[RP] 1415, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure The remaining Battlecruisers all sat in the dim red light of General Quarters, as the crews battled another Gammulan attack. Apparently, the Gammulans had decided to investigate why their ships had disappeared once again. For those unfortunates, the price they paid was their lives. And for Wraith, it was one less ship they would have to deal with later. Aboard the Swiftsure, Somerset was pleased with their progress. The raids they had made against Gammulan transports had given them desperately needed weapons and cloaking fuel. So far, it had all been put to good use, against those that they took it from. "Commander, enemy vessel 22 had been destroyed," Kamarov reported as the weapons fell silent once again. An alert went off at Ishikawa's console, prompting him to say "Activity at the jumpgate, sir. New enemy vessel, bearing 005, mark 357. Designated Gamma 23." Somerset activated his all ships channel, ordering "All ships, fire at will. I repeat, fire at will." Shortly, a SOS beacon sounded in Somerset's headset as the Gammulan Warship was disabled. In the viewscreen, a single missile collided with the hull, and an explosion ripped along the ship as it blew into pieces. The other ship was still smoldering when Ishikawa reported, "Sir, new enemy ship, bearing 005, mark 357. Gamma 24." Somerset was about to give his standard order, when Soran said, "Commander, activity at the Pravis jumpgate! Bearing 249, mark 184. Four transits, and increasing." This changed the situation, quite drastically. Somerset acted quickly. "All ships, concentrate fire on the enemy vessel bearing 005, mark 357. Once it's destroyed, engage cloaks, and head for the Pravis jumpgate." "I do not believe that is wise, Commander," Soran said. "We would, as you humans say, 'Only be going deeper into the lion's den'." "Don't remind me, Number One. Besides, it's our only chance. Would you care to run into around 500 Gammulan ships in Hadar?" "No." was the reply. "Course plotted for Pravis, Commander." Ishikawa said. "Enemy vessel destroyed!" Kamarov shouted. Soran turned to face Somerset as he reported, "Thirty-two enemy vessels, bearing right down on us, Commander. We will not be able to jump before they arrive. More enemy ships are still jumping in." "Then we'll do this the easy way." Somerset reopened his all ships channel. "All ships, prepare to fall back. First Squadron, stay with me. Second and Third are to engage cloak, and act like you're running for Pravis. Turn around, and we'll catch them from behind. Two can play at that game." McAllister, bring us about, 281, mark 310. Prepare to fire all weapons once the enemy is in range." 1445, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian Somerset had seen the destruction of 16 more Gammulan ships. So far, he had lost none, but that could change soon. Unless he changed the rules. "Kamarov, get ready to deploy all our mines. Ishikawa, ready escape course to Pravis." "Aye, sir," they both quickly replied. After the orders were given, Somerset's rag-tag force took the fight to the enemy. Ships twisted and turned around one another, with the Wraith ships dropping mines one after another behind or beside passing Gammulan vessels. Caught by their own proximity, 3 more Gammulan ships fell to the mines, and disabled 4 more. With their forces disoriented, Somerset made his move. "All ships, engage cloaks, and fall back to Pravis. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get the hell out of here!" As she faded from sight, the Swiftsure shot toward Pravis, and eventual safety. Once they arrived, all ships checked in, and Somerset perused the computer displays, and came up with a plan. "Mr. Ishikawa, plot a course to Capella. We'll use F08 to get out of here." "Commander, may I remind you that fluxfields are highly unstable, and that we may find ourselves in a black hole, or a supernova." Soran said warningly. "If you have a better idea, I'd like to hear it, Number One," Somerset said waiting a few moments. "I didn't think so. Carry out my orders, and Melanie, send them to all the other ships as well." "Course ready, sir." Ishikawa reported. "All ships acknowledge." "Let's get under way. McAllister, engage." Somerset ordered. 1514, March 15, 3008 Chanis-I, Xyon The Swiftsure was the last ship to make the dangerous jump into Chanis-I from the fluxfield. Amazingly, no ships were missing when Somerset made them check in. They had gone from partway through enemy territory to 2 jumps from the next battlefield of Lydon. Somerset had the feeling they would be welcome backup to what must be a seriously depleted Wraith Fleet. "Order all ships to proceed to Lydon, maximum speed. Stand down from Condition Red, and secure from General Quarters, for now. Get me damage and casualty reports for all ships, immediately. This war isn't over yet." Somerset said. The officers carried out their orders, and for the umpteenth time in these last 2 days, the Swiftsure headed off into battle. And deep in the back of it's Commander's mind, Somerset wondered to himself, Just what was Gallion going to do...and is he still alive...? [/RP] Another tough situation dealt with. Hope ye be all right, Gallion. Maybe catch ye on ICQ sometime, now that ye be back in the States. ------------------ Cmdr. I really do think that the Insurgents destroying the station after raiding it is most interesting...and makes Wraith more likely to attack Insurgent vessels. Though I doubt Wraith will discover this for some time. SC: You're most welcome. To answer your other question, GCN is the acronym for the Galactic Command Navy. ------------------ Cmdr. Timeline - 3000AD to 3015AD
Ben Somerset replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in Role Playing Discussions
