Hello everyone. Another n00b reporting for duty. I've got a few questions about dogfighting that i wanted to ask the vets. I'm actually much more comfortable as a fighter pilot then I am as a commander, even though I like both careers. I tried the search on the forum and I haven't found anything relevant so I'm assuming this topic hasn't been covered yet.

I just wanted tips on how to take out other fighters/shuttles. I can take out the bigger crusiers and carriers easily, but taking on other figthers is a pain since I have a very hard time trying to get a lead on them. I do as the manual says: cut the power on the guns so the firing rate increases, hit the match speed button, lock on with missiles, etc. Is it just a matter of patience, or is there any other tips and tricks to make taking them out easier?

You didn't try very hard! If you search on "dogfighting", all forums, any date, you will get back 12 hits. The second one, "Need help with fighters" is a good thread. I hope you aren't trying to dogfight fighters with your CC, cuz that would be an exercise in futility.

Yeah, I noticed it just after I posted my own topic.

I think Spindoktor meant as in trying to use the CC like a fighter which isn't really a good idea.

If you watch the action of the crawdad, or crayfish, you will find that he is constantly swimming backwards quickly. This is because his claws are forward as well as his eyes. He can back up and defend himself at the same time.

Since our CC all have awesome retrothrusters I use them to back up. I usually go forward quickly until my target is in range. He will try to get behind me, but I will begin retro-thrusting, keeping him in my sights. You'd be amazed at how well you can keep a fast fighter in front of you simply by alternating between afterburner and retrothrusting. (all while changing direction to line up, of course)

This tactic will NOT work planetside very well, since you can easily back up into the ground. This usually leads to augering in and being perfectly screwed.....

the crawdad??? interesting... usually i dont fly a fighter, ill just wade in with my pta's meting out laser death.

when i am in a fighter tho, ill just put on EMD, and do the match speed TMD thing... that always works for me. if its a high ai opponent though, ill try the "rear admiral", and that usually works.
