC3000AD v1.0x, which we all know how that sad song is sung, or to the contemporaneously previewed BCM? Comparisons to other superhype failures are illustrated for fun. Can you say "New Coke". Without clarity as to what is being superhyped, this is BAD. 4. PCXL 5/00 - in an article titled "The Ass Olympics", BC 3000 (no version given) wins silver medals in BUG VOLUME and INTERFACE, meaning it had lots of bugs and an interface which was difficult to find. Both screenshots from the game exhibit complex TacOps screens with their myriad of data points, all displayed on the magazine page in a 3.25 x 2.5 inch colored box. No reference to the v2.0x demo in the previous April 2000 issue, which does not resemble the version 1.0x game that is winning these dubious awards, is made. This is BAD, this is VERY BAD. Readers often rely on what they see as an honest preview/review to help them know where to put their money. Why did the writers/editors feel they needed to pull out the BC3000 VERSION 1.0x? The other games were all Win 95/98 games recently released, and they can't even look at what BC3000 has become in its final form. I'm surprised they didn't place Wing Commander 1 on the BUGGINESS medal stand for the frequent crashes I used to experience when playing it 10 years ago on my then blazing 386. Is this a example of a bias in the published media, where an unfinished product(v1.0x) that was prematurely released several years ago (a long, long time in PC games) is showcased with a recent demo of the finished product(v2.09), as well as a preview of the next up and coming product from the same designer? SC, did you do something to the fine ladies and gentlemen at PCXL to make them BC3000 schizophrenic? 21. Mike, I'm so sorry for you crushing loss. No one can imagine the numbing cold that must darken your life with this kind of permanent tragedy. The incapacitating helplessness and emptiness you probably feel will ease with time, and healing of the soul will occur, even if we don't see how a wound like yours could ever lessen. The love you experienced and shared with these people, however, will never be again, and that finality will not change. Thanks for allowing us to share your grief, and the implicit message of ethanol and automobiles. Rick Hoover, M.D. South Bend, IN
  22. Hey BorgKilla If you want to be sold, get the BC3000AD v2.0x Demo and start playing. Once you've become familiar with the gameplay, imagine when you look at the Navitron galactic map, that you can go visit all those systems (planets/moons/spatial anomalies/star stations/planet surfaces), meet interesting races/castes, and blow them up. I, too, own a copy of BC300AD v1.0x and elected to purchase a new copy of v2.0x (it was v2.07), upgrading to 2.08, then 2.09, and adding the MapPak without any problems. If the game is too difficult, the SC has given you the ability to "enhance" your abilities through the downloadable PlayMod. You can also research topics on this board, and if you have a new problem and you've Read The FINE Manual (RTFM), posting it on the board for newbies will get a prompt reply (unless it is in the manual or on a previous post, in which case you are taken to the nearest airlock for cadet re-education/retraining). I've been playing this game for the past 4 weeks and have not touched my previously "hot" games of Jane's USAF and Jane's F18 since I loaded up BC3000. I was looking foward to the release of Tachyon when I played its demo, but I saw it at the retail store recently and had no desire to purchase it, as my free time is consumed with this game. Hope this helps with your decision. Doc Hoover 4 week old newbie Cmdr, GCV John Paul Jones
  23. Thanks for the positive replies, and for restoring my faith in people. I basically set myself up to be flamed, and you've shown your true nature by responding with sincerity and kind words of welcome. I'll once again be purchasing the game knowing there is a good community back-up for some of the complexities of the gameplay as well as a forum to interact with other players whom seem to have developed a good rapport with each other. I plan on reading the entire manual after I print it out, then reading it again, and then re-reading and doing a on-line FAQ search before I post a typical newbie question (I actually like to read). Now, how do you maneuver your ship to orbit a planet? (just kidding!) "Wished into the field" - originally stated by Billy Mumy on The Twilight Zone. All proper respondents may move into the final round of Jeopardy. Again, thanks for the kind words of welcome and support. Doc Hoover aka thanatos
  24. I've spent most of the afternoon scanning the various topics and threads in the BC3K forum. I purchased the original game at the time of its initial release date, and was considering obtaining version 2.0x to re-enter the BC community and give a game which showed so much promise and potential a second look. My impression of this forum is one of an tangible feeling of condescension and some gloominess. The "Newbie" section even has curt and uncharitable responses from the repliers, including the Supreme Commander. A power cascade or pecking order seems to be in force, as well. A game such as this, with its grand and intricate scale and depth needs veterans to assist, not belittle, the rookie (even when he does ask how you orbit a planet for the 500th time). I saw multiple references to being banned from the site. A good idea when unacceptable social behavior warrants, however, multiple topics repetively refer to this punishment as a ever-present dark cloud hanging overhead. There seems to be a core of helpful and polite/spirited commander/members, facilitated by a darker group of repliers who seem to become irritated at minimal provocation. My quandry is should I purchase this game and enter into the BC community, or is my perception of an underlying hostility to "newbies" and a fascist presence real? Should this post meet with only rudeness and divisive comments, my question will be answered. Please tell me my perceptions are mistaken, and the dark current I feel is one of my own making. Tell me the derogatory comments from the Supreme Commander are partially made in light jest, and not in total contempt for the submitting authors. Since this post may cause me to be "wished into the field", I'll wish you all contined success and happiness in your real-life endeavors. I am a successful medical doctor with a good career, happy homelife, more than adequate finances, and a good wife. I'm well poised to withstand a flood of derision, or a wave of good fraternity. Thanks, Rick L. Hoover, M.D.
