  1. Read this. Place the following into your signature: Recruit Badman, ECV Ashdod Vanguard Fleet You'll start out as a crewmember on my own ship (though I doubt our characters will even make it over to my ship on the Apogee mission). Then, advance your rank once each time you post in-character in the current RP mission - until I tell you to stop. We will work out a more permanent assignment for you, based on your char's experience commanding the Roman army, after the mission. Welcome to Vanguard Fleet, Badman!
  2. Commander Teknocack Prime, you are hereby assigned the rank of Sergeant Major. Please update your signature and include the Firestorm-class ECV Stormhammer. Congratulations, Commander!
  3. What I describe above is the career path for characters, in-universe. Player characters may start at any Sergeant rank, usually First Sergeant. Commander is a position not a rank.
  4. [RP] ShoHashi's office, 1347hrs "Ok, I'll bite," ShoHashi said. "What do you plan and what assurances do I have that this is not a trick?" "For starters, I'm offering designs for engine upgrades to you and to Shingen. They use parts and materials you already have, to give your capital craft and support craft the galaxy-crossing speed that allowed us to produce this map ahead of the Credians. Even wormholes will be obsolete now! No questions asked. You don't even need to agree to help me. The designs are yours, right now." He set a pad on the desk. "Commander Shingen, would you permit me to have this installed on your ship immediately?" "Beyond that, it is a lot easier for me to provide assurances for Commander Shingen than for you, Admiral." Rick turned to Shingen, not yet knowing about Mariko, "You're just one man with one ship. If you and your crew conducted your operations alone, or on an as-needed basis with your colleagues, that will make the following assurance for you easier." Rick turned back to ShoHashi, "Admiral I ask for a full pardon for anything Commander Shingen is alleged to have done to the Insurgents. My organization is prepared to pay some restitution but we are somewhat limited. I ask that he and his ship be free to go immediately." Hopefully that had convinced Shingen that Garrison was not against him. "My organization doesn't't have any beef with the Insurgents. Like you we generate revenue by many means all over the galaxy and have a substantial mercenary presence to boot. But you have nothing to worry about from us. Earth Command, on the other hand, did not ask for Insurgent help - only that I solicit individuals as I see fit to carry out this mission. You have my 20-plus-year service record and reputation as a Command Officer in Vanguard Fleet to protect you." "Badman, you offer a unique perspective that we could use in the field. I imagine you possess hand-to-hand combat skill unparalleled in this time. We need all the help we can get." Rick stood up this meeting had dragged on too long already. "Admiral, I don't need a lot of personnel or ships, just a few level-headed people who know what they're doing. I've seen how Commander Crossgrove administrates New Frontier, how Admirals Eclipse and Chavik co-lead this large movement with you. I imagine you're itching for some field action. BTW I suggest you transmit these new propulsion designs to ICV Daedalus asap. canshow likely already has the necessary materials in his cargo hold." Rick made a not on his pad and continued, "Here's my plan: If you agree to help us Shingen, and since you need a crew, I suggest we take the Deathstrike to Sol. Sho, Badman and I can be your crew for a little while. Admiral you can bring ICV Aries if you want but I think Daedalus' presence will draw plenty of attention by itself." Rick paused there, knowing the other three needed time to respond to this much before he could continue. "Gentlemen, if we could discuss the rest of this on the way?" he headed for the door. ---------- Middle docking pylon, UCV-Deathstrike, 1354hrs Osaki pleaded; "We are here to repair this ship!..Please don't kill us!" Mariko came out of her bloodlust and became aware of her surroundings. She took the ammo charges out of the weapon and handed it back to the tech. "Where is Shingen? Is he still alive?" "Yes, miss. I think he's talking with Admiral ShoHashi in his office up in the operations section." She sensed this Mariko was not going to hamper her teams effort further and ordered the other four out of hiding and back to work. The 20 additional engineers were just now boarding the ship with, among other upgrades, an entirely new propulsion lineup. When the Chief Petty Officer in charge met Mariko he put up his hands and said, "We're here to upgrade your engines and other systems. I promise you, we're not installing any sort of tracking device. Is this ok with you? Do you want to watch us or install it yourself to be sure?" ---------- ECV Ashdod, cloaked near starstation Alpha Prime in the Syrian Quadrant, 1402hrs "Nav, plot a direct hyperjump to the Daedalus from our current position. We must warn them about the blockade at SpectreHQ." "Course plotted for nav coordinates." The Sergeant First Class, Ashdod's XO, turned back to the viewscreen, "Engage." [/RP]
