Guest Talgor Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 My first greetings to all those about in these forums...In any case, I have quite a lot of problems installing the free version of BC3000AD. The problem mainly is that the installation desperately needs OPTIONS. It unpacks itself on C-drive, it wants to install half of itself on C-drive no matter how much you want it to put itself on some other drive, etc. For somebody who has a C-partition of only 450 megs, meant ONLY for holding the window$ system, this is quite frankly more than a little irritating. Does anybody here know how to pass options to the installer program telling it to forget about C and to put ALL its files on some other drive?
Epsilon 5 Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Sorry, but CAN'T YOU READ?This a a bc3k topic, and you put it in "BCM general discussions"???This topic should be in "BC legacy", which is written under:"Post ALL legacy BC3K v2.0x related topics in there. Post this anywhere else, and you'll get banned."
Guest Talgor Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Excuse me for being new here... Judging from that reply I'm not expecting much help from the correct group either... Oh, well...
Supreme Cmdr Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Why don't you just move the program to the other drive and then run it from there? It will then give you enough free space to install where ever you like. The Installshield installer does allow you to change the default installation folder. The default install folder is just that : the default. You can change it....but only if actually read the options displayed right there in front of you.See that CHANGE button next to the default installation folder? Guess what its for. And that attitude will get nothing but banned. Why the hell do you think we have specific forums and descriptions of each? If you can't read instructions and abide by the rules, get OFF my site!! I don't have time to be moving threads to the proper forums because people like you can't READ. Don't you think we have better things to do with our time? And its because you can't or won't read, that you don't realize that you can actually change the default install folder. And if something as SIMPLE as these two, ellude you, then GIVE UP on the game because you WON'T be able to play it!! Guest Talgor Posted July 30, 2001 Report Posted July 30, 2001 Since my new post to this group was deleted, I will continue on this one.. Point 1: To Supreme Commander: I did not, and do not want in the future to attract your attention. I have read a number of posts on these forums, and know you do not like people such as me. Please, for both our sakes, do not pay any attention to me, and allow those who can stand people like me to help me to become acquinted to your game. Point 2: I AM running the installer-EXE from my D-drive, yet it puts all the temporary files plus 150 megs of non-temporary files on drive C despite my desire for it to put them on D-drive. (yes, this includes the dialogue box I get asking for the directory in which the game should be installed. It always requests for 150 megs of space on the C-drive as well). I have not discovered a way to change the DEFAULT file folder for the InstallShield program. The program itself does not seem to accept any switches I pass on to it, not even those that are supposed to work according to some web pages, and offers me NO options whatsoever for what directory it will uncompress itself to. Now, I am a Linux guy, and not very familiar with micro$oft's perversions, so there may be some options I am missing, but my search through directories, help files, and even the registry have uncovered no way to change these. If there is anybody on these forums who has the patience and interest to help me in this problem, I am grateful. Everybody else I hope to ignore my posts, and concentrate on their normal business. Point 3: I am not experienced with the BC3000AD forums. My experiences of similiar forums are from the TTLG forums, where people are friendly and tolerant. I am NOT very familiar with people whose intolerance is on this scale. I will try to adapt, but it will take time, please bear with me. I'm not intentionally trying to get banned, I'm just new. Guest Talgor Posted July 31, 2001 Report Posted July 31, 2001 Still you speak, despite my wishes, and the fact that it annoys you... On the other hand, nobody else seems inclined to speak, so perhaps better that I don't speak to myself...I was not thinking really "People who do not read instructions" are the kind of people you dislike, it was more on the lines of "People who do not know EVERYTHING I know", but since this also involves people who have not read every obscure manual for DOS and window$ programs, perhaps we can consider it the same...Now, as far as the TEMP variable goes, that was about the first thing I tried. In the Olden Days, DOS would understand things like "set TEMP=d:temp", and this I tried when trying to move the temp files... It had no effect. Now, in your divine wisdom, I am sure you can tell me how ignorant I am of EVERYTHING on the planet, and perhaps even in the process share a bit of information about the correct procedure for changing this TEMP variable...The change dialog I'm not going to reply to just yet, since getting to it requires quite a lot of moving window$ components to D-drive to clear enough space for the temp files... We'll handle that if those files are ever moved...And as for me being a Linux-user.... that is also something on your vast list of the kind of people you dislike inherently...?Thine, annoyingly, Talgor
Guest Talgor Posted July 31, 2001 Report Posted July 31, 2001 (comments at the end of the post, start with the problem this time)Yes, I did add set temp=d:temp to my autoexec.bat, and yes, there is such a directory on my HD. It has NO effect on where the installer puts its temporary files. The installer-exe itself is not on the C-drive. But even if this would succeed, I still would have those over 100 megs of files on my C-drive the install program wants to put there, in addition to the files it puts on the D-drive, where I wish the game to be installed. I was earlier assuming these files are permanent, are they?As for my non-knowledge of window$... Well, as mentioned earlier, I am not thoroughly acquinted with it, but I would not call my knowledge zero either. I haven't just started using it yesterday. I merely do not like it, because of just this kind of thing: it does not do what I tell it to do. Micro$oft calls this "user-friendly" I believe. But that is between m$ and me, not you.In any case, it appears that there is no help here, I will look elsewhere for it... I will just say that if you read your posts in this topic, hopefully you will see the same as I did: you become softer with time. *grin* Your first reply was practically a flame-bait (you only barely avoided the line of calling me names, quite possibly in order to be able to say you never did later on), but your latest didn't contain more than one insinuated insult! You clearly need time to warm up to people.. I'll look for one more reply to this, and then I'll be out of your hair... I'll only recommend that you print that readme link on top of the forums a little bigger, so people who are accustomed to vastly different kinds of forums won't do the same mistake as I did. This will lower your own annoyance as well as theirs.Thine, Talgor
