  1. I've been using WinXP for about 2 weeks on the minimum requirements pretty much (PII-300 64 MB RAM) and it's great. Stable (meaning no OS crashes!). Anyway, using the compatibility mode, I've gotten 1 game working that didn't work on 2K (Madden 2000) and in the Microsoft newsgroups I've heard about some others. I'd recommend XP but whatever you do, CLEAN INSTALL. DO NOT UPGRADE EVEN IF MICROSOFT SAYS IT'S SAFE TO. IT WILL BE BUGGY IF YOU UPGRADE!!!!! Sorry for the shouting but that's my advice
  2. I gotta see this... too damn funny.
  3. Oh OK - I had thought that Centron was a raider station, but I looked it up again and found it was trader so that's why I was able to dock to it. Thanks for your help!
  4. So I should stay away from Raider stations too? I haven't had any problems with them (yet).
  5. OK, I just re-read the Castes appendix. So Insurgents attack Galcom ships - I get that. Any other castes stations to avoid? I haven't had a problem with raider stations (yet).
  6. First of all, is there any appendix or section of the manual that explains diplomacy in detail? Something I can read that I might have missed? Second, my question is what does "Passive" mean? I see Empirians-Vesperons: Hostile. Clear enough. Then Terrans-Vesperons: Passive. And also, when I went to Sygan (Terran), it turned into an enemy station. That really confused me. Can someone explain diplomacy for me?
  7. Yea, I let the BattleCruiser sit in the middle of the debris field by the Moon, and ordered 2 shuttles to cargosweep. The first shuttle picked up one cargo pod then headed for Earth, and the second immediately headed to Earth. I dunno what happened there, but it only happened that once. I've had no other problems with debris fields. As for the illegal items, I will do some searching, but what I started doing is leaving them on my BC while using a shuttle to dock to Galcom stations. And I towed an SOS guy to HQ and got 35 EP but no money This game is great - wide, complex, free flow. Only thing it's missing is a training mode because it brings everything to you at once. The last thing a newbie needs is intruders on board 10 min into the game.
  8. No, I've never touched BCM. I'm just learning how to play BC3K right now.
  9. OK, it took me half an hour to figure out how to use the debris fields (out of my own stupidity). Anyway, I was at a debris field near moon, ordered Cargosweep to my shuttle, he got 1 cargo then started heading for the Earth... not good... So I restore an older game and beam the cargo manually using Tacops then I dock at Pluto with an illegal item on board and I get a violation. Doh! Is there any way to conceal illegal items or something when you dock to a Galcom station?
  10. fleet? Not quite sure what you mean. And if you know anyone else who plays Ares Rising, please direct them to the club. I've never played multiplayer before
  11. Do full install - Interplay makes really cheap CDs, and I have problems with the music on mine unless I full install. On full install, you don't need the CD to play. quote:Originally posted by LordDavid: I picked up Ares Rising for 10$ about a year ago.... not worth it IMO.....Its buggy, and my cd drive has lots of troubles reading the disc. Right now I'm playing Independence War 2 and likeing it. [ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: LordDavid ]
  12. The "lag" bit is just my theory of why the game plays so much more difficult on D3D. Either the graphics lag so you don't instantly know when you're hit, or the AI is tougher. Neither sounds reasonable. Anyway, come over to the Ares Rising "club" (it only has 2 people) at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/aresrisingclub and maybe we can set up a game sometime. Or drop me your e-mail address sometime. And I dunno how far you've gotten in the game, but the plot is so ironical. I don't want to spoil any of it for you though...
  13. Demolition, wanna play some time? I love the game. Here are the bugs I know of: D3D mode is very unstable and lags. By lags, I mean what actually happens is seen by you a full second after it happens, e.g. in DirectDraw mode, you see instantly when your ship's shields are hit, allowing you to turn and react. In D3D, you see that your shields are hit a full second after, so that by the time you see your shields are hit, you've already taken large damage to them. In DIB mode, when you start, the game randomly fires stuff. Buggy. Only mode that is stable is DirectDraw. With DirectX 8 or higher, it too is unstable with some video cards. Another problem I noticed is the random mission generator. Once you get far enough in the game, the missions don't match their descriptions at times, e.g. Description says "Kill Slacker" when the actual mission is "Scout the Hokaido system", etc. But I still love the game Beat it on Easy, and now I'm stuck at Get the Index on Medium.
