Guest Posted January 23, 2001 Report Posted January 23, 2001 ok i went and read theFAQ's that came with my game and also the FAQ's tab at the top of this page but the FAQ that came with my game didin't say anything about a general protection exception fault location 0177:0053, am i looking in the wrong place? i'm not familiar to alot of things on the site because my game usually worked. but i couldn't find the answer to my question in FAQs. i read the bck3000AD troubleshooting FAQs is this right? i read it all with the exception of the part about the video card because i don't have a 3d card. as of right now i'm unistalling again and re-installing[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-23-2001).]
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 ok i read the FAQ's and i've uninstalled and re-installed. now i don't even get the error message anymore. the main thing that i notice, is the fact that when the game was running well, i used to always go to a DOS screen first, some numbers and letters would scroll by really fast and then the game would start. now, none of that happens. i never go to a DOS screen, instead it goes directly to the 3000AD sign and then it cuts me back to the desktop. i removed the tick mark also and that's where i get the message general protection exception 0177:0053 what am i missing? i read the FAQs and it says nothing about that error, or why i'm not going into DOS. please help me, i've been playing for two years with no probs, now this. also, when i first bought this game, i couldn't take it right out the box and play it, it wouldn't work at all without the patches, but now when i unistall and re-install, i can paly it with no problem without the patches, this is crazy to me, becuase it has never done this before, especially when i first bought it.[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-23-2001).]
Gordon Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 I would suggest that you uninstall the game again and delete the folder that was previously created. When you reinstall try running the game before you patch up to 2.08 and see if you are able to get it to run if so patch and test again until the problem is evident. You may have a problem with one of the D/L's and this is the only way to find out. Report back after trying this.
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 thanks for your reply dude. i took your advice once again and uninstalled and re-installed. i ran it and it without the patches and the game played. but from past experiences, it's not suppose to play, becuase when i first bought it, it wouldn't play at all without patches. this time instead of going and getting the patches i downloaded the map pak, but i didn't unzip it, and i then downloaded the 2.00-2.08 but i didn't unzip it either, this time, it went to the DOS screen and all the files started to scroll down like it used to, but alot of the play options in the game are not there becuase i don't have the patches, and i know if i unzip them, the game will not play and crash like it has been doing. what should i do? patch it again? also, this time there was no sound. and yes i did do the sound setup[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-23-2001).]
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 Make sure that you move the patches into the BC3k folder, and run them from there, do not run them from your download folder or whatever, move them into the BC3K folder!!Also, patch one at a time and run the game each time as stated above, it will give you a clue which download went awry on you. ------------------ CMDR Jaguar GCV Excelsior This is not just a game, It's a life unto itself!!
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 ok i just did that, thanks jaguar, and it has to be the 2.00-2.08 file, because as soon as i installed it and tried to run the game it crashed, yes i did install them to the bc3k folder, at least now i'm getting the DOS screen, also the text in the DOS screen turns blue[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-23-2001).]
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 ok here is what i did now, since i'm getting the rolling text in the DOS screen now, i removed the tick on close on exit so i could see if what message was there, nothing happened, it just closed out as usual.
Gordon Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 After your crash did you change anything on you system ? This happened on my system and it wound up being the new mouse that I had installed, as soon as I reinstalled my original mouse and drivers the problem was gone. I see that you stated that you do not have a 3D card, I would suggest that you get one as it helped me and my game crashes quite a bit, besides when BCM goes gold you'll need it.
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 no i don't have a 3d card, and i have never needed one for this game, i've been playing it for a couple years and its never been a prob. and no doubt that i will be first in line to get a 3D card when BCM comes out. but right now i want to get back to playing this, no i haven't changed anything on my system, everything is the same, except the fact that my game is useless now. i need help.
Gordon Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 Shot in the dark but did you have to use the /v? (? = #)parameter in the bat file for the game when it was running for you? I would try that, read the VCF for /v parameter options.
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 hehe well, since i have no idea what a /v is i'll have to say no i didn't use it. thanks anyway for your help. i hope someone reads this and have some kind of idea of what is wrong with my game
Gallion Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 Deener,It seems that I recall you had the same difficulty when you first arrived at the forum- do you still have those notes?BC3K runs fine after you initially install, the impression I am getting is that things start to screw up once you begin to apply the patches. You may have a bad patch. Suggest the following: Uninstall BC3K and delete install directory. Search for the bc3k.ini file in the .windows directory and delete it to. Download v2.0-v2.08 patch Download v2.08-v2.09 patch Download the mappak.exe file Reinstall BC3K Copy v2.0-v2.08 patch to the BC3K installation directory. Apply the v2.0-v2.08 patch Copy the mappak.exe file to the installation directory Apply the mappake.exe file. Copy v2.08-v2.09 patch to the BC3K installation directory. Apply the v2.08-v2.09 patch. Run the sound setup.exe via dos window or double click on it using explorer. Run BC3K Post results in this thread. Copy any and all error messages verbatum and include them in your post.TTFN------------------ Commander Gallion GCV Graf Spee, Starbase Cerberus Wing Leader - Wraith Fleet/Corsair Wing "Run Silent, Run Deep" Corsair Cove Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series Leader, Team 1[This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 01-24-2001).]
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 Thanks for taking the time to reply Gallion, yes i had a problem a few years ago when i first got the game but this is totally different. back then i couldn't get the game to run when i bought it, but the patches got me up and flying, this time it's seems to be the opposite. the game plays fine win i install it,(which i think is totally crazy, because it's never been able to do that before without the patches) but as soon as i apply the first patch,v2.00-v2.08 it messes up. i did exactly what you told me to, to the letter, and it did the exact same thing. this time i didn't get the DOS screen again, and no rolling text. it crashed with the same error, (The program encountered a general protection exception, fault location: 0177:0053 interrupts in service: none.)[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-24-2001).][This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-24-2001).]
