Thank you, BC_Vet, for asking the questions you did that ended up bringing all these good people out of the woodwork (Hi Remo!). It's exciting to see these discussions again. I'm not heavily involved right now because I over-comitted in the past and just need a nice long break. But I will try to answer your questions here because I want you to be involved and enjoy your experience with other BC players. You may know some of what I will say, but here's my understanding of the history and the current situation. An Alliance is the top-most type of player Group in the BC/UC community. Each Alliance, i.e. each combination of race and caste, has been defined in the game itself since the beginning of the series in 1996. In Battlecruiser 3000AD v1, one could only play as a member of Galcom. If that player registered here on the forums, he was considered to be part of the Galactic Command Alliance. In 1997, Michael Jones (aka Gareth DeSylva) introduced a neat idea of acting out game experiences on the written page; thus RolePlay was born. Soon after, Richard Phariss (aka Rattler) and Alexander Moritz (aka TC McQueen) decided to roleplay as an Insurgent and as a member of Earthcom, respectively. Also around that time, Antti Junkkari formed a splinter group of Commanders from the main Galcom force to be a fast and maneuverable, heavy-hitting strike force - he called it Orion Fleet. Derek saw how his player community flourished, first through RP and then following the splitting moves of Rattler, McQueen and Junkkari. So he authorized commanders to join the Insurgents and Earthcom and approved the use of a Fleet as an organization under a parent Alliance. Orion Fleet was formed, and the rest of Galcom commanders were organized into either the SDF or Prime Fleet. Derek later credited DeSylva for his pioneering RP work when he welcomed him onto his Beta team on September 11, 1998. quote:Originally posted to GNN by Supreme Cmdr on 09.11.1998 under BC3K Development: Michael Jones, aka, Cmdr DeSylva, is now an official BC3K tester. Like others before him, Hector, Jon (and over 30 others), Mike is a staunch support of BC3K and has been since 1997. Quite recently, if you've been following events on COMMLINK, you will see that Mike is spearheading a BC3K based RPG that has been the focus of many threads and discussions. Mike and other long term commanders, have also been instrumental in promoting the fleet structures and most recently, thanks to an Insurgent uprising spearheaded by none other than former GALCOM commander, Cmdr Rattler, continue to promote the BC3K world and characters through unique ideas and thoughts that augment my vision of many years ago. These are the heroes of BC3K.(geez Derek, what did Mark do with the GNN archives? I had to dig for this one.) Soon, Derek approved the formation of ISS Fleet by DeSylva, Wraith Fleet by Tac and Spectre Fleet by Rattler. TC McQueen and company evidently never got around to creating a Fleet per se in Earthcom. In 2005, Derek disbanded whatever Earthcom Fleet there was and created Vanguard Fleet. The Insurgents split into four Fleets for a few years but have since merged back into Spectre Fleet. Continuing his tradition of awarding the Fleets community with reasonable freedoms, Derek authorized two Gammulan Military Fleets in 2002, Defense Fleet and Diplomacy Fleet (that's what you now see in Jaguar's signature). Later on, as you know, Remo Williams disbanded these two Fleets and created Hernaor Fleet; he has done this with Derek's blessing. He attempted to replace Jaguar as Fleet Leader because of inactivity on fleet matters but no suitable candidate stepped forward. When you asked who the current Fleet Leader, ShoHashi also thought Jaguar lacked the time and/or interest to lead Hernaor Fleet. When Jag indicated otherwise, Sho corrected himself. Now through all this, Derek Smart had been not only the Alliance Leader of Galcom, but also care-taker of all the Fleets. It was a lot of work for him to keep us organized and at least partially sane. But sometime in 2004, he decided to delegate the role of Fleets care-taker to Remo Williams. This position passed to ShoHashi in 2006. Basically, the care-taker guides and regulates the real player side of Fleets and all player Groups. His character exercises no such authority in RolePlay or MultiPlay (can you imagine an Insurgent in charge of the Gammulan Empire?!?). But the author, the real person behind that avatar does. Please get this distinction clear! Because the issue of the Fleets care-taker's RP character ordering other Alliances around came up in 2004 with Remo, and it was not pretty! The real person who Derek appoints, ShoHashi at the moment, exercises some of Derek's authority to govern the player Group community as he, Sho, sees fit - that way Derek doesn't have to commit the time to run the Fleets himself. Today, the situation is kind of how it was in May 2004 (when MP really got going in earnest), and that's this: Fleets need players. To attract and keep them, Fleets should undertake periodic MP, RP or both, as their members see fit. It's really that simple. If you can't afford the time to play online as much as you would like, that's fine. Really it is! We want you to take part in the action - no matter how sporadic your participation, or our scheduled events may be - because you being there makes it more fun for the rest of us. quote:Originally posted by BC_Vet: Yet to play in Fleet Action one needs the updated, upgraded version of Universal Combat that the servers will support. No matter what version of UC you have, Ben, Sho and those in on Fleet Action can work something out with you. We've had that particular discussion here on the forums many times before. Today, out of the possible 200+ Alliances, there are four Fleet Alliances consisting of seven Fleets. [*]Terran/Military (Galactic Command) Alliance Prime Fleet Orion Fleet ISS Fleet Wraith Fleet [*]Terran/Insurgent Alliance (The Insurgents) Spectre Fleet [*]Terran/Earthcom (Earth Command) Alliance Vanguard Fleet [*]Gammulan/Military Alliance Hernaor Fleet This is the history and current situation as I understand it. If I got anything wrong, someone please correct me. Thank you for reading my rather lengthly reply, BC_Vet. I hope I have answered some of your questions. If not, or if you have more, please ask! Though I personally won't be around that much, we are more than happy to help. BTW, nice new site layout, boss. Mark did a great job for you.

