Fleet security clearance levels and rankings
Zane_Marlowe replied to Ben Zwycky's topic in ISS Fleet
There are freeware encryption programs that people can download from anywhere, and since they're freeware I don't think they have export restrictions (my untutored opinion). Still, I have a couple interesting encryption tricks up my sleeve that you may find interesting if we get to the place where we need them. -

Their ROE discouraged using FC assets for reasons I'm not entirely clear about, but had the impression it had to do with technical concerns. I've actually used FC assets in MP against a single opponent, but I haven't tried testing a 3 on 3 match with everybody deploying all their FC assets (24 AI FC's battling it out, that would be cool!), and I thought some of the guys who had spent time working through Prime's ROE could shed some light on why they set their ROE up that way (if indeed it was technical rather than just for reasons related to scenario balance). That said, I am also curious (if the answer doesn't require a dissertation) whether the load for AI-controlled player assets (such as the aforementioned FC's) is managed on the server or the client-side. AI's fighters don't have to deal with prediction warping do they?

You know, for what it's worth, my attitude has been that since I know SC's working on the newer UC products, and since they share a similar codebase to the existing offering, then as those products are polished, we'll continue to see the improvements in shared code for the current UC offering. That said, I'm glad there's a sticky topic for this so we can talk about how to design MP scenarios (fleet scenarios or even just some fun stuff for random enthusiasts to play). One question I have is that since the computer seems to manage the PTA system adequately, then is there some reason why we wouldn't use FC assets as a primary means of attack since they are also AI controlled? FC assets + PTA systems end up doing a lot of work for me in SP play, and this could give us something to build scenarios around until the other coding issues are resolved (or the next game comes out, etc.) Thanks for the post BTW Derek, I'm glad to know you're keeping tabs on this even though your backend support for doing so isn't there. Hope the new products give you more flexibility and payoff.

Fleet security clearance levels and rankings
Zane_Marlowe replied to Ben Zwycky's topic in ISS Fleet
Hey, I have worked out some good strategies for encryption and secure document transfer. Let me know if you're interested. Also, nice classification structure, you might think to add codeword security since that can give people access who otherwise wouldn't have it while denying access to people who would. For example, let's say someone cleared level 3 needed access to a particular document that you didn't want accessible to some level 4 personnel. You would make the document level 5, but with codeword access for those who weren't level 5 but who had the codeword. -
Somebody remembers Darklands! That's zarking fantastic! That's one of my all time favs because it imagined fantasy within the scope of history. I'd pay good money to see that one redone. My wife was a big morrowind fan, I haven't shown here the Oblivion previews yet.

Good enough, thanks either way!
-
Wow, thanks Remo! Does the new webhost support php and MySQL as your previous hosting solution did (I'd suppose it does, knowing you, but it's good to ask).
-
Gotcha, I logged after about 20 minutes with nobody around. Overlap must be a difference between our watches, but in any event we'll call it at a half hour next time. What server should I login to?
-
Excellent! You busy on weeknights? It'll be easier since we're both in US timezones to coordinate. Drop me some availability and we can go from there.
-
Well, I logged in yesterday about 11am (gmt-6) and didn't see anyone, so we'll have to try again some other time. Did we miss each other Ben?
-
Meeting at 5 or 5:30 GMT is not bad if I have notice. Are we meeting this saturday then?
-
Well, let's at least try to do something on Saturday, say 4pm GMT which will be about 10am my time, which would be optimal, but if you need later that's possible, just let me know. Shingen, would love to shoot atcha, or conduct further operations related to our former RP, have you updated that yet? I haven't looked lately but I remember you getting ready to do an update.
-
Hey new commanders, how's your progress? Lille, you should update your sig, there's a thread in the forum community topic for this, so you might want to learn how to get your sig working there. Also, Omega, how are you getting acclimated to ISS here? I haven't seen you posting in the ISS threads, so I wanted to check up on you and make sure you weren't lost in the shuffle.
-
I'm at GMT -6, so yeah, 7am would start us at 1am and that wouldn't work out so well for me. The other way could work though, our noon(ish) your evening, or our morning, your afternoon. Saturday morning is normally good, what would you say to that?

MP Fleet Action Tournament
Zane_Marlowe replied to Zane_Marlowe's topic in General Multiplayer Fleet Discussions
Interested European players check this post at the Fleet Action main site. Interested North American players, PM me at this site with a consistently available time and we'll move forward. I've let this lie still for a while because I was busy getting married and getting started in a full time job at the college I'm teaching at, but things are stabilizing in my schedule now so I'm expecting to be able to give Fleet Action a little more attention. To date we've tested the Planetfall rules, and they seem to work well, but we may revise them since the planetside MP is coming together nicely. If there are any of the beta testers who would be willing to forward me relevant information on the game's planetside MP performance so I can adjust my scenarios accordingly, I'd be grateful. Thanks again. -
"It won't suck." I love it. SC, this is what's going to make marine and pilot careers worth the price of admission. I think I can hear Kalshion drooling.
-
Well, I was out of town this weekend, and I didn't see the posting on Friday, so sorry I couldn't coordinate better. Should be available for the next few Sundays, can we arrange an ISS scrimmage to get to know people and work on tactics?
-
Weekends are generally good as long as I have notice. Also, do those of you in our fleet who have web site hosting have access to the computers necessary to run a server for us if we needed it?
-
Just for clarity, you saw that we had this discussion in the fleet db thread a little while ago? We listed a number of commanders who were MIA then and advised them to make themselves known if they were still here. You might check the datestamp on that discussion and see if you're satisfied with the consistency of their current status.

Flight Sims - The Future of Our Genre
Zane_Marlowe replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in PC Gaming & Technology
Well, I'd agree that you and I are playing a game that is very well designed and very efficiently laid out. I command a lot of information with very little screen real estate (especially via TACOPS), but I'd argue that you and I already "ramped up" in the sense I'm describing. The point (made by the writer of the above article) wasn't that it was impossible to learn sims (obviously since people have), but that people who haven't had simpler sims to expose them to concepts and rewards of simulation games get turned off more easily because today's sims have built their complexity (and their market) on the backs of earlier simpler sims. He was essentially saying that if you didn't have that complexity ramp of simpler to more complex sims, then the "angle of frustration" (if I can coin a term) is such that it shouldn't surprise us that without the "ramp" simulations have become a niche market since more people will just give up and go elsewhere for their gaming fix. -
I think my comment was in relation to your point about cleaning out the fleet db at some point later. If Medievh is going inactive until he gets himself back online after moving, I would hope he wouldn't be removed since he had given us notice of his absence.
-
Thanks for the heads-up Denny! Alright, fast decision time, do we need the site for the next two weeks?
-
Hey I was wondering if there were enough players in the general area around northern Illinois (where I live) to put together a LAN party where we'd play UC? I remember seeing someone was from Springfield, and I have a friend or two here I could probably count on to play. What do you think, is this doable?
-
CIOPS will be glad to have medievh when he gets setup again, he's apparently been moving or something and doesn't have access at the moment.
-
I tried to get on, but the password wasn't what I thought it was and there wasn't anywhere I could go to look. I actually logged into the match server, but people were playing so they didn't have their chat windows open, so I just passed for the day, sorry. This brings up a good point, where are we supposed to find this info (password, etc.)? Are the Fleet Leaders going to distribute it or... ?