  5. Here's the short and sweet part in code. Enlisted Ranks, Command Officers, Commissioned Officers, Commandant Officers. Commandant General - Lieutenant General \ Major General \ Brigadier General \ Colonel \ Commissioned Officers Lieutenant Colonel / Major / Captain / First Lieutenant / Second Lieutenant - Commissioned Officer Candidate (CsOC) Command Sergeant Major - Sergeant Major \ First Sergeant \ Command Officers Sergeant First Class (SFC) / Staff Sergeant / Sergeant - Command Officer Candidate (CdOC) Corporal - Lance Corporal \ Enlisted Ranks Private First Class (PFC) / Private - Apprentice - Trainee | Enlisted Training Ranks Recruit - What these ranks are and mean in Vanguard Fleet is explained below. This is entirely new and specific for Earthcom. So throw out your pre-conceptions of 'non-coms' not commanding starships and whatnot. As you will see, the basic enlistedman is better-trained than a 21st century commissioned officer. All Earthcom personnel from Recruit to full General are known as Soldiers regardless of career or command status. Those of the marine careers are known as both Marines and Soldiers and may be addressed as either. Applicant - One applies for service to Earth Command by taking a set of entrance exams. If he passes, the recruiter draws up a contract with him to serve as a Pre-Enlistedman and an Enlistedman for a combined initial period of seven years. The contract states Earth Command will release the applicant from any further service obligation if he fails to pass recruit training. If the applicant accepts the contract the recruiter swears him into service for Earth Command and declares him recruited, a Pre-Enlistedman. Pre-Enlistedmen Recruit - The recruit undergoes a 13-week recruit training program, a 31st century equivalent to US Marine Boot Camp. Any recruit who fails a test while in boot camp is cycled back to an earlier point in the recruit training process, thus taking longer than 13 weeks to complete the program. He is given second chances to a point, determined case-by-case, and may be dropped. Dropped recruits are psychologically evaluated and are released from service obligation and discharged, free to return to civilian life. This sets minimum standards that not all Recruits will reach. When sworn in, the applicant commits to give it his best try. A dropped recruit is often commended for giving all he had to the effort, and not looked down upon for not making the cut. He may re-apply later and can, in the meantime, take advantage of many non-governmental educational resources to improve his chances of passing recruit training in the future. All Pre-Enlistedmen are trained, first and foremost, to be infantry. Upon graduation, Earthcom promotes the Pre-Enlistedman from Recruit to Trainee and his service contract then becomes binding. Trainee - A trainee receives classroom instruction or any other training not in the line of duty while he is still a Pre-Enlistedman. When the Pre-Enlistedman applied for service in Earthcom both parties brought something to the barganing table. Earthcom needed certain positions filled and the applicant had at least some idea of what he wanted to do in the military. Now as a trainee, he must finalize his initial training plan. From this point on, earthcom talors the Pre-Enlistedman's initial training to this plan and updates it as needed. Apprentice - Performs supervised duty in the field in each of his career specialties (like a 4th year cadet in Starfleet). Work completed at the grades of recruit, trainee, and apprentice equals a four year degree, even if completed in more or less than four years, and counts as part of the contracted seven year initial service period. If the Pre-Enlistedman's primary career specialty requires less training than this four year degree volume, he is given one or more secondary career specialties until the combined required training warrants this training volume (this will make him more versatile in the field). If his primary career specialty requires more than this volume, then his initial training stretches into the Enlisted grades (see Private). Nevertheless, once this training volume is completed, the Pre-Enlistedman is promoted to Private and becomes an Enlistedman. Enlistedmen Private - A Private has received the same level of training as a 21st century Commissioned Officer; one consequence is that Earthcom cannot train and equip as many Enlistedmen as Galactic Command or the Insurgents could on a similiar budget; this is also why Earthcom must limit second chances to recruits who fail tests while in recruit training. Like a 21st century Commissioned Officer being a leader in his day, a Private supervises and mentors any Apprentices in his field of influence. A Private and Apprentice complete the same duties. The only difference is that the Private is answerable for his own actions, where as the Apprentice's actions are the responsibility of any Private mentoring him. They are treated, but not addressed, the same