Ground vehicles sometimes end up under the terrain

Don't just fire up Tacops and pick any random spot on a whim. True, true. But those drones have a tendency to wander pretty far over time. The furthest one ever ended up from my drop point was 40 km -- I had originally set it down in a nice level spot (a city) and during its Brownian walk it traveled to and beyond another nearby city. Those things encounter all sorts of hilly terrain once they wander off far enough. Hence why I like to keep a close eye on them. Your moon comment is interesting, though. I'll have to go down and investigate one sometime and check out the relative hilliness of the terrain. The problem with moons are that they tend to be a bit dull. On planets, there's nothing like hopping out of the CC in a city and jet-packing to the top of some skyscraper to truly appreciate the scale of your cruiser parked downtown, while killing time waiting on some drones. Or taking some crew out for waypoint practice maneuvers. /me giving crew shore-leave orders "OK everyone, remember where we parked!" (with apologies to Captain Kirk) -

Ah... so that's where my drone went while I was in the bathroom that evening. One minute it's there, the next it's not, can't find it and my CC says it's still alive. I really hope you figure out this one. As it is, now I only mine when my CC is parked and I can watch the drones like a hawk, saving every 15-30 minutes so I don't have to replay as much if I lose one (and I have time to quickly dispatch a shuttle to pick up a drone and drop it someplace more level). A slightly inconvenient workaround, but useful to have. Keep up the thinking, SC! -
Bush: Broadband for the people by 2007

quote: but QUIT confusing CB radio and HamI always thought CB was for cars and truckers -- portable radio, like walkie-talkie, but with much better range. The guy had a big metal tower in his backyard, which I always thought was for ham radio. I take it some CB systems us via fixed ground antenna, not just ham? Huh. Learned something new, I guess. -

/ramble mode on Ham radio operators can also be a problem. A friend of ours had a paraplegic neighbor who liked to use ham radio (note: this is in the 80's). When the ham radio was in operation, he could not get any signal whatsoever on his TV or radio. His grandchild, unhappy that he couldn't watch his TV cartoon, actually went next door one day and asked the neighbor to stop. Which he did (nice of him to do so). My parents' house was about a block away, and you could always tell when the ham guy was on the air because even their TV reception would suffer; not as bad as our friend next door to him though. We strongly suspect he was operating way over the allowable legal power limits for that device, since he claimed he could carry on conversations which should have been beyond ham radio range. The problem was that when his neighbors would complain, judges would take pity on him (being handicapped) since he maintained that was how he kept in touch with his friends. Not that I'm against that, but my friend didn't see why he had to used boosted power levels. /ramble off My point? If a ham radio operator can complain about a TV owner, a TV owner can also complain about a ham radio operator too. And maybe this is a dumb question, but if a class "A" plasma TV isn't rated for residential use, why do they sell them to home-owners? Not to mention, how's the ham radio operator going to figure out of all the people who live within a half-mile radius owns the device? He may suspect, but he can't enter someone's house to prove anything... -

Turning off the main engine kill radine consumption, or else reduces it to a point where I haven't seen it decrement any. Been away from the game a while (RL busy). Any progress on this front?

Drat. You know, I kinda miss the days when dogfighting was so much simpler. I remember playing X-Wing and its expansion packs -- the main reason I first bought a PC -- sending all my wingmen home and singlehandedly taking on the Empire. I can't count how many Star Destroyers I took out out with my lone starfighter. And which somehow would reappear for the next mission...