Guest Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 ok something new has happened, every other time i try to run the game, it starts and runs, with two problems; 1)the screen is enlarged, making it very difficult to view my CVD,TACSCAN,and NID. and 2)the second time that i was able to get in the game, it went crazy blinking back and forth between bridge views, and forward view really fast. and as i said before, i'm only able to get in the game on every other try, the other times, i still get the same fault message that i posted above. i feel that i'm getting closer, please keep helping me. thanks.
aramike Posted January 24, 2001 Report Posted January 24, 2001 In the case of the screen being enlarged, just adjust your monitor settings. They should revert when you exit the game.
Guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Posted January 25, 2001 thanks dude, i tried and it didn't work, i adjusted it with every adjustment that my PC would allow and although my screen resized, nothing happened in the game. i still have the same problem. but at least i'm getting in the game every now and then, but that still is useless because the game flits and blinks like crazy rendering my game completely useless. someone help me please. this is so frustrating. and thanks to all that have tried to help me.[This message has been edited by Commander Deener (edited 01-25-2001).]
Gallion Posted January 25, 2001 Report Posted January 25, 2001 Video sems to be the problem, need info. What are you system specs?IOW...o What type of video card do you have? o Who manufactured your systems; e.g. Compaq, etc. o Model number of system. o What OS (Win95, Win98, Win98SE, etc.) are you using? o etc.TTFN------------------ Commander Gallion GCV Graf Spee, Starbase Cerberus Wing Leader - Wraith Fleet/Corsair Wing "Run Silent, Run Deep" Corsair Cove Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series Leader, Team 1
Guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Posted January 25, 2001 oh, thanks Gallion, my PC is a DELL, OptiPlex GX100, OS is windows 98, the only problem i have is finding out what kind of video card i have. can you direct me to how i can find this info? thanks for your help!
Gallion Posted January 25, 2001 Report Posted January 25, 2001 I found your system specs Deener. to make a long story real short - you are up the preverbial creek without a paddle with this system.Basically - you have 4mb of integrated video memory. The video chip and stuff is intregrated onto the motherboard. short of procuring a PCI video card your are hosed. BC3K requires 8mb of video RAM to function.two ways to fix this:1 - Buy a new and better computer that does not have the video integrated on the motherboard (never cared for these types of computer systems personally).2 - buy and install a PCI video card. A Geforce MX card can be found for around $125-&150 USD. You can probably find a v5-4500 PCI v-card for the same price or even cheaper. Now to the real dark side of this moon - BCM will not run on your current system. Look at the products page for details. What you have is a real basic computer that is good for basic computer stuff (word proccessing, e-mail, etc.) and very light gaming (solitaire, hearts, minesweeper, etc).Bottom line: IMO there is nothing that we can do for you on this forum until you either get a better computer system or install a video card with at least 8mb of RAM.This is my opinion only. Good luck TTFN------------------ Commander Gallion GCV Graf Spee, Starbase Cerberus Wing Leader - Wraith Fleet/Corsair Wing "Run Silent, Run Deep" Corsair Cove Official Tester, Battlecruiser Series Leader, Team 1[This message has been edited by Gallion (edited 01-25-2001).]
Guest Posted January 26, 2001 Report Posted January 26, 2001 Thanks Gallion, i really appreciate your help. now that i know the prob, i can take care of it. i've had my eye on a nice Hew/Pack, at walmart. what is your opinion on those?
Guest Posted January 26, 2001 Report Posted January 26, 2001 If you want my opinion, and you probably don't, build a system, I find that by building my own systems, I know what's in it, I can upgrade it a piece at a time if I want to later, and It is Generic, therefore I can do just about anything with it that I want. Also, in SOME cases it is cheaper then buying a prebuilt system.A prebuilt system, RE:Compaq, HP, E-machine, etc. are very proprietary in my experience, the cases are funky, so not much more will fit, the motherboards have everything built in, Audio, video, etc.My Bro in Law had an IBM and tried to upgrade, finally got so frustrated, he called me, the new Harddrive wouldn't work with the Bios, and the only ones that would were from, you guessed it, IBM and cost 4 times as much. Convinced him to build his own system and he has been a happy camper ever since. So build your own system or find someone, small computer retailer, to build a generic system for you. I do not advise going to Walmart and buying one of thier off the shelf systems, because by the time you get it set up, you are going to want to upgrade and won't be able to. I also hear that if you get on Ebay you can find the parts for a system rather easily and very inexpensively, or ask around here, some of us may actually have spare parts lying about that you could build quite a system out of. You never know, I just traded a K6II 350 and motherboard for a new network card and sound card, so you never know what you might find.Sorry about being so longwinded. Good luck!! ------------------ CMDR Jaguar GCV Excelsior This is not just a game, It's a life unto itself!!

BCM needs an 8BM video card. BC3K only needs a 2-4MB video card.As far as I can tell, he has not read the FAQ fully. Had he done that, he would have known to either (a) install SDD and force BC3K to use SVGA mode by editing the BC3K.BAT file or ( do not install SDD and force BC3K to use SVGA by editing the BC3K.BAT file accordingly, rather than relying on BC3K to auto-detect an archaic VGA card.
Guest rtoolooze Posted January 27, 2001 Report Posted January 27, 2001 Definitly build your own system, or have one built for you. Do your homework and read up on what to put in your system. You'd be suprised just how easy it is to build one. Getting the right parts can make a huge difference in your gaming experience down the road. I made the mistake of buying a Pakard Bell years ago as my first computer. Started building my own after that. Plus its easier to build one today. DON'T buy one from Wal-Mart. Good luck