by all higher ranked personnel; consequently an Apprentice is still accountable for his own actions so that he'll be motivated to do his best. Advanced careers require "graduate" training, ie. beyond that finished as an Apprentice. A Private becomes elligable for promotion to Private First Class after two years in-grade and receives that promotion automatically after seven years. Private First Class - A PFC has either completed, or is well on his way to completing, his initial training for his primary career specialty. A PFC is eligable to lead a Team of two or three personnel (including himself); but if there are no team leader positions open, a PFC may just keep a Private's position, albeit with increased pay and authority. He may issue orders to any other lower ranked personnel within his sphere of influence but then becomes responsible to their commanding officers for actions taken on his behalf. A Private First Class becomes elligable for promotion to Lance Corporal after two years and receives that promotion automatically after seven years. Lance Corporal - Enlistedmen have completed initial training for all but the most advanced of enlisted careers by the time they make Lance Corporal. A Lance Corporal must decide if he wants to conclude his Earthcom career as an Enlistedman or strive to make Command Officer. He becomes eligable for promotion to full Corporal after two years and receives that promotion automatically after seven years. Corporal - Full Corporal represents the highest rank atainable by an Enlistedman. It is a transitional rank, leading either to discharge from Earthcom or to a Command Officer career. A Corporal is eligable to lead a Squad of six to thirteen personnel (including himself); but if there are no squad leader positions open, a Corporal may just keep a Lance Corporal's position, albeit with increased pay and authority. He may issue orders to any other lower ranked personnel within his sphere of influence but then becomes responsible to their commanding officers for actions taken on his behalf. A Corporal becomes elligable for promotion to Sergeant after two years and receives that promotion automatically after seven years. Command Officers - A Command Officer is a proven leader. In addition to completing four years of initial training, he has served at least 8 years in the enlisted grades. Different grades of sergeant may command different classes of capital craft. Crew complements listed are standard or minimum. Some craft classes, especially unarmed transports, can facilitate larger crew profiles. Sergeant - Is qualified to command a Section of 14 to 26 personnel, ie a crew complement equal to or greater than an unarmed transport's minimum complement of 14 up to He may issue orders to any other lower ranked personnel within his sphere of influence but then becomes responsible to their commanding officers for actions taken on his behalf. A Sergeant becomes elligable for promotion to Staff Sergeant after two years and receives that promotion automatically after seven years. Staff Sergeant - Sergeant First Class First Sergeant Sergeant Major - Is qualified to command a Detachment of to 117 personnel, ie a crew complement greater than a heavy carrier and up to and including that of a super carrier. He may serve as the first officer of a Company under a Command Sergeant Major. Command Sergeant Major - This represents the highest rank atainable by a Command Officer. It is a transitional grade, leading either to discharge from Earthcom or to Commissioning and a Commissioned Officer's career. A CSM is qualified to command a Company of 117 to 134 personnel, ie the crew complements of either a super carrier or two heavy carriers. Some other CC groups that fall in this range are five bcm heavy cruisers (5*25 crew = 125 personnel). A CSM may serve as the First Officer aboard a Sphinx-class Battlecruiser (250 personnel). Commissioned Officers - One may serve quite a long career in Earthcom. In the 31st century, human prosperity is several orders of magnitude higher than a millenium prior. A diverse, distributed, robust, and organic food supply more than feeds a population in the tens of trillions. Ample enlistment application rates, higher after the Gammulan wars, are now held in check by available expenditures to train, equip and care for billions of personnel in Galactic Command and Earth Command. Human life expectancy has surpassed 200 years and most Terrans, in any ocupation, retire in their 170s or so. Therefore, Earthcom structures its ranks to scale to many millions of personnel; and one's Earthcom career may last as long as 140 years, not counting Pre-Enlistment. When military personnel levels are lower, there may be fewer or no positions for the higher ranks. Still, ataining a high rank is possible through tenure, merit, and need. A Commissioned Officer has served a minimum of 20 years in the enlisted and command grades. Second Lieutenant First Lieutenant [more rank descriptions to come] At the moment, this is very much a work in progress. I will post in this thread each time I make an update.