And yes, it will be deleted when I get back. AFAIK Logistix power allocation control has always operated when running on solar power, so you can route power where needed when needed (e.g. sacrifice life support for a second to launch a shuttle). I set down in sunny spot to be sure I had ample solar power. It sounds silly, sure, but I did see a difference last night between saving in space with nuclear reactor shut down vs. on planet. No lie. That said, 12:30 am is not the best time for deep thinking. I will try again tonight... I ain't looking for trouble here; no mad, SC. Delete thread if you will. Whilst attempting to figure out a question about the solar reactor, I came across the following behavior. I've just replicated it in a fresh game, so I know it isn't my current game. I am running the current version of UC, with the RC7 patch. To replicate: 1. Go to SNG. 2. Accept default profile. I have replicated this using the default profile, and a more customized one involving a Battlecruiser MK 1 and a Profile 7 personal inventory. 3. Normal "Roam" scenario. 4. You should have just launched from Galcom HQ. I targeted "Earth", set it on my flight path, and hyperjumped to it. Accept "Yes" to establish planetfall. 5. While in transit, use TACOPS to establish a waypoint for your CC someplace in a daylight time zone. You could do this step before #4. But since the CC takes a minute to get to Earth you have time. 6. Once your CC enters Earth (at the sunny location you picked), find some place level and land her. 7. From the main HUD, click your "Reactor" button on the left and turn it off. Your HUD displays should now say "Malfunction" in various locations. 8. Go to "Logistix-Power". Note that pretty much everything below "Weapons" power should be turned off, while "Weapons" and above should have some power. MAKE A NOTE OF THE POWER SETTINGS. 9. Exit Logistix. Use the "Command" button to "Save and Quit". 10. From the UC startup screen, resume your game. 11. Go to "Logistix-Power". In both of my save games -- the one I'm playing and the test one I set up -- ALL LOGISTIX POWER IS AT ZERO RATHER THAN WHAT IT WAS PRIOR TO SAVE/RESUME. This is bad if you don't know it's going to happen. Your crew starts taking damage because life support is down. If you know it'll happen, you can power it back on -- if you're onboard your CC. Also, this doesn't seem to happen while in space. Just on planets. I searched this forum section and did not see anything regarding this. I'm praying this isn't something I overlooked in the manual... Again, I have a save game if needed.

I keep waiting to see if there's a notable difference in solar battery output. Parked my 'cruiser planetside. As a side note, UC is really cool in that as the sun set, the solar output diminished over time. Unfortunately, the elusive chargeable "battery" has yet to be seen -- if that's what you meant. I remember reading that about the battery in the old BC3K docs. The thing was, I didn't see any concrete evidence of its behavior there either. Then again, BC3K was somewhat unstable on my rig anyway so I didn't have the luxury of trying that kind of stuff. I messed with the solar battery question somewhat in BCM but gave up. It'd be nice to have a definitive answer on this. Something concrete like "do this and watch that..." On a side note, I've managed to come across what I think might be a bug. That's for another thread though...

This question has been asked so many times and in so many forms if you do a search on this site I'm positive you'll turn up a topic like this in BCM(G) or BC3K. Time to perpetuate the legacy in UC, I guess

The piece of ancient 3000AD lore I'm curious about is what's the "Blind Man with Sleeves" award and what DeSylva did that got him it...

Good question; I have a suspicion as to the answer. For now I'll shut up until proof is brought forth. I see there's a new "doh" smiley. SC, am I going to need this once the solution to this puzzle comes to light?

Getting nowhere. SC, still no hints?

Hi 5pyd3r, welcome to the forum. And anyone who wants to help on figuring out this solar reactor thing is appreciated BTW, you should check your forum sig, as per instructions here.

I'm still stuck. The only thing I can think of at this point is waiting around to upgrade the main reactor. The thing is, that's a nuclear upgrade that wouldn't seem to have anything to do with solar power. One interesting thing about the solar reactor is that none of the main comp systems work when it is on -- apparently, their power grid is tied exclusively to the NRE. Kind of stinks if you are in a pinch and radar is out. But that may not have anything to do with anything. The problem with this issue is that in a simulation as in-depth as UC, sometimes trying to figure out what effect one input has is difficult because there's just too many outputs that can distract or mislead. A "needle in the haystack". Of course, I'm not saying it's not possible that I'm being completely boneheaded and am overlooking an Insurgent EFM sitting on the haystack chuckling with a sticky note with the answer pasted on his forehead while I'm searching the haystack... Help?

Bump Nothing new to report. On the other hand, I've been getting lots of practice handling other aspects of my cruiser...

I like mine because it reminds me of a cool villain, Sephiroth, from Final Fantasy VII. Not that that's anything like me. It just looks cool. Plus, it kind of looks anime. Yeah, anime rocks! I have no idea who actually is supposed to be portrayed by the avatar image.