I shall go into SC's #7. As Gallion called it, the BCT-D is DeSylva's proposed timeline from 3008-3018, just before he left the first time. Located in his Farewell it describes, in detail, the events of GWII, and it's ending. Most of the timeline encompasses the War, and does not address any other races, or their histories. Over the last few months, we RP'ers have endeavored to bring at least the first part of DeSylva's timeline to life. That of the beginning of GWII. I shall attempt to make a long story short. 1. Gammulans have been planning for some time to launch a new War against the Terrans, and erradicate their prescence in the galaxy. Wrath SS is located directly in the line between them, and Earth, so it should be eliminated, lest it be used to assault their rear and make them fight on two fronts. 2. One of their preliminary actions is to destroy small GCN outposts (Manned ODS platforms), so Wraith Fleet loses their eyes and ears in the Gammulan Quadrant. 3. A GalCom Navy vessel detects destruction of one outpost, and locates the remains of another. The Commander decides that this indicates War, and informs Wraith of this fact. 4. A Fleet of 68 GCN vessels form in Rinaal to defend Wrath Starstation, under the command of Benjamin Somerset. 5. Somerset learns that the enemy fleet numbers 368 ships, and knows that Rinaal will fall. To avoid capture of Wrath, he orders it evacuated, and the self destruct activated so the Gammulans won't be able to capture it and use the Station to command war operations against GalCom. 6. The Gammulan Fleet arrives, and are decimated by the Wraith forces in Rinaal. Wraith decides to pull back to Hadar-9, destroys Wrath intentionally, taking out several Gammulan ships in the process. This is how GWII, at least the beginning, stands up to this point. I hope that I wasn't too long winded, and that this brings the SC up to speed. It provides logical explanation to the destruction of Wrath, though I do think that the Insurgents having something to do with it is a very interesting plot twist. Hopefully, the SC will approve. ------------------ Cmdr. [RP] 1319, March 15, 3008 Hadar-IX, Cyrian GCV Rodney Conner didn't quite understand just what he was supposed to be doing here, right in the middle of the Gammulan Armada. If the ships cloak failed, the Rodney and it's entire crew were sitting ducks. It would only be a matter of time before the Gamms figured out that the SR probe was just a ruse, and came after them. With the power of those probes, they might just be able to do it. "Status report, Number One." Conner requested. The First Officer swiftly replied, "All systems are nominal, sir. The cloaking device is stable, and functioning normally. However, Engineering reports some minor particle flux readings. It may be because of the power of the probes." "Science, are we getting any data?" "I'm getting some excellent readings, sir. The power of these things is amazing..." his Science Officer replied. "Very well, very well. Navigation, I want an escape course to the Fleet ready, and laid in. Helm, I want you ready to go to hyperspace the moment I give you an order. Understood?" Both officers carried out their orders, knowing full well that if the Gamms located them, they two would have the fate of the whole ship in their hands. Suddenly, the Science Officer said, "Commander! I'm getting some strange readings from the probes. I can't tell what's going on...I need to get some more data..." "Then I need it yesterday!" Conner responded. The First Officer looked at Conner as he said, "Sir! Main Engineering reports that the particle flux is only increasing. It may make us detectable by enemy sensors!" Without warning, an alarm started sounding in Conner's ear as the Weapons Officer jumped, yelling, "Commander, our cloak has failed! The enemy is getting a weapons lock!" Before the sentence was finished, Conner ordered, "Helm, engage!" With that, the Rodney flew away from the Gammulans, and flung a sphere of rainbow colored light ahead of them, jumping into hyperspace. Though none of them could see it, the Rodney barely missed a barrage of weapons fire that very well could have disabled them. Lady Luck traveled with Conner and the Rodney that day. [/RP] Since Ristar no longer contacted Somerset, he isn't present this post around. Gallion: Ye be an evil creature, forcin' me to get out of such a sticky situation. ------------------ Cmdr. Dilvorn: I shall make the same recommendation that I did to Ristar. If you're going to head for the war zone, I suggest you do it through the back way ie. Fluxfields. A direct route will be blocked by a nice big Gammulan Fleet at Hadar-IX. The only other way is through the Fluxfields. But be wary, because they may be guarded as well. Before making your final jump, I'd send a probe in ahead to confuse the Gamms into thinking it's just a unmanned recon. You'll be long gone before they realize it. Of course, that's my two bits. As Gallion would say: "Ye've been warned." ------------------ Cmdr. Time for communications galore. [RP] 0603, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure Somerset had just concluded his communications with Dragon Central, and Ristar, Londono, and other Commanders. The picture pieced together wasn't a pretty one. Tac was down to 36 ships in Hadar-IX, not including the Mandorian ships who had joined in the fight with Wraith. At least that way, they stood a chance. Thankfully for them, the Gammulans didn't know about the force of almost 100 more Wraith vessels that had been moved from Tyrus-II to Lydon, where Londono intended to make a stand. It wasn't bad, but it could be worse. From her station, for what seemed like the umpteenth time, Melanie Winforth reported, "Commander, message for you from the Graf Spee." "On screen," Somerset ordered. "Ben, change 2000," Gallion said to Commander Somerset once a commlink had been established. Somerset barely managed to form the word "What...?" before Gallion cut him off, and continued. "I am detaching and reassigning eight of the battlecruisers under my command to you. You will carry out your current assignment, harass the Gams when able, and get word to our esteemed leader that something came up that I need to look into. I will be out of contact for most