  6. [RP] New Frontier Starstation, 1 November 3020, 1330hrs Middle docking pylon, UCV-Deathstrike Petty Officer 3rd Class Osaki led her team of 5 other engineers through to the Sunflash's bridge. She had been ordered to prioritize critical systems first. And now that payment for the parts and labor had been received, another 20 engineers were only 5 minutes behind her team. Osaki had been told that no one else was aboard, but she wanted to be sure. She and one of her team members found several human and gammulan corpses on their way to medibay. Taking advantage of the configurable-gravity environment of the huge docking bay enclosing UCV-Deathstrike, the twenty additional engineers got to work on the hull armor from the outside. ------ ShoHashi's office, 1337hrs After Commander canshow left, Rick interfaced his sub-space pocket-hub with the Admiral's internal projector. "Gentlemen, if you'll direct your attention to the space above the desk." An image of the Milky Way galaxy came into sharp focus. As of just a few weeks ago, the Terran Quadrant nations had completed charting all 1 trillion plus stars, down to the last cubic parsec (parsec ~ three light years) in the galactic core. As Terran scientists had hypothesized back in the twentieth and twenty first centuries, few star systems were likely to support life. In fact, among solid planetoids large enough to condense into a spheroid shape, only about 7 billion were massive enough to retain a significant atmosphere. Terra forming was discredited long ago as only worsening conditions for zero return on time invested. Only several thousand worlds had a thick enough atmosphere - of nitrogen, oxygen, and traces of carbon dioxide - and optimal temperature to have liquid water. Yet life originated on only 14 of these worlds. This trillion-plus-star galaxy only had 12 unique indigenous alien races. Other life-supporting worlds were not so quickly claimed, not against the competition of open space with the advanced propulsion technology used to reach them. Curiously, 26 of the starsystems containing at least one life-supporting planet - including all 14 native species worlds - were linked together by a network of stable wormholes or not-so-stable fluxfields. "Gentlemen, I have called you here to tell you, among other things, that the jumpgates *within* each of these 26 starsystems are all obsolete - no longer necessary compared to the propulsion designs I'm prepared to offer you." Tag Sho, Shin, Badman "The other reason we have met here today is to assess and solve the threat of the Credians. As you know they are very advanced in exploration and are engaged in a cold war with the Zelons over an ancient artifact. Seeking additional help, the Zelons applied for membership in Galactic Command. The Vesperons welcomed it as an opportunity to strenghen ties with the Credian Quadrant's best traders. But Galcom rejected Zelon admittance for precisely the reason they applied: they needed military help immediately." Rick paused to gague the expressions on his listeners' faces. ShoHashi sat across on his side of his own desk nodding, apparently Insurgents really did know almost everything. Shingen was beginning to look annoyed. How did all this relate to him? Badman was still stareing at the image of the Galaxy, with most of its secrets now unlocked. Rick continued, "I apologize, I'll try to move this along. The United Free Nations, which is the Terran government, took a Congressional vote - and then a general population vote - and decided to go it alone and assist the Zelons without Galcom's blessing or help. We, Earth Command, have reason to believe that Galcom is acually helping the Credians in order to avoid getting on their bad side. Part of the basis for this claim of mine may lie in the bowels of GalacomHQ itself. Vanguard Fleet has ordered me to assemble a team of diverse individuals from across the galaxy to infiltrate GHQ and find out. And I think we may need canshow's help too." Tag all [/RP] OOC: Tag means this is a specific statement or spot in my post for your character to respond.
