  1. The world has beccome a place of global darwinism. There is no more shaking hands and being friends. We have all been set in our ways for hundreds of years and change isn't coming any time soon. And if it does ever come, it'll be too late to help any of us. In the mean time, we can't just sit here and take punches all day because we're afraid of hurting somebody's feelings. If they hit us, and we cower, they will be empowered by it, and that is the entire point behind terrorism. They're trying to be righteous, but in actuality they are bully side-kicks of the former Soviet Union in a world that left them behind long ago. They've had no purpose in their lives for 50 years and have only Islam to live for. However, those ideals can be perverted quite easily, and nothing is more dangerous than a man who believes god is on his side.

So what do we do? We can just ignore it and pretend it's not happening. That didn't work. We can try blowing to them bits. That sort of worked for the time being. Now we're trying to win over their hearts and minds. This one NEVER works because it usually takes people more than a year or 2 to forget that we blew up their neighborhood and killed their whole family, but we always go back to that one when we run out of ideas.

These people are undefeatable at the moment because they are fighting for something that is larger than themselves. They have a will that drives them on no matter what. We have to strike at that will. But where does it lie? What exactly is it that they're fighting for? Sure, we've all heard about the conflict between Israel and Palestine, but anyone with half a brain can see that it's regurgitated rhetoric to stir up the masses. Afterall, the Palestinians were the disowned bastard children of the Middle East until they needed an excuse to stir up trouble. The brains behind all of these terrorist organizations are working toward some higher goal, and until we find out what that is, we'll just have to rely on kicking ass.

  2. Maybe this is just me, but does anyone else out there not understand how these kinds of games are fun? I mean, where is the merit in running up to random monsters, pressing A and watching attack animations until something dies? It would be one thing to pay $50 for that game, but to pay $50 just for the ability to open the box and then another (at least) $10 per month just to play? Hah! I might consider delving into this genre eventually if they ever make a real skill-based MMORPG, but... are there any on the horizon?

  3. quote:

if we did what he suggests, we'd that be much farther along the path to abolishing war.

If we did what he suggests, the United States would be nothing more than a barren, cratered landscape. Man has fought since its beginning, and it will fight until its end. It's human nature. Even small children (actually, they're the worst) maliciously taunt and hurt each other. Even though people try not to admit it, and want to stand on the moral high-ground, nothing is so thrilling as handing your foe a well-delivered ass-kicking(well, at least for me, but I may also be a sadistic bastard). Even if we somehow abolished the military (afterall, we are supposed to be ashamed of military personnel, right?), all those other malicious and sadistic people who want what we have will try and take it from us. It is the universal truth. Weakness draws aggression.

Grizzle, maybe you're right that I misinterpreted that statement, but what the author is trying to propose (disband the military, hold hands in the sunshine and skip happily through a field of sunflowers) is just plain silliness. As terrible and gruesome as war may be, without it, we would have nothing. Without the men and women who go and fight wars for us, we would have nothing, and I think it is wrong of the author to denounce the military without acknowledging this much.

  5. Jag, they're right. That wasn't just a rebuttle, that was a flame and a half full of seething anger. You, of all people, are usually one to frown upon such a thing. I don't see why you should get so emotional over this. Street may be hilariously and irrevocably clueless, but I don't think it was right of you to resort to such a spiteful personal attack. Afterall, the description of this forum is: "This forum is for intelligent discussions about politics & region. No flaming. No rudeness. And no Taliban!" I'm pretty sure you broke all three of these rules in one fell swoop. Now back to the issue at hand...

    quote:

Duty and sacrifice are the myths with which old men send young men off to die.

This is the only statement I agree with. I believe it is simply a clever disguise to hide what war is: savagery and murder. No matter what war, what time, and at what place, this constant never changes. We all like to conveniently forget that fact, so we can sleep at night when we send our soldiers into it. Having said that...

    quote:

Each time we see a man in uniform, a deep sense of defeat and shame should overcome us.

This statement makes me ill. It makes me want to murder the man who wrote that. I don't believe any man who sits around spouting off garbage for a living has any right to say a damn thing about the men and women who are dying for him. If people are getting on planes to the ******* of the world and facing imminent death to protect John Morris, some punk-ass kid living comfortably in his suburban home in New Jersey that they don't even know, I am eternally grateful; and I'll be damned before I say a bad word about them.

  7. If you are going to the theatres to see Hero to see a Kung Fu movie, go home. If you are too lazy to read subtitles, go home. If you want to see a movie with a captivating story, memorable characters, phenomenal cinematography, and acting that makes you believe that the people on screen are the real Nameless, Broken Sword, and Flying Snow, you have struck gold.

The first thing you have to know about this film, is that not everything is supposed to be taken literally. When all the flowers turn red in a certain fight scene (i'm not going to spoil it), you're not supposed to believe all the flowers ACTUALLY turned red. It is helping to depict something. I feel the way they filmed each scene with a differnt color and tone was a very clever way toexpress the personality of each character's versions of the story, not necessarily meaning that everything in the scene really was red or green or whatever. People too stupid to understand that end up walking out of the theatre complaining about the story not making sense.

The story of this film draws you in immediately, and more importantly, so do the characters. I give my thanks to god, heaven and whoever else influenced the decision to NOT dub this film, because the actors had such passion and magnetic charisma, that for the duration of the film, I forgot I was watching a movie, and that is a VERY hard thing to accomplish.

The ancient China setting, sword-fight scenes and over-the-top wirework, at first glance, remind you of a certain foreign film that begins with "C" and ends with "rouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Thus, many people walk into the theatre expecting "Crouching Tiger on Crack" but it is oh, so much more than that. There are subtleties in this movie that are not obvious, and if you go in expecting them to be pathetically conspicuous and thrown in your face like most American movies, you're going to miss a lot. Something that should be addressed is the wire-work. It is a tool used to excentuate their super-human fighting abilities, however I believe this is another something that is not meant to be taken entirely literally.

Basically what I'm saying is, if you look past the subtitles, walk into the theatre with an open mind, and pay attention, you will love it. Go see it.

  8. Forgive my uneducated intrusion (I usually don't participate much in politics) as I find that sorting through mountains of half-truths and exaggerations (on every side) is much too wearisome to be up to date on political discussion, but I want to say something.

Regardless of how brief his service was, at least Kerry WENT to the war at all; something Bush did not do (unless I am mistaken, which I very well may be). So, on this front, Kerry automatically has a 1-up on him, and no smoke-and-mirror tricks that Bush or anybody else can pull will disguise that fact.

  9. You know, I might have actually considered getting a Phantom if it wasn't for all of this 'premium games' business. I can see the angry mobs at Best Buy, now:

"So, let me get this straight. I have to pay $30 per month to have access to a bunch of mediocre games, and still get banged for the full price of any decent game? So, basically, I'm getting smacked with an extra $30 to save $5 of gas to go the mall? I have a better idea. It's called Amazon.com. Take this piece of trash back and cancel my subscription immediately."