of this sojourn. The Gams fell for this trick once and I donna think that they will fall for it again. Also expect some type of Gam recon force to investigate what we did here. Any questions Ben?" Somerset attempted to make a reply, but Gallion felt that his silence indicated consent, and continued. "Good. The only other thing that I will add is this," Gallion became somewhat tense and sullen as he continued, "watch your six Ben. As ye know the Gams arenÔÇÖt pussy-footinÔÇÖ around this time. I have a bad feeling about this. Good luck and ÔÇÿtill we meet again, Gallion OUT!" With that, the standard GCN logo with the words END TRANSMISSION appeared. When it returned to the forward view, Somerset could see the Graf Spee, and some unlucky Battlecruiser head for the Pravis jump point. Where they were going, or what they were doing, Somerset knew not. And I probably really don't want to know what that crazy Corsair is up to...," he thought to himself. He gave orders to redeploy his ships into a new defensive formation, and continue waiting. At this point, he and his ships were caught behind the fence, and Somerset wasn't going to risk running the gauntlet of Gammulan ships located right next to the Hadar-IX jumpgate. They had that point secured, and Somerset knew it. "All right, it's time to batten down, and wait. Number One, let's stand maintain Condition Red, but send Alpha and Beta shifts below to get some rest. Five hours, and rotate them with Delta and Gamma shifts. Melanie, inform all ships to do the same. We can't fight the Gammulans, as well as our fatigue. Ishikawa, Kamarov, Winforth, get below and get some rest as well." Somerset flicked the comm switch on his console, as Soran complied with his orders. "Somerset to O'Malley." "O'Malley here, sair." came the quick reply. "Shawn, I want you to get below and get some rest." Somerset ordered. "But, sair...if they enemy tries to attack...!" "If they do, you'll have plenty of notice, Lt. Commander. Now get some rest, that's an order." O'Malley replied reluctantly "Aye, aye, sair." 1315, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure Somerset had now been awake for 28 hours. He had ordered the doctor to report to the bridge 6 hours ago with a stimulant to keep himself awake. He was also working on his eighth cup of tea. So far, it had been quiet. The shift rotation had gone smoothly, and Somerset now had a crew ready for whatever the Gammulans had to throw at them. Most of the senior staff were back at their stations, except for McAllister, whom Somerset had sent to rest when the rest of the staff returned to stations. Ishikawa was more than capable of handling her post in case something happened while she was asleep. Once again, Melaine reported from her post, "Sir, incoming message. It's from the Shogun, Level II, marked for your eyes only." Somerset heaved a sigh as he said, "Put it through." He put in his security chip and clearance, and the message appeared. ------Begin Transmission----- To: Cmdr. B. Somerset, GCV Swiftsure Fm: Strat. Cmdr. J. Ristar, GCV Shogun Commander, you are hereby ordered to reconnoiter Hadar-IX, and track new enemy probes in that region. Under no circumstances are you to destroy the probe. Briefing on our current progress with a fix for the probe follows. Good luck, Ben. -------End Transmission------- Somerset looked over the data, and found it somewhat interesting. But, it would be no help to him, since he had neither the equipment, nor the time to mess with research. He needed results, not progress reports. Even so, a way to get through the probes jamming would be nice. "Melanie, get me a channel to the Rodney." Luckily for Somerset, one of the most experienced Commanders, Conner, had been left behind with him in Rinaal. And now, he would come in handy, with his maneuverable Questar. Conner came on the screen, and said "Yes, sir?" "Conner, what's your status?" "All damage was repaired hours ago, sir. We're combat ready, and aching for some action." "Here's your chance. I'm sending you data on some sort of special probe the Gammulans have come up with. I need you to enter Hadar-IX, keep a track on it, and collect more data. Foremost, do not, I repeat, do not destroy that probe! Keep as far away from any similar probes, because we don't know if they can burn through a cloaking field or not. If it looks like you've been detected, run for the rest of the Fleet. I doubt that the Gamms will follow. Take care of yourself, Conner. We need good ships and crews like yours, especially now." Conner looked down at one of his displays, and reviewed the current data. "Sounds like a lot of fun, sir. I'll keep in touch, and see you on the other side. Conner out." It would be up to Conner, now. Somerset couldn't risk himself, when the rest of the ships were under his care. Conner would do the job just as well as he would, and Somerset wanted to recommend him for commendation when they finally made it back to friendly territory. The Questar shot for the Hadar-IX jump point, as an SR probe shot out from in front of it. The Rodney disappeared from view as her cloak stabilized. Somerset wished him luck. [/RP] I would appreciate it if Conner wasn't killed. I kind of like his character. ------------------ Cmdr. As for the location of the new SS, I agree with Gallion. If our station is going to be the "speedbump" of an attack on Sol, it should be held somewhere close to home. Unfortunately, Gallion's idea of placing the new SS in Lennen/Sirius wouldn't work, as there is already a Mixed/Raider station in the region. Therefore, I would like to put my two bits forward for relocating to Lyrius/Sirius. No station there, so it is ripe for our pickings. As always, I will follow your orders/decisions. Gallion: Ye can reference the post here. I haven't heard directly from Tac about why we should move the SS, but it may have to do with the fact that when Online comes out, our Fleet will be a sitting duck. In the current RP, located here, the SS has been blown to bits to save it from Gammulan