GAMMA correction problem?

Hmm, I just got the 2.09 version installed and been playing it for a few, everything works, no crashes or nothing. But, its so dark everywhere I go!

I have a 3DFX V3 3000 AGP in a ASUS p5a/b mb with a AMD k6/2 - 450, 64 MB RAM. Latest drivers/directx7.0/ALI chipset fix (yes, ASUS made a bobo with the p5a/b mb), freshly downloaded since I recently reinstalled winsuck98. I am also using the 3dfx voodoo3 drivers from the download page.

I am using the bc3k3dfx.bat to start the game, no changes made to the bat file (yes, the /g setting is there), and when the game launches it reports using the 3dfx voodoo3 as display.

Settings in Autoexec.bat regarding the V3 are:

SET FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=1

SET SST_SCREENREFRESH=60

SET SST_RGAMMA=2.00

SET SST_GGAMMA=2.00

SET SST_BGAMMA=2.00

(Changes to theese settings do not change appearance for bc3k.)

The alt+,/. keys do cause a message to appear on the screen in game that the gamma is increased/decreased, but the colour/brightness does not change on the screen.

In my other Glide games the gamma settings work and i can cram it up so the screen virtually turns white.. =) I have no idea what I am missing here.. something obvious?

I read the FAQ (thats where I found the alt+,/. keys) and searched for other GAMMA and 3dfx related messages, but nothing mentioned there seemed related. One thing though, I can't really see a difference between software mode (bc3k.bat) and glide mode (bc3k3dfx.bat), which makes me wonder if the game really is running in glide mode.. anyway to check that?

Personal Note: Ok, I can see a def difference between the two modes, just kinda hard to notice.. dang.. this game looks almost as good without glide... But still, glide seems to be faster and has some nicer effects etc.. well.. can't figure out still what i am missing regarding the gamma.. +)

Oh, yessir, the highest gamma setting for bc3k is 2.00. I read that. =)

But, for some reason, it doesn't seem to matter at all what I set settings in autoexec.bat to at all. Makes no difference on the screen in any glide game.. I can rem those settings out and nothing changes..=/

The setting when i start bc3k3dfx and hit the alt+,/. seems to be 1.30, atleast that is the value the gamma jumps *from*.

The only settings I've seen make changes are internal gamma corrections such as in AvP or Tribes. The desktop 3dfx panel settings I can change, but those settings seem to be over ridden for some reason when I start a game in both AvP, Tribes.

Hmm, mebbe this isn't 'fixable' or nuttin, I know its my stupid system again, always seem to have *some* problem with mostly everything I wanna play (and, ehm, anyone know why ctrl-alt-del would freeze a computer instead of rebooting it? ctrl-alt-del has never worked on this puppy!!)...

But I still *should* see a difference between 1.30 gamma and 2.00 gamma no? Or am I just fooling myself there.. =)

Comparison, mebbe not really comparable, but what the heck: AvP, if i change the gamma there, from 1.30, the screen goes from very dark (well, thats actually a nice setting for AVP, lubs those aliens rushing in the dark) to bright at 2.00 (makes the whole game look corny)...

Mmm, ok, I am got a workaround by using the 2.09 WIN(suck)95/98/NT version since I can cram the Gamma on the desktop to 2.00, which for some reason remains set in-game using the win-version. But as you know, this mode just doesn't look as nifty as 3dfx.. =)

Ok, I'll shaddup now, if you can think of something to look at in order to remedy this, or a better workaround, I'd be happy, if not, mebbe its time to put this damn computer out of its misery, once and for all.. *readies her shotgun*

Have a nice day!

PS. I know that ASUS is selling the p5a/b MB really cheap nowadays, to anyone else who is planning on buying one, DONT! You'll have a nightmare getting *any* card to work on the AGP port, even with the latest fix.