  7. I love simming! Or haven't you noticed? Just so we're clear, this is what simming is. The word 'sim' can be a noun, meaning an individual game or simulation; or it can be a verb, meaning to simulate or play the game. A player is also known as a simmer. The official (non-cannon) 3000ad simulation plays out in the Role Playing Discussions forum. One of these days I'll add a section there on how we play differently than the mainstream simming community. This thread is about simming outside of the 3000ad game setting. Many independent sims, and sim groups (two different types of simming communities) have gotten together for mutual benefit to form the Simming League. If you're curious about how it works and what's out there, that's a great place to start.
  8. You got it. If you want anythihg changed, Badman, I can edit my post. Thanks, guys.
  9. NGO = Non-Governmental Organization [RP] Ensign Haney said to 'the man', "Mister, I have told my supervisor that you want to talk to the Admiral. But I need to know who you are first." 'The man' looked to Shingen and Badman and deduced they too wanted to know. "Garrison of EarthCom. I am also here representing an NGO I co-own, but Vanguard Fleet doesn't know that. Call me Rick or First Sergeant." At the mention of an NGO, Shingen sensed Garrison's need for secrecy, as he flatly refused to go to the Medibay. "You can't tell me where to go, Haney. My injuries aren't that bad! Treat 'em here on the fly with your fancy Insurgent field medical kits or not at all. I'm interested in what this Rick Garrison wants to say to ShoHashi." Badman said, "But why do you need our help?" Rick replied, "Badman if Vanguard Fleet loses an ally as powerful as Galcom, we'll need all the friends we can get. Lieutenant Commander Williams, if you will permit Shingen to accompany us and get his injuries treated on the go as he requests, then I will reimburse you for the parts and labor cost of repairing his Sunflash cruiser, not from Earthcom funds but from my NGO's own purse." Williams replied as Commander canshow approached from the side, "I'm sorry, First Sergeant, I have my orders. You come with us to talk to Admiral ShoHashi and the raider Shingen goes to medibay now." The three Insurgent escorts started to lead Shingen away when canshow interjected. "Belay that order, Marines. Lieutenant Williams they are ALL coming with me right now to see ShoHashi. You just don't recognize what a bargain Garrison has offered. We are contractually obligated to repair UCV-Deathstrike because Shingen came to us in distress." Commander canshow turned to Garrison, "First Sergeant, I understand you command a cruiser of your own." "Yes, ECV-Ashdod is currently deployed to Syrion space." "Well then, Commander Garrison, I accept your offer. Lieutenant Commander Williams I want you to secure the funds transfer and see to the repairs personaly - right now, go! If you have a problem with this, tell Commander Crossgrove I said so, and he can deal with me if he wants." canshow then turned to Rick, Shingen and Badman, "Gentlemen, if you'll come with me." [/RP]
  10. PM sent, Shin. BTW canshow, your story telling has improved a lot recently. Keep up the good work, both of you! Badman? What about you?
  11. canshow has approved my post. Shingen? Badman? What about you two? Do you want to see it first or can I just go for it?
  12. canshow, Shingen, Badman, My next post contains dialogue from all three of your characters. Do any of you want me to PM it to you for corrections first? To make it an actual Joint Post? Or do you not mind me using your chars?
  13. [RP] Back on the transport, Badman's statement of honour plagued 'the man's' thoughts for a moment before he gave the time traveler his response, "I purpose to protect the Terran nation from threats abroad and at home. Right now, friends in Galcom are hoarding information that could jeopardize all Terrans. I purpose to get that information to my superiors before the week is out by infiltrating Galcom." [/RP] I will post at length once Shin and Sho have caught up. Please read this.