occupation. Tac may want to move to save us from this potential fate when Online comes out. Having your SS destroyed on Day 1 isn't exactly press worthy material. Of course, this is my complete assumption and supposition. I could be wrong. ------------------ Cmdr. [RP] 0530, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure The fighting had let up, and no Gammulan ships had attempted to jump into Rinaal in the last 20 minutes. It appeared that the Gammulans had decided to leave the remainder of their ships in Hadar-IX. Somerset assumed that whoever was commanding the Gammulan Fleet wasn't about to risk sending any more ships back to Rinaal, because none of the seventeen he had sent already had reported back. A lone ship just completing transit was no match for fifteen heavily armed Battlecruisers with crews lusting for revenge against their dead comrades. Comrades who had died less than twelve hours ago, in the first conflict of the Second Gammulan War. Even now, all the ships sensors could still detect debris and wreckage from the Battle of Rinaal, and of the remnants of a mighty Starstation orbiting Rinaal's first moon. It was a place that many of his crew had come to call home. Where they lived with wives, and raised families. But that was no longer. Their families were hundereds of lightyears away by now, safe from the enemy onslaught. What urged these weary crews on was exacting vengenance against the Gammulans, who had attacked them unprovoked, and killed their friends. Out of sixty-eight ships, thirty-two were lost. Somerset tried to cope with the idea that over 6400 good men and women had lost their lives under his command. He couldn't convince himself that there was nothing he could do. That what happened was no fault of his. He knew that would haunt him for a long time to come. Somerset's thoughts were interuppted by Melanie. "Sir, incoming message for you, Priority I." "Put it through," Somerset said as he put himself together. It was a text only message from the Fleet Commander. He was ordered into Hadar-IX, and gather intel on the new Gammulan probes. Oh, great. My first official assignment of the War, is to go scan an enemy probe. Well, 'tis not mine to question why... Somerset thought to himself, and started giving orders. "Soran, prepare and SR probe for launch. Ishikawa, plot a jump to Hadar-IX. Kamarov, kindly take us to Condition Red, and sound General Quarters. We're going to look at those new probes the Gammulans have." They all looked at each other strangely, but complied with their orders, as klaxons went off all through the ship as the computer intoned "Condition Red, Condition Red. All hands man Battle Stations." Reports of readiness started flowing in, and Kamarov was the last to respond with "All Battle Stations manned and ready, sir. Veapons charged and at the ready." "Very well. Soran, launch the probe, and send it through to Hadar-IX. McAllister, keep us within 300 meters of the probe to mask our jump. Mr. Kamarov, engage the cloaking device. Once we jump, start taking all the readings you can. I want hard data on this." The Swiftsure faded from view, as it followed closely behind the SR probe. They approaced the jumpgate, and with a flash of light, the probe disappeared. Less than a second later, the flash encompassed them too, as the transited to Hadar-IX. "Report," Somerset asked. "Readings are sporadic, Commander. It appears that the probes are being used to jam sensors, much like an EMD unit, only more powerful. I'm getting indications that they are 2.6 times more effective than a standard EMD jammer." "Will it effect the cloaking field?" Ishikawa questioned. "The cloaking device is active and operating normally, sir." Kamarov said, answering the question. "Sir! I've managed to get a...vait...it's gone. For a few seconds, I had a veapons lock. But now it's gone." "Soran?" Somerset said, wanting more information. "It appears that the probes stop jamming every 2.6 seconds. They may use that time to search for any frequencies that have active scans, and then jam them. Sensors indicate that the probes are cycling once every 2 minutes," Soran replied. Ishikawa's face lit up as he suggested, "So, what if we rotate active frequencies every 2 minutes?" "We would be jammed by another probe that just completed cycling. There is a way to defeat everything...we just have not found it yet." Soran said, deflating Ishikawa's good idea. They remained for another 25 minutes gathering data, before Somerset ordered their return to Rinaal. Once they arrived, Somerset brought up a communication screen, and wrote a message. He attached the data they and the probe had collected, and sent it to a secure outpost, where it would be routed directly to Ristar. Somerset hoped he could make good use of it, before he had to fight an enemy equipped with those jammers. He would make it a fight they would never forget. [RP] 0415, March 15, 3008 Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure Once more, the Swiftsure stood in the glow of Condition Red, and the klaxons of General Quarters. Gallion had just crossed the jump point to Hadar-IX and enacted their joint plan for a rear assault. Gallion would act as bait, and Somerset and the rest of the Battlecruisers would catch the Gammulan's as they came through the jump point, and before their ships could reorient their systems. All they had to do was wait, and keep their weapons locked on the jumpgate. Soon enough, there was a flash, and a battered Battlecruiser appeared through the jump point. The Gammulans wouldn't be far behind. Somerset activated an all ships channel, and said "All ships, keep weapons locked for the first thing that comes through the jumpgate. Once something appears, fire at will. I repeat, fire at will. Let's teach those b*****d's a lesson. Swiftsure out. From his post, Soran reported "A ship is transiting the jump point," as a flash of light came from the jumpgate, and a Gammulan ship appeared, disoriented. "Fire all weapons!" Somerset ordered. From all of the Battlecruisers, missiles and weapons fire pounded the ship. Within 5 seconds her shields were pierced, and fires began erupting, fed by the oxygen contained in the ship. This happened fourteen more times, as Gammulan ships transited the jump point, and were destroyed before their systems could even reorient from the jump. Gallion had been smart in suggesting that they exploit this little remembered problem of computers taking a moment to adjust after passing through a jump point. But it was just long enough to take advantage of. The plan of the wily Corsair had succeeded once again. How, Somerset would never know. But it took the war to the enemy, and that is what he wanted. The Gammulan Navy would rue the day they waged war against Wraith. [/RP] Will post about the JD meeting a little later. ------------------ Cmdr. [RP] 15 March, 3008. 