OK, then, how many of you were aware Universal Studios is bringing Battlestar Galactica back under the direction of Bryan Singer and Tom DeSanto, the two guys responsible for the X-men movie? Sounds great doesn't it. But what if I told you they had no plans to use Richard Hatch - Apollo from the old show. And that if they do use any of the other characters they will probably not be brought back in any meaningful way. Why am I bugging you guys about this? Because the next two weeks are a very critical time in this process, and the fans need to make their voices heard NOW! The current plan is to forget that miserable flop even occurred. Won't that make it a little tough?Then again it didn't stop them making half of Gladiator without Olly Reed (RIP).From my memory, the original show was shite, partly because of the awful acting. So not to use any of the original cast is a BIG step in the right direction. IMHO.

There's always that infinitesimal chance that Hollywood won't screw it up. These remakes always seem to make one fatal, but deliberate mistake... toning down the seriousness by adding goofiness. Remember Lost in Space? Almost, but not quite. What was with that friggin monkey-thing?!?!? Why did they have to destroy the cool robot to make a lame one!?!?If your going to reinvent the wheel, at least keep it round.
Guest ParkerM Posted September 4, 2001 Report Posted September 4, 2001 Well, all the 70's TV silliness aside, the concept is a relatively good one offering plenty of story lines for a properly motivated writing staff. Unfortunately the odds are good that it'll be crippled by a less than adequate staff. Richard Hatch (Apollo) decided a few years back that there was enough of a fan base (I was surprised to find this out too) to maybe possibly to get a studio to bite. He's even supposed to have lined up about 60 mil in backing. The fly in the ointment is that the franchise is owned by MGM, IIRC, and they for some reason are backing the original producer from what it sounds like. I suspect somebody called in some chips in order to freeze Hatch out but we'll never know. From the original producers past work and current utterances on the subject I feel that the franchises best bet lies with Hatch but thats just my opinion.

Legal problems ensued, copyright owner flat out denied "apollo" permission to make the movie.

I mean they're all humans right?(from different planets). How can the gravitational difference with earth makes these guys jump higher. Wait I forgot....It was done in the 80's (which coincidently is making a comeback)

Now I think about it I only liked two characters in the whole series: Adama & Starbuch (sp?). I don't think it's a good idea to bring the original crew back. I'd rather see a sequel with a new cast taking place some time after the original series.I hope they don't screw it up.

Not saying that your wrong but my reading of the situation was that the creator of the series is not an issue. Rather the issue is getting permission form MGM to use the franchise. Yes, Hatch jumped the gun and P.O'd Spelling but Spelling does not own the franchise, creator or not. MGM does. At least thats my take on the whole screwed up situtaion.

They were interviewing the creator and he was flat out refusing to give his creation to someone else, especially after they had marketed the new film (in Canada I think) without his knowledge.MGM holding the rights may be part of that, dunno.