  14. Guys, please keep OOC discussion in this thread, not in the story topics. Thanks. Shin, glad you're still with us. Post when you have time. We look forward to your response. Canshow, I apologize for not yet involving you enough. I will try to do better. Anyone is free to introduce any addition to the current plot, within reason. If it's believable and doesn't break anything, I'll do my best to pick up on it. But this is not just my story. It's everyone's. If you have any questions or anything at all please post it in this thread. Following moved from my Sep 27th post: Badman, I'm going to allow your use of time travel THIS time only, because I care more about attracting new players, like you, than about keeping some (currently unstated) story telling rules. You "love making people think ... and create ..." well then you'll like how I take your contribution above and run with it here in this post. Not only do I enjoy that type of challenge, but your participation is worth it too. smile.gif So post a reply when you can and don't let us down. Welcome, Badman, to Apogee!
  15. Hey there, fellow Portlander. No worries on RL time, you've seen what I ask above, that's it. Your assignment is to start October's roll call thread. Then you're off the hook for the rest of the month. Welcome back, Tek
  16. Hey there Kyle! Nice numbers Insurgents. Keep 'em coming.
  17. Indeed, congrats RT! And my complements to Sho for reusing an already existing thread.
  18. Hey _silk. Good to see ya, man!
  19. Great job, Kal and denny. Keep 'em comming!
  20. [RP] Five hours earlier, aboard the transport heading for New Frontier.... 'The man' met another passenger, a human. "My name is Craigudus Badmanidus, but my friends call me Badman. Once General of the Athieo-Christo rebellion. Two weeks ago I metaphorically and spiritually died after fulfilling my bargain with the Universe. Instead of the promised and foretold Nirvana, and denied of my true fate, was ripped asunder by the 'Dark eye of the Lion Spirit', to awake on a cold, hard surface; very VERY far from home......", "And wipe that sarcastic smile off your face, I am not delusional, for you do know me, and WILL fear what I harbour." "Pleased to meet you." said 'the man' without offering his name in return. He prefered to give people not involved with his mission the benefit of the doubt in the absence of conflicting evidence. But what if this human really was from the distant Terran past? What if he really had led a group of second century Christians in a crusade against the oppressive Roman state? The man knew Badman could make an invaluable impromptu addition to his own mission. "I can't give my name, not even a pseudonym, because of my mission. I work for the terran military and assume you've had time in these two weeks to learn the current state of humanity, where it stands among the other galactic players and who they are too. Because this transport only departed Starstation Ragnarok last night, I also assume that you appeared from the past at that station - the crowning jewel of Earth Command headquarters directly orbiting Sol closer than Mercury." "I and some high ranking Insurgents are going to infiltrate Galcom. I want your help on this mission, because, among other things we could use a fresh perspective." They talked at length until the transport arrived at New Frontier. Present time... Shingen, the Insurgents escorting him, Badman and 'the man' were all now walking through New Frontier's promenade toward the station's Operations section. When they reached the point where guests were not allowed any further, they stopped. 'The man' told the Insurgent security officers, "I need to speak with your Commanding Officer, now!" [/RP]
  21. [RP] 'The man" had been standing in line among his transport's fellow passengers for the better part of an hour. Apparently Insurgents had red tape too! He at last reached the customs counter and checked in his weapon, standard policy to disarm first time guests. "I want this back, tomorrow." Not waiting for a response or a form to sign he set his bag on the conveyor belt to the left and stepped through the detector. "He's clear, sir." Said Lieutenant Williams. The man did not even nod as he took his bag and walked off the launch bay and headed for New Frontier's promenade. Off to his left a few hundred feet, several marines, two medics and an injured man emerged from an adjacent launch bay. 'The man' recognized the injured one as one of his persons of interest. He approached the group. "Are you Shingen?" He new the injured man would probably recognize him from intelligence footage. But the point was not to maintain cover, just a low profile. "You and I need to talk to the Insurgent High Command immediately." He turned to the senior officer of this group of Insurgents, and read Ensign Haney on his uniform. "Take us to your leader, Haney." [/RP]