0150 hrs. Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure All the Swiftsures damage had long since been repaired by the sheer ingenuity of Shawn O'Malley. His monicker of "Miracle Worker" had been well earned through the fires of battle. Now, the crew sat quietly, closing in on 12 hours at Battle Stations. In the command chair, Benjamin Somerset had been awake for over 18 hours, and was getting tired of waiting. He finally decided to wait another hour, and then give Corsair Wing up for lost. Even if they were stuck in the Gamma System itself, it wouldn't take this long to get through to Rinaal. And since they were stuck here with nothing to do, he was going to give some of the crew neccessary rest. "Number One, dismiss Alpha and Beta shifts below. Delta and Gamma are to maintain Battle Stations." Soran nodded, and replied "Yes, Commander." He activated his comm panel and his voice rang throughout the ship "Alpha and Beta shifts, stand down. All other stations maintain Condition Red, and Battle Stations. Soran, out." From Ops, Ishikawa turned to face Somerset and asked, "Sir, do you think any of Corsair made it out?" Somerset looked at him and replied, "At the moment, I'm beginning to doubt it." Suddenly Ishikawa's station sounded an alert. "Commander, single ship transiting through the jumpgate." "Can you make anything out?" He glanced curiously and replied, "Yes, sir. It's FTL signature matches that of the Graf Spee. Commander Gallion's ship. Shall I plot an intercept course?" "Not yet. Melanie, contact 2nd and 3rd Squadrons, and inform them to rendevous with the Graf Spee. We'll hold position just in case he's got company behind him." Finally... Somerset thought. Sure did have to wait long enough on him. I wonder where the rest of his ships are? Throughout Rinaal, 10 Battlecruisers moved to rendevous with Gallion, discarding the protective cloaks that prevented any enemy ships from detecting them. But, the Gammulan Fleet had moved on, not leaving a single ship in Rinaal. Finally, when the coast looked clear, Somerset ordered, "Mr. Ishikawa, I want to rendevous with the Graf Spee. Melanie, inform the rest of the Squadron to follow, formation Delta. Kamarov, disengage cloak." The officers acknowledged their orders as the 5 Battlecruisers slowly showed themselves, and approached the Graf Spee. Until they got closer, Somerset found it difficult to see the damage on the black ship which bore a skull and crossbones on the prow. Just like Gallion, going completely against regulations... Somerset said to himself. Even so, his ship appeared to have taken significant damage. From her station, Winforth informed him, "Sir, 2nd Squadron reports that they've transported repair materials to the Graf Spee, and one of their shuttles is making a cargo sweep." "Very well," Somerset said. "Hail the Graf Spee." Gallions tired face appeared on the viewscreen, and Somerset said "You sure took your sweet ass time Commander Gallion!" Gallion made an expression Somerset couldn't quite read, and said "And hello to you too Ben. I had some difficulty with the natives. I see that you had a little problem of yer own on yon star station. I told ye to get an exterminator to take care of that rodent problem ye had awhile back. Ye didnÔÇÖt have to go that far...or to such extremes," Gallion said pointing towards the empty shell that had once been Wraith-HQ. "How is the rest of the Fleet doing?" he asked seriously. "The best that can be expected. It could've been far worse. Where's the rest of your Wi...," he managed to say before being cut off. Gallion looked at him sternly as he said, "I am what is left of Corsair Wing, Ben. Somerset could tell that was eating Gallion alive. Of all people, Somerset could understand, sending 32 of the ships under his command to their doom only yesterday. He was superseded by the Fleet Commander, and left behind. That was something he didn't like. Almost as much as he didn't like what he saw looking back at him in the viewscreen. He had heard many rumors about the wily Corsair, many of which were true. The man that was known throughout the Navy as being a loner, rogue, and a maverick. Hell, even the Insurgents knew him as such. That was something Somerset could barely stand. Even though, Gallion was a man of honor, and thus had Somerset's respect, even if he was an extreme nonconformist. He looked the other man directly in the eye, and asked "What are your plans, Commander?" "My plans?