All the best to ya, Derek. Thanks for the years of great gameplay.

Fleet Action Poll - Not Just for Fleet Members
Quazar replied to ShoHashi's topic in General Multiplayer Fleet Discussions
I answered only the first two questions, choosing 'Something else' for the third. Should I return to the Fleets community in the future, my only consistent activity would be to RolePlay. That's my passion, and it's what's kept me comming back here for nearly nine years. Therefore, I would have little time for MultiPlay of any type. This is a matter of priority, not lack of interest. For details, please PM me. Sho, thank you for polling the 3000AD community. -
Merry Christmas to all my friends in the Battlecruiser community. I wish you all the best as we celebrate the birth of our Lord. I will spend the day with my extended family. What are your plans?

Wow, a lot of people responded to this thread. I guess you are poplar after all, boss. aramike, you are right on in your comments. quote:Originally posted by Wolferz: Dare I say it? The countdown has begun. It's at 19993 with this one. Seven posts to go.

The counter on his latest post (at the time of this writing) has Derek's tally pegged at "19951" I haven't kept track, but I think I can recall back in the day his count at about eleven thousand four hundred something. Anyway if anyone happens to catch the big one, could you link it to this thread?

Hi aramike, I also commanded a Fleet, as my sig shows. The Insurgents would gladly welcome the ICV-Intrepid back into their fold. Read post #49 above, by Sho, and go from there. Who knows? You might just get your old FL job back. But I think the Insurgents will gladly take back their own Vice Admiral Michael Kristophers with a warm welcome. Enjoy your stay! Jag, you do realize that you made a fifth Derek birthday thread on Monday, right? Not counting off-topic posts in other threads, I chronologically list Derek's birthday celebrations in this forum alone, with each initiating author and year: (none that I found prior to 2000) Happy Birthday, Derek! by Gudihl (2000) Guess whos birthday it is today? by LordDavid (2001) Someboody We Know Has A Birthday! by Rattler (2002) Countdown vigil to Derek's 40th.... by Andergum (2003) (none that I found for 2004) Post #49 in the Happy Birthday, Derek! thread by Quazar (2005) Happy Birthday SC!!! by Jaguar (2006) *goes back to lurking* Oh, BTW, I almost forgot. Derek!

Looking good, gentlemen. If it's not too much trouble, could an administrator please change my user title to "Ensign" to reflect my new BB status? Thanks.
-
With this post, I have now updated my signature at every 3000AD-related bulletin board except ICC. I have PMed the UBB source to ShoHashi so that he can update my signature there.

