Yes even us vets tend to ask newbie questions

Can anyone tell me how to set up a Mine Defense Grid so that I can leave my CC somewhere or so that I can mine a jumpgate?

I usually just pop through the jump gate, go to VOTL, drop a leech and thust up. I repeat this in the general area making sure that my speed is zero when I drop the mine. After putting down about 4 or so leeches I'll drop a couple of crabs for covering fire. Usually I'll keep the crabs close to my ship.

Takes awhile but it's kinda fun to do.

I just use the mines to distract the enemy, when being attacked by multiple cruisers or carriers, They seem to be more interested in the mines, and I become secondary. This buys me time. I have seen the crabs do a little firing, but have never SEEN the leach do anything effective.

If you can think in 3D, and extrapolate your position, then try this:

Upon entering a system, arm AT LEAST 20 leech mines into minebays, set forward movement to 0, deploy a cargopod of worthless junk for reference, move 10km forward and set a mine.

Yaw 20%, move slightly and set a mine. Continue until you have a complete circle on that relative plane. Return to center (PAD 5, bearing on the cargopod ).

Roll 20% and repeat. Return to center ( PAD 5 ) and roll 60% ( estimated), repeat.

If you have done this correctly, you should be able to zoom into TacOps and see your CC in a circle of active mines. (I think that mines are only active for 15 minutes or so)

Set launch control off, marines on search, and go about your business.

(I learned to do this in BC3K 2.07)

If you deploy them right, several leech mines, in conjunction, can destroy a Stormcarrier. Crabs are good for fighters and for confusing STS.

I did some of that type of positioning, while experimenting, after a certain battle and I was trying to stay alive.

Using all the mines, up that fast, was a little exasperating, but they saved my butt...for awhile.

The chips were down and there was little else I could do; no iridium, engines damaged, along with almost everything else. The second wave hit me after the mines expired. OUCH!! I dont want to think about it. The memory still hurts.(They were, such a good crew)

Damn I feel old.

One more thing, if you are planning on setting up a minefield peremeter and walking away from the game, then DO NOT leave your CC on AP/AI HALT orders!! If you do, and an enemy warps in and targets you, your CC will go BOOM!!

Instead, set AP/AI to S.A.D., or STRIKE, and your crew should be able to react to threats if your crew's AI is high enough.

You probably won't be in the same location when you return, but at least you won't have to restart.
