  1. Can anyone think of a reason why I can't program a destination into the Navitron computer? When I left-click on a system, nothing happens, i.e. it doesn't appear in the Destination slot like it's supposed to. I checked Logistix to make sure the Navitron is at 100% repair, and it is. I also checked to make sure there's power to it, and there is. Autopilot is off, and I cleared the previous destination manually via the NID. Nevertheless, I can't choose a new destination for some reason. Like I said, left-clicking simply has no effect. Am I missing something (probably), or is the durned thing just acting up?
  2. Oh, wait. You'd have to be running BCMG if we're talking about multiplayer. Doh! Well, anyway, let's make sure we're all on the same page. Check the version.
  3. Plus there's the fact that he did try setting the password string and that still didn't work. It would seem that the problem isn't with the password function itself, but with something else. Splad, you are running BCMG and not BCM, right? If so, what version are you running? Let's all make sure we're patched up to the most current level (as of 12/12/03: version 1.01.01).
  4. Yes, yes, yes! Thanks, guys, and especially Spindoktor. Not only does the gate have to be targeted, it has to be showing in the vid. Not sure why that is, although it may be explained in the manual and I just forgot. I'll read up on it tonight before I go to sleep. Thanks again!
  5. Thanks. I'll give this a try, although I'm pretty sure I had the gate targeted and in the vid. I had just HJ'ed to it. But maybe not. We'll see.
  6. Not sure if this is the proper place for this, but... I'm in the Saturn region, which has only one entrance/exit: a jumpgate. However, when I try to jump out of the system, I can't. My ship just flies right on through the gate as if it's not even there, and I remain in the Saturn region. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make the gate operate correctly? Thanks much.
  7. They've never topped Court of the Crimson King, imo. Unfortunately, I can't imagine listening to that while playing BCMG. It has a whole different set of references for me. It's not "outer space" music at all. The soundtrack from "2001: A Space Odyssey" fits the bill much more nicely.
  8. That so-called "review" doesn't have one thing to do with either Derek or BCMG. It's all about the author, who is clearly some teenager who thinks having read Usenet makes him look cool and in-the-know to his readership. In other words, he thinks Smart-bashing will earn him points with the even-stupider-than-he-is crowd...and he's probably right. So what? The proper way to look at the whole episode is as an exercise in recreational Darwinism: morons obligingly weeding themselves and their ilk out from our presence. The thing to fear, really, is the day these morons ever actually get a clue and come knocking on the door, asking to be let in. Yuck.
  9. Man. Those are some impressive shots. I'm a sucker for colored lights, so the first two or three got my attention, but when I got to those base and terrain shots, I really got excited. You're now right up there with the best of the flight sims in the terrain and ground-modeling department! Very, very nice. BCG is going to be a top-tier game all the way.
  10. Ok, I read 'em. Then I joined a multiplayer game without any problems whatsoever. Great job. It runs smooth as silk and it's filled with yummy gaming goodness to boot. Take that, o ye lurking doubters... (Sorry if I shouldn't have posted this here, but I didn't want to start a new thread, either. Just wanted to say thanks!)
  11. quote:Originally posted by Tyrn: Having said that, here's my thoughs on mining: Drop your drones and go on about your normal BC business. Come back when they're full and empty them. Lather, rinse, repeat.Yep. This is the method I've been using. Works like a charm. There's little point in hanging around waiting for your drones to finish mining, since they don't seem to attract any enemies that you need to protect them from. (YMMV, however. That's just been my experience so far!)

You actually made me spill my drink all over myself with that one! Thanks, guys, for all the suggestions. I can see that I'm not that far off the mark after all. I just need more practice, which I'm going to get. I'm determined to become proficient at every level in this game.
  13. I launched my whole load of missiles at him (which was another reason I let the second guy go) and none of them hit. I figure he must have been jamming them, since none of them even tried to curve in his direction. I mainly just kept launching them when I was close, hoping I'd get a lucky hit. Never did. Also, I was matching speed with him, like the thread you posted suggests. Didn't do any good, other than to allow me to stay with him easier. Like I said, if I tried to use the afterburners to close with him, he'd immediately (and I'm talking immediately) jump back out to 1.5 or 2 clicks, which seemed to be the distance he liked to stay at. What gets me about that is if he's really able to move like that, why didn't he just zip away from me instead of remaining 1.5 clicks away? He could have easily done it. I felt like there was some funny business going on there, but Derek says the AI doesn't cheat, so either it's legit or it's some kind of bug. Anyway, I'm frustrated
  14. Can anybody give me any pointers on how to dogfight in this game? I've been playing flight sims for years, but I can't hit a darned thing with these fighters. Even when I'm closing with an enemy in a straight line head-on and I've got him dead in my sights, my shots don't land, while his usually do. What's the secret here? I spent about a half-hour trying to down a single fighter last night, and when he finally popped I had no energy (or eyesight) left to take on his buddy. I just said screw it and let him kill me. Also, how come when I use the afterburner to try to get in close, as soon as my finger comes off the button the bogie zips away again? If he can fly so darned fast, why does he only do it when I close with him? Grr.
  15. Ok. Now I understand. Thanks, guys.
  16. Will the game automatically rest my officers for me, or do I have to do it manually? I've been doing it manually, just because I didn't want to wait until they died of exhaustion to find out for sure. Also, I didn't want to risk having a crucial position unmanned if the shit hit the fan. So what I've been doing is docking at a starstation and twiddling my thumbs for a half-hour or so while they rest. Is that the proper method? Am I doing it right? Also, what happens if a station is destroyed while I'm docked there? The obvious thing? If so, is there any way for me to monitor what's going on outside so I can avoid this? Thanks. (Oh, btw. I don't want to start a new thread for this, but are the meters for the PTA and Main Gun supposed to change to reflect the level they're set at? Right now they don't. They always read 100%.)
  17. Woo woo! I'm famous! Sorta. (Geez. I love that dancing banana. How sad is that?)

  19. At the risk of wearing out my welcome, I've got some more questions. I've tried to find the answers to these in the manual, in the appendix, and by searching the archives here, but I've been unsuccessful. Hope I didn't miss something obvious. 1) What does the color blue (not cyan) signify in the TACSCAN (in SPC mode--not SUL mode)? I don't see blue in the list of colors for the TACSCAN on either page 35 or 117, but I'm definitely seeing blue-colored dots flying around on it. 2) Am I correct in deducing that it is not possible to infiltrate hostile craft with my own Marines via the Transporter? I assume that in order to do that, I'd need to be able to select the craft as a Target via the TACOPS computer, but for the Transporter it only gives me the option to set a position via the map (or at least it did the one time I tried it). This old thread would seem to indicate you can do it, however: Pre-BCM discussion So I'm confused. Topic changed to make it descriptive and useful. 20. Notice two things: first, there are only two scores given to BCMG over the course of 15 reviews: five stars and one star. That tells you right there that there's something else going on besides a game review. Second, note the dates of the so-called "reviews." Except for the first five, they all predate BCMG's release. Why EBGames allows "reviews" to be posted for games that haven't even been released yet is beyond me, but BC is not the only game to suffer from it. Wise EBGames shoppers already know that EBGames customer "reviews" are less than worthless and don't even waste their time reading them--or at least I don't.

  22. quote:Originally posted by Supreme Cmdr: What did you change it to, btw?Hehe. I was so happy that it finally changed that I didn't notice until later it didn't change to the font I wanted. I think it must default to courier if it can't find microgbe, because it's using courier or a courier-type font now. Which is ok. It's still easier to read. The one I wanted to use is called Federation (FEDN.TTF). It's just a freebie I picked up somewhere. Might be Star Trek related, but I don't know. I'm not into Star Trek. I did change some of the HUD graphics last night to get rid of a lot of those orange icons. The ones that display the actual asset involved, such as the command craft and fighter icons, I left as is, but the rest I changed to plain text. It just looks neater and more modern to me, and they're easier to interpret to boot. The only problem is I don't know how to do the masking, so instead of having transparent backgrounds, they now have black backgrounds. But I can live with that. quote:Keep practicingOh, trust me. I'm under no illusions that I'm any good. There's obviously way more going on in the game than I can master in a week. I'm just celebrating the fact that I can do more than press the accelerator and steer now Last night I was orbiting a moon while my drones mined away, thinking I was all cool and everything. Then some cloaked bastage snuck up behind me and blasted me to kingdom come. Several hours of gameplay went up in smoke, but man, was I impressed. A human player couldn't have done it any better.
  23. Hmm. Something's just not following orders and I don't quite know why. Oh well. I got the HUD font to change so I'll leave it at that. The Frontend fonts never changed doing it the FAQ way. Here's what the FAQ says to do: quote:Q. THESE FONTS SUCK!! HOW DO I REPLACE THEM? A. BCM uses different types of fonts at various areas. You can change them by editing the BCMCONFIG.INI file directly. The kernel fonts are those used in the 3D game world. The frontend fonts are those used in screens such as Logistix etc. Just enter the name of the font you'd like to use and save the file. To revert to the BCM defaults, remove those lines from the file the use the fonts applet in control panel to install the font located in the DATA folder where BCM is installed.I've done all this. Either I'm missing something obvious, or it just doesn't work the way it's supposed to. But either way, it's not important. The Frontend fonts are fine, as far as I'm concerned. It was the HUD font I wanted to change, and I've got it changed now. Thanks for the help. Hehe. My mouth is really starting to water for multi now that I'm getting a handle on the game. I'm actually making money now and killing stuff and managing my crew right, so I don't feel quite as helpless as I did at first. 'Course, I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't driving a carrier. I haven't figured out yet how people survive as scientists or traders...
  24. Can someone tell me how to change the fonts in BCMG? I followed the directions in the Troubleshooting FAQ, but no matter what I do the old fonts still load up. Here's what I've done: 1) Edited bcconfig.ini to read: BCFEFontName=vibrocen ;arial BCFEFontSize=8 BCFEFontFlags=0 BCKFontName1=fedn ;microgbe BCKFontName2=nasaliza ;arial 2) Made sure the font filenames are correct and fonts are properly installed in Windows 3) Tried copying the font files to the /data directory 4) Tried it with .ttf extension, without .ttf extension, capitalized, and uncapitalized (the original filenames are capitalized and yes, they are TT fonts).