I have increased the DB security levels of Matchoo and Wolfheart to level 2. Please note that the parenthetical designations next to our names (i.e. "Fleet Leader" for three of our members, and "Alliance Leader" for me) only refer to FleetDB security levels. To clarify, I am the Vanguard Fleet Leader, Teknocack is the Second-In-Command, or Fleet XO, and Wolfheart and Matchoo are the other two assistant leaders. The three of you, together, comprise my assistant leadership staff.
-
It's good to see you report in, Darkling. I was under the false impression that you were no longer interest in Fleet membership. You will need to re-register to the DB, await approval from my assistant leaders, set up your signature, register to ECA, and then respond to the other two components of this month's roll call. Teknocack, Wolfheart, and Matchoo can all help you with most of this process. Again, it's good to see you here. I see some other messages here at BCO (like Matchoo's sig instructions, good job) and over at ECA (Ben's post about the site) but just don't have time to respond to them yet. This is why I have a team of assistant leaders. How's the MP practice schedule looking, Tek, Wolf?
-
Try this one, originally posted for Orion Fleet. After the meeting, my assistant leaders will work with you further to get Vanguard Fleet members' signatures in line with this standard that I remember all too well from my days in Prime. We have not yet implemented the launch locations (which will be either for MP, or RP, not both) and RP Wing mottos because our full structure, upon which they depend, has not yet been approved. More details will be discussed at the FL meeting. Thank you, Remo, for bringing uniform signatures back to my attention.
-
Your signature needs some work, firestar. Tek, please work with him on it and take his timezone into account when planning MP practice sessions. We may need a third MP team to cover that region of the world. firestar, you need to make sure that you have answered all three components of our monthly roll call.
-
I have approved you to post at ECA, netshaman. Try it again and then set up your signature there and here at BCO. I will be announcing another change in leadership in the comming days.
-
I am reporting into BCO's Earthcom Forum for October 2005. Good work on the roll calls, Wolfheart. Please change your signature to read "Team Leader" instead of "Wing Leader". Matchoo your sig here at BCO looks perfect. Please include it in full over at ECA. Then, since you're now an expert , work with Caseck on his signature. BTW, Caseck, thank you for reporting in here and in the DB. Please also configure your signature at ECA and post in our roll call topic there as well. Remember every monthly Vanguard Fleet roll call has three components, as explained in our Alliance bulletin. PM Matchoo if you need help.

I plan to attend the October 9th, 1900 GMT Fleet Leaders Meeting. Is this in addition to our regular 1900 GMT meeting held every third Sunday of the month? I am available to attend both. quote:Originally posted by Ben Zwycky: I'm nearly done with our full RP structure.Yeah-heah! WTG, Ben! Though I'm quite busy during the week these days, our gathering this weekend should be fun.

Members of Vanguard Fleet, As your Fleet Leader, I am now waist deep in college homework assignments. Therefore, a few promotions are in order here. [*]I herby declare Teknocack Prime to be my Fleet Exuctive Officer, or Fleet XO. Captain Teknocack Prime is now the second-in-command of Vanguard Fleet. Now, we all have real lives to live. So, to assist Tek in his duties, [*]Matchoo is promoted to Commander and now leads the Role-Play Authors "virtual" MP Team. When updating your signature, Matchoo, put as your position "Team Leader, RP Authors". [*]Wolfheart is promoted to Commander and is now the Wolf Pack MP Team Leader. Please update your signatures, here at BCO and over at ECA, to reflect your new positions. Congratulations! Team Wolf Pack is now our European MP Team. We now need a name for a new North American MP Team. I need all Vanguard Fleet members to schedule MP practice sessions with eachother in closely alligned timezones. You will need to reassign members in the DB to the new MP team, as I have left most members assigned to Team Wolf Pack for the time being. Matchoo and I do not have MP capability at this time. So, contact Prime Fleet's Marvin about RP opportunities. Gentlemen, we now have 12 registered members in the Fleet DataBase. The goal here is to keep them and get more by holding monthly roll calls and organizing MP practice sessions and matches. This week, one of you three assistant leaders needs to issue all three components of the October 2005 roll call, as described in our Alliance bulletin in the Fleet DataBase. One of our 12 members is T. C. McQueen. He is our EarthCom-Commandant, Earthcom's founder and our equivalent to Galcom's Supreme Commander. He is excused from answering all roll calls because he serves active duty in the German military. Notice: Each and everyone of you are responsible to schedule and play Multi-Player practice sessions and, eventually, official matches with other Fleets. I cannot currently do this for you. You now have three assistant leaders to guide you. I will oversee the Fleet as I have time and approve new registrations at ECA; but while I'm in school, you three gentlemen are responsible for Vangaurd Fleet. We now need experienced members of other Fleets to come along side and mentor Vanguard's three new assistants leaders. Godspeed, Vanguard Fleet!

Case in point.