ÔÇØ Gallion said as a question then continued in confidence, "My plans Commander Somerset are to fix the Graf Spee and then do what Corsairs do best. Ye and yers are invited to join in the fun if ye like." Gallion then grinned a wicked grin. Somerset had rarely seen it, but knew where it would lead. Before he could say anything, Gallion said "By the way, ye wouldnÔÇÖt happ'n to have any bubblegum now would ye?" At the aubsurdity of that remark, Somerset's British humor asserted itself, and he laughed. His own officers turned to see their Commander doubled over in laughter, having the best laugh he had had in years. As he laughed, Gallion's wicked grin turned into a sincere smile as he too laughed at the lunacy of his question. After his laughter subsided, Somerset's serious expression returned as he asked, "After your repairs are complete, I say we go and give the Gamms in Hadar-IX a rear assault the like of which they have never seen. It's time they see this War as a big mistake. Would you care to join me?" He settled back into his chair, and eagerly awaited his fellow officers reply. [RP] 2010 March 14, 3008 Undetermined Location Rinaal, Cyrian GCV Swiftsure The red lights continued flashing across the dimness of the bridge. As they did so, they played across the impatient expression of Benjamin Somerset, with his hands steepled in front of his face. This war had gotten off to a very shaky start. If it weren't for a lucky malfunction, the entire G-2 grid would have been ineffective against the enemy. Fortunately, luck had been in their favor, and the 100 nuclear minds had worked, tearing the enemy force in Rinaal apart. The idea was a crazy one, one that could only come from that wily Corsair. Somerset always did perfer proper military decorum, while the Corsair Gallion did not. Every time those Corsair ships went to the Station, they caused unneccessary trouble. Trouble Somerset could live without. There was always some Corsair in the brig, and another repair job to be done in one of the bars on the Promenade. They were troublemakers of the first degree, and Gallion did nothing to hold them in check. Somerset on the other hand, ran a tight ship. If rumor was to be heeded, it was one of the tightest in the Navy. He always wanted decorum, efficency, and good performance. His crew had always delivered him that, and more. After today, he was going to get commendations for each and every one of them. If he could ever get out of Rinaal. He didn't know why Londono had chosen him and his two remaining squadrons from SIN Wing to remain behind, and wait for the remnants of Corsair Wing. By this time, the only remnants would be flotsam scattered across the entire Gammulan Quadrant. Why should he wait for something that would never come? "Bloody hell," he said. "Anything on the sensors, Number One?" "Only enemy ships passing through the region, Commander. Still no sign of Corsair ships," Soran replied. "Mr. Ishikawa?" Somerset inquired. "Jumpgate sensors aren't registering any Navy affiliated FTL signatures transiting. I guess the Corsairs just ran out of luck." "Agreed." Somerset couldn't stand waiting any longer. Something needed to be done, and be done quickly. He formulated a plan, and began to put it into action. Before anything even had a chance to happen, a chime sounded in his headset. "Priority message for you, Commander," Melanie said from Comms. "Bloody hell," Somerset said for the umpteenth time that day as he opened the message and read it. He shook his head and silently cursed as he ordered, "All ships, return to holding positions. We've recieved word from Corsair Wing. Melanie, forward this to the Group in Tyrus II. They'll make better use of it than they will in Hadar-IX." Being honest with himself, Somerset wished he was in Hadar with them. Fighting the good fight against insurmountable odds again. So very many had already died today, most of them due to Somerset. He had the feeling that the Gammulans would curse his name for the rest of time. His decisions had bought Wraith precious time, and obliterated the vaunted Gammulan Second and Fourth Orders. They'll have a hard time replacing those caliber of soliders, Somerset thought. But instead of being there in the thick of battle, he had to sit and hide, waiting for Corsair. "Damn them. Damn them all." Somerset said to himself, cursing his orders, and the fact that the Corsairs managed to get themselves caught behind the fence, again. [/RP] The "Bloody hell," could only have come from me. Hope it meets with approval Gallion. Just wonder what ye be havin' in mind. ------------------ Cmdr. Thomas, I noted on your Fleet Structure I am listed as on patrol, unassigned, or MIA. At present (according to RP), I am assigned as Prime Fleet Liason Officer to Wraith Fleet, on Temporary Duty (TDY). Though I do suppose I should have reported in for the Prime Fleet Rollcall, as I am still assigned to the Fleet at present. ------------------ Cmdr. This may be off topic, but I felt that it should be mentioned. No offense to Timski, but the only people that are allowed the have the rank of Fleet Commander are those promoted directly by the SC. Also, your ship designation should be GCV, instead of CGV. Of course, this could be from some other RPG, in which case, I present my most humble apologies. Just thought you should be aware. In fact, IIRC, most US attack submarines are commanded by Commanders (O-5). Ballistic missile subs are commanded by Captains (O-6). At last I heard, Ristar was coming up with a definitive rank structure (at least for the GCN). Any progress, Ristar? ------------------ Cmdr. It's way past time for this. Get ready, it's a long one. [RP] Location: Cyron V, Cyron Date: 14 March, 3008. 1550 hrs. GCV Sutherland Susan Howard, the tactical officer looked at TacOps intently, looking for any sign of more ships jumping into the region. Finally, she turned to face Commander Newhome, and said "Commander, I think that may be all of them. There have been no transits in the last 8 minutes." Newhome looked over at her and asked "How many ships were there?" "Sensors indicated 368 transits ma'am. I estimate their force to be of 2 Order strength, including 51 Stormcarriers." Howard reported. The whole bridge crew gasped. The enemy force would outnumber their own Fleet by over 6 to 1. In Stormcarriers alone, the Gammulans nearly had as many ships as all those in Rinaal. Newhome looked grim as she thought about the prospects of defending Rinaal. "How long until all the enemy vessels have entered Pravis?" she asked the Ops officer. "All transits will be complete in 22 minutes, Commander. Half the enemy fleet has already made the jump to Pravis." he replied. "Very well. Feed the course to the fluxfield to the Helm. Number One, I want to wait 30 minutes, and then were getting the hell out of here. Communications, send of message to the Swiftsure. No enemy transits in last 10 minutes. Total enemy count, 368 ships. Will hold position for 30 minutes, and withdraw to friendly space. Good luck, and Godspeed." Newhome ordered. The crew of the Sutherland prayed for those in Rinaal, for they had even less of a snowball's chance than those who fought in the first Gammulan incursion nearly 8 years ago. They would fight a desperate fight against innumerable odds this day. A day that would never be forgotten. -------------- Location: Pravis, Cyrian Date: 14 March, 3008. 