I don't think it's that there's a steep learning curve, but rather that they don't know what to do with all the control they have within the unscripted, dynamic universe.

Do you have the 1990 edition of BOP?

I use the Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro. It is more of a programmable gamepad with motion sensors to act as a joystick by tilting the controller forward, back, left, and right. It saves on desktop footprint, saves my wrist and elbows by not having unusual motions, and lets me fly by waving my arms through the air.

Starting yesterday, my firewall detected 417 hits on my PC, and today it's already up to 157 hits. Prior to yesterday, the average number of hits was under 20. I wonder if the code red virus is causing infected pc's to ping the world or something. Have any of you seen a jump in your firewall logs or is this just something on the @home network?

What would be cool is if radar didn't work in debris fields (meaning if you're outside of one you can't see into it -- you have to go in to see), if raiders hid in debris fields (alone or in packs), if raiders dumped their loot in debris fields, if raiders dumping their loot in debris fields was the mechanism for refreshing debris fields... I'm heading for the airlock now, but it would be cool...

BC3K did not have the advanced planetary modeling that BCM has. The HALT command description that you quoted refers to halting in space. BCM has added the effects of gravity when in a planet's atmosphere, so even though you are halted, you are being pulled down to the surface. HALT is not keeping you stationary when there is an opposing force pulling you down.

I bet the Galaxians will attack in groups of two or three, and will make shrill whistle sounds before they shoot their missiles at you.

Balance of Power was one of the first games I bought for my old Apple //e. I sometimes still play the 1990 version on my PC. Great game. PKZIP: You make an interesting point that I hadn't really considered before. Hmmmm... Many of today's utilities started out as a need or desire filled by an entrepreneur years ago, like Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. At some point in their product's lifecycle, it became a crucial part of society such that its supply and access had to be guaranteed by the government. Shingen: The argument is really this: What would happen to society if the Microsoft OS were to suddenly and massively fail or no longer be accessible? What would happen to society if some people were denied access to Microsoft Windows? What would happen to society if Microsoft were to start charging everyone $50/month like cable companies do, or $150/month like some power companies do? How much do ISP's charge? Telephone? Sewage/garbage? Newspaper? If you had to put a monetary value on your connection to the rest of the world via your computer (and the software that makes it happen), what would it be? What would be the impact to you if you lost the Microsoft OS for a few hours or days? Just how pervasive is the deployment of the Microsoft OS?