1550 hrs. GCV Rodney The nimble Starcarrier was rocked to one side as they were hit again by weapons fire. "Shields at 60%!" the tactical officer yelled. "Come to 103 mark 211, 3/4 impulse. Attack pattern Echo. Let's go get that Aestrom!" Conner ordered. Rodney groaned as she was forced onto her new course. The Aestrom had its attention turned toward another ship, and never saw the Rodney coming. Weapons fire lanced out to hit the enemy ship. Combined with two Vagrants in quick succession, the Aestroms shields overloaded and collapsed. Flashes of light played across her hull as the Rodney struck her bare armor. "Commander! The Aestroms weapons are down, and she appears to have severe engine damage. She's slowing, dropping below quarter impulse." the XO reported. The Communications Officer said from his console "Commander, Charile Squadron reports being overwhelmed. They're pulling back to Mobile Position 1." "How many enemy ships are there?" Conner asked. "Charlie Squadron reports 174, sir. Transits are now occuring every 1.8 seconds." the Tactical Officer reported. "Navigation, set course for Rinaal." Conner said, as he used his command console to open a communications channel. "All ships, this is Rodney. We're pulling back. Charlie Squadron, cover our retreat, and follow behind. Rodney out. Status of the enemy fleet?" Glancing at his TacOps screen, the Tactical Officer reported "They're all still at impulse speed, Commander. Probably conserving their jump charge for the jump to Rinaal." "All ships acknowledge orders, Commander. Alpha, Bravo, and Delta Squadrons on course for the jumpgate. Reports indicate enemy losses at 2 destroyed, 17 disabled. Bravo Squadron reports one of their ships disabled, but under tow. All other Squadrons report no losses, and minimal damage." Comms reported. "Very well. Helm, engage hyperdrive. Tactical, drop a probe to monitor the enemy approach to the jumpgate. Communications, give me a channel to the Swiftsure." "Aye, sir." As the face of Benjamin Somerset appeared on the viewscreen, Conners advance force quickly flew into hyperspace, and prepared for another battle. The first major battle of what Conner expected to be a very long war. ------------------- Location: Rinaal, Cyrian Date: 14 March, 3008. 1555 hrs GCV Swiftsure Benjamin Somerset sat in the command chair and waited. He hated waiting, especially in this sort of situation. The cup of Earl Grey came up slowly, as Somerset took a drink. His face skewed in disgust at finding the tea had grown cold. This endless waiting had also given the Commander a chance to think. At the moment, the thought most prevelent in Somerset's mind was that of his wife. There was a more than fair chance that he would never see her again. The Fleet's only purpose here was to buy time. Time for other forces to gather, and repel the Gammulan assault. That meant many brave people that would fight here today would never go home. The fact that he may be one of those did not scare Somerset. The idea he would never see Jessica again, however, instilled a sense of fear in him he had never felt before. The first time he was married, Somerset did not even pay the idea of his demise, and the affect it would have on his wife, any mind. He was more worried about his ship, than his now ex-wife. It was one of the main reasons he had gotten divorced. He was married to his ship, and not her. But he knew that what he had with Jessica was different. For the first timein his life, Somerset knew he was in love. He could tell her anything, and took comfort and pleasure in doing the simplest things with her. Without even realizing it, Somerset began twirling the ring on his left hand, and staring at the picture of her he had on his command console. The thing he wanted most, was to get out of this alive, so he could see his wife again. But, like he had always done, Somerset would do his duty. There was a job to do, and he would do it to the best of his ability, or die trying. "Commander, incoming message from the Sutherland." Winforth said, interrupting Somerset's train of thought. "Let's hear it," Somerset ordered. Winforth pulled it up and said "Message is as follows: No enemy transits in last 10 minutes. Total enemy count, 368 ships. Will hold position for 30 minutes, and withdraw to friendly space. Good luck, and Godspeed.." The bridge fell silent as the crew sized up the odds. "Two Order strength...368 ships..." Ishikawa murmured from his post. "Stand easy, mister," Somerset said, silencing the other officer. "Number One, your opinion?" "I believe that a successful defense would be futile. Our forces are outnumbered 6 to 1. It is illogical to attempt to fight such a force." Soran said. Somerset pointed out, "But we also have the station, and the minefields." "They still outgun us 4 to 1, Commander. We are still greatly outnumbered," Soran retorted. "Vhat are our chances?" Kamarov bluntly asked. Soran replied, "I calculate our odds at 52%, and the Fleet's at 41.6%." Before anyone could reply, Winforth informed Somerset, "Sir, incoming transmission from the Rodney." This was it. "Put it through," Somerset said. "This is Conner, sir. Our position is overwhelmed, and we're pulling back to Rinaal. the face on the viewscreen reported. "What is your status?" Somerset asked. Conner replied "All ships accounted for, sir. Charlie Squadron is covering our retreat. One ship was disabled, but she's under tow. All other vessels are combat capable." "Enemy damage and numbers?" "They lost 2 vessels, another 17 disabled. We didn't manage to get any of the Stormcarriers, though. They just barreled right through us. At last count there were 185 enemy vessels in the region, and we'll be making our jump in 2 minutes." "How far behind are they?" "They're remaining at impulse, sir. We think they're conserving their jump engines. ETA on the enemy Fleet is 15 minutes from our last ship jumping in." "Very well. Once you arrive, take up Mobile Position III at 115 km, defensive formation Delta." "Acknowledged, sir. We're on our way. Rodney out." The GCN logo appeared on the viewscreen with the words END TRANSMISSION directly below it. Immediately after, the screen returned to the standard forward view, showing the dark starfield ahead of them. Except for the usual comm chatter from belowdecks, the bridge was silent. In all their years together, they had never faced such odds against them. For the first time in his 19 years as a Navy officer, Benjamin Somerset found himself in a no-win situation. Any form of victory in this situation was untenable. Their only hope was to hold back the advance for as long as they could, evacuate the remaining personnel on the station, and withdraw with as little losses as possible. But Somerset knew that was impossible, unless... Unless you change the rules, the thought came unbidden into his mind. "Melanie, get me the Hood on a secure link, Priority I," he said, a course of action now firmly planted in his mind. Changing the rules indeed... he thought to himself. "Aye, sir." she said, complying with his order. This is the Hood. Go ahead." "Commander, you are familiar with the Omega defensive plans, are you not?" Bush's face was questioning as he replied, "Um, yes sir, I am." "Then you are aware of plan Omega III." The other mans face visibly flushed as he answered "Yes, sir. Are you intending to implement the plan?" "I am," Somerset stated matter of factly. "The computer requires two consenting officers of command rank. I require your assistance." Bush pulled himself together and replied, "Understood. Whenever you're ready, sir." Somerset left the channel open as he activated part of his command console. "Computer, recognize Commander Benjamin Somerset, and access secure link Gamma 24." 'Acknowledged. Secure link established. Enter command.' "Computer, access and execute Omega III protocalls." 'That command function is restricted. Two command authorizations required.' "Execute protocall Omega III. Authorization Somerset 2-5-Alpha-Tango." The computer sounded it's verification of carrying the order out. Somerset nodded at Bush, who was still on the viewscreen. He saw Bush jab at his own console, and say "Computer, execute protocall Omega III. Authorization Bush 4-1-Sierra-Sierra." 'Command Authorizations confirmed. Execution complete. G-2 Units responding to command.' "Computer, arm G-2 Units, authorization Somerset 2-5-Alpha-Tango." 'G-2 Units armed. Awaiting further command' the computer intoned hollowly. "Hood, hold your position, and await further orders. Swiftsure out." Somerset said, and Bush's face disappeared, replaced by the GCN logo. Up at the helm, McAllister looked at Ishikawa and inquired quietly "G-2 Units?" Ishikawa looked back with the same questioning look, and replied "Never heard of it." "Melanie, get me HQ on a secure link," Somerset ordered. "Aye, sir," she said, wondering what this was all about. Commander Matasuke appeared on the screen "Go ahead, Swiftsure." "Commander, how many personnel are still aboard the station?" Somerset asked. "There are still 500 aboard. 300 Marines guarding the secure areas, and 200 techs manning weapons, communications, and the reactors." "Is this link secure?" Somerset said suspiciously. Matasuke looked questioningly as he replied "It is, sir." "I want you to review the Omega III defensive plan, and prepare to evacuate the station on my order." Somerset waited as Matasuke accessed the data, and looked it over. "You can't be serious..." he said as his voice drifted off. "I am. The plan is designed for enemy forces outnumbering us 5 to 1, and no possibility of reinforcement. We are outnumbered 6 to 1, and there is no possibility for reinforcement. Corsair Wing is probably decimated, and still caught behind enemy lines. All other forces are being sent elsewhere. The situation calls for the Omega III plan." "Sir, I must object to this course of action." Somerset didn't have time for this. "Your objection is noted. The plan is still going ahead, Commander. Carry out your orders." "Aye, sir. However, I intend to put a formal protest in my log, as this is a flagrant violation of the Credian Accords." "Very well. I look forward to reading it. Somerset, out," he said, cutting the transmission. The rest of the bridgecrew sat dumbfounded, unable to concieve of what actions might violate the Credian Accords. But with the desperation of the situation, none of them would argue if it increased the odds for survival. Not even Soran. Deep down, he wanted to get out of this as much as everyone else. Somerset brought up a communications screen at his console, and prepared a message. -----Begin Transmission----- To: Fleet Commander Londono, CINCWRTHFLT Fm: Commander Somerset, GCV Swiftsure Sb: Omega III Priority I Our forces outnumbered 6 to 1. Believe there is no alternative but to execute Omega III defensive plan, and implement G-2 Units. God help me for what I am about to do. Will see you at Tyrus II. Respectfully, Ben ------End Transmission------- A flash of light signalled the entrance of a new ship into the region. The mines surrounding the gate took an IFF reading, determining the target to be friendly. Conners advance force was starting to arrive, and the Gammulan Navy wouldn't be far behind. The Gammulans probably thought that this would be an easily fought, easily won battle. Odds of 6 to 1, and a starstation being the only thing in their way. They were in for a big surprise